Yeah, I’m out for a bit.

Exmo Reddit wouldn’t tolerate this kinda stuff. It has its own problems granted but stuff like this gets moderated pretty quickly.

I gave y’all (and myself) space over conference but I think I’m gonna take some more again.

Perturbed.

There is either one or two mods that are currently active.  Sometimes they go for extended times not being available. This appears to be one of those times. You shouldn’t assume this is tolerated simply because this alias hasn’t been banned yet. Rather Ahab has demonstrated he has no regard for the rules of the forum and he lies to sign up again, using the justification that he only posts under one name at a time to deceive himself that he isn’t lying about using additional profiles to get around bannings.

There is a good chance he is using other methods to disguise his IP address so the mods can’t just block his IP as well.

If anyone knows of a way to permanently ban someone, offering it to the mods would likely be appreciated.

He is the board’s equivalent to “sovereign citizen”, he interprets the rules to justify his choices and to use the board and its community as he wills rather than to see how best he can work in the community.

I sincerely wonder if he's not delusional, or dealing with some other mental health issue.  I just can't fathom that a rational mentally healthy person would be behaving the way that he is or posting what he posts.

I suspect he is ‘on the spectrum’ based on phrasing but I am not an expert.

Then you’re intentionally not connecting the dots. Assimilation is an age old problem within the church.

I doubt you even read it.

I did read it actually. Person endures feeling ‘less than’ due to skin color and later realizes their child is enduring the same and leaves. I don’t blame them.

I am just saying it doesn’t make sense as a response to my (admittedly hackneyed) joke.

It is futile, bOObOO will just become Baba...  I think we are up past 13 accounts now.  The resistance is strong in this one.  Blocking his account is equivalent to a woman saying "no" to him.  "No" is too unclear without a physical fight.

Are there that many new users signing up every day? It seems like his new log ins would stand out in some way.

I have reported him to the mods for his, imo, dangerous comments.

Please don’t compare people on the spectrum to that idiot.

It is not a comparison. I suspected this about him long before he did anything bad. It explains his pedantic posting style.

It is not a intended as a general slur against anyone who is autistic. As I (and many others) say about our own mental and emotional health challenges: “It is an explanation but it is not an excuse.”

Boardnannying here…

I don’t think it is appropriate to publicly diagnose anyone for any emotional, physical, or mental behaviour who is not asking for such, even if one speculates in private.

As a self-diagnosed psychopath I disagree.

Argue with mods about it. ;)

I’m just thinking about my beautiful, autistic granddaughter and wouldn’t want her compared to him. If he is autistic then I apologize for calling him an idiot, but I think he may just be a jerk.

The diagnosis of jerk is basically compatible with any other diagnosis of any kind. You can also have any other condition and not be a jerk.

With one exception. If you are a mime you are always also a jerk.

Just as a side note there is really not a good way to IP ban people anymore. I can change my IP by turning off my WiFi and connecting with my phone. There was a brief period where some sites would ban a range of IP addresses from an Internet Service Provider to get rid of a poster if the ISP used a predefined IP range but that doesn’t work that well either. If you want to hide your IP address you can.

You can also sneak in a cookie to ban someone but that can be circumvented. The general approach on a lot of forums is to either use some kind of whitelist process where you restrict new posters to some limited activities (already on this board) or, if being on the website is engaging enough to allow it, charge a nominal fee to join so you lose money each time you are banned, or screen new users to people you or others on the board know via login or something like that.

There is a reason the rash of new social media sites that show up dedicated to some specific ideology are almost always torn apart by their opponents. In one recent case it was trashed before the website even launched. That reason is that security is HARD!

I learned something about this with my blog. My internet provider had dynamic IP for us instead of static so I was constantly having problems with not being on approved lists when someone who had previously used the IP to send spam mail that I was currently using.

Correct. It's pretty much impossible to perma-ban people online anymore.

But the real problem is that it's even harder to get people, collectively, to not feed the trolls.

Whenever I see one of this poster's comments, do you know what I do? I just keep scrolling and ignore it - completely.

Even when he responds directly to something I said and (invariably) says something that it just begging to be rebutted. Even then, I just keep scrolling.

Honestly, I hope the mods don't ban him, because it's easier to ignore a known quantity. The most irritating part of the cycle is when I have to go back to figuring out who he is again.

The only reason why I might choose to respond to him is when he has gone on long enough that lurkers unfamiliar with the board and its method of moderation (intermittent) might assume such comments are tolerated or worse agreed with.

It might be a good idea next go round if he simply gets ignored but aggressively downvoted.  It Sends a message but doesn’t engage.

This pretty well covers it.

I ran a Minecraft server and got to spend some years fending off 12yo hackers. They were international 12yo hackers so +1. I setup scrapers to harvest IPs from proxy sites into blocklists. I think they're still scraping.

Other IP addresses to block are VPNs but acquiring those IPs takes resources.  However, updated lists of TOR IPs are everywhere. For diligence sake I'll mention IPv6 but it seems unsupported by the board so N/A here.

Past IP blocking is browser fingerprinting and setting persistent cookies (mentioned earlier) but those measures are trivially circumvented.

I agree with the consensus that folks who want in are going to get in. The best countermeasure is awareness by board members.

This is a good point.  Maybe if enough people would simply respond with a cut and paste type warning it would prevent others from feeding him.

The challenge is identifying him correctly. When I first joined, overeager Ahab spotters pegged me for him, based on my (then) username of NoahVail. After the 3rd round of questioning, I ditched that name.

BTW, I read thru the thread and enjoyed the 70s slasher movie vibe (innocent family of cheerleaders plays volleyball in a sunny meadow. suddenly, on page 5, a twig snaps...).

They wouldn’t tolerate Ahab?  We haven’t either but he appears to be like black mold. Very hard to get rid of.

How does Reddit keep people from making sock puppets after they are banned?  Especially since so many people have made it so you can’t ban their IP addresses anymore either.

Maybe we can take a play from their book.

I’ll ask. I imagine they just pop the gopher on the head each time they intervene & break rules.

I mean, I was once banned for a day or so for a Tapir joke. Surely Ahab’s comments qualify for some time out.

Sometimes he gets banned multiple times a day and probably permanently each time now as he has taken to sock puppets…he may appear to be tolerated solely because moderation frequency varies on the board and people familiar with him have generally put him on “ignore”.  His comments may not get reported until something is quoted and then gets the attention of those who are willing to report others (a number of posters refuse to report to mods on principle).  Sometimes moderation can occur almost immediately upon reporting, sometimes it may take a number of days after a report has been made, rarely are reports ignored in my experience.  But Mods don’t always announce banning, so they often happen without being noticed, especially with posters who are more intermittent in their posting.

That’s a very good question, as he has displayed this behavior and mindset under every sock puppet he uses. I wonder if there is a way to prevent him from continuing to make new sock puppets.  As soon as one is banned, he starts using a new one.

Maybe I've missed something, but in reading his comments, all I've seen is him expressing views that may be unpopular, which DO serve to spur discussion and greater understanding.  I've seen worse disrespect by a frequent poster here I won't mention by name.  What is it with this new thing about trying to cancel free speech that doesn't match the prevailing, more enlightened view?  It makes me sick.
