smac97 Posted September 4, 2019 Posted September 4, 2019 Here: Quote When someone visits their local church, it’s common to see Jesus’s image printed onto programs and holy books. However, it seems when one church in Minnesota was putting together their own program for this past Sunday’s processional, they included the image of a famous Star Wars character instead of the Son of Christ. "Son of Christ?" Ah, well. Everyone makes mistakes. Quote Members of the congregation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Minnesota quickly realized the mistake shortly after looking at the program as the image was printed right on the front of its cover. The design featured a collection of images of Jesus Christ arranged together. However, one image included in the collection was not of Jesus Chris at all but instead of the famous Star Wars Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi (portrayed by Ewan McGregor in the “Star Wars” prequels.) I thought this was just a humorous oversight. But possibly not: Quote If you’ve never seen the “Star Wars” films before, it’s easy to see why one might mistake the intergalactic character for the Son of God. However, according to Instagram user itsalwright101, it seems what members of the church thought was a mistake was actually done on purpose. “I have seen a lot out there where people think this is fake or was an accident from googling Jesus pics not knowing it was Obi-Wan. I was fully aware of what I was doing,” wrote Instagram user itsalwright101, who claimed to be the one responsible for designing the program. I wonder if the bishop of the Prior Lake Ward is going to get a phone call about this. If "itsalwright101" really did do this, and if he did it on purpose, then bragging about it on Instagram is not the best way to keep it on the DL. A bit more: Quote This isn’t the first time Obi-Wan was used in place of Jesus. Just last year a Utah man pranked his parents by giving them a portrait of the beloved Jedi in the same pose for Christmas. In an interview about the prank, the man revealed that his parents were active members of the church but didn’t know much about Star Wars. He said he had grown up with an image of Jesus that looked similar to the Obi-Wan portrait and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to prank his parents. Not too impressed by this. Pranks are generally harmless, but this one seems to go a bit beyond the realms of good taste. Thanks, -Smac 4

Popular Post sheilauk Posted September 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted September 4, 2019 (edited) The pranking of his parents seems harmless, it's clear who did it and why and the parents can easily replace the picture. The church programme stunt is different. 1st, no one knows if it's a mistake or on purpose. 2nd, it's not possible to replace the picture before use - it's either throw the whole thing and do without or use it. 3rd, its led to the stupid question at the end of the article and makes the Church a laughing stock and 4th, playing a joke about Christ in a sacred meeting seems sacrilegious! Its a question of time and place. Not all types of fun and laughter are appropriate in all places. Edited September 4, 2019 by sheilauk 5

Popular Post Ahab Posted September 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted September 4, 2019 Just FYI, the other pictures aren't really pictures of Jesus Christ, either. And they are sometimes modeled after a real person, which means there are real people who also look like those people in those pictures, even if they don't look like Ewan McGregor. One of my brothers in law, for example, posed as the model for Jesus Christ in a famous painting, and every time my wife and I look at it we are reminded of her brother as well as of Jesus Christ. Ewan McGregor is a nice looking man, at least. I don't think Jesus feels offended by him, or by my brother in law either. 9

The reverence of the meeting should be coupled with the message from President Hinckley which was quoted on the bulletin. We all should try to enjoy life more, not just try to endure the challenging moments. 2
Popular Post bluebell Posted September 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted September 4, 2019 I think the program maker is either pretending they did it on purpose in an attempt to look less foolish (which isn't working) or they struggle to know the difference between appropriate and inappropriate things. 5

I love the tune of that song, but it is soooo condescending. Did Mary know less than this soapy song writer? Um, doubt it. 2

Not something she likely forget even if she didn't get all the implications. And then there is the whole being pregnant though a virgin....that should have been a pretty big clue something different was going on. Quote 30 Then the Angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast [f]found favor with God. 31 For lo thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bear a son, and shalt call his Name Jesus. 32 He shall be great, and shall be [g]called the Son of the most High, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David. 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom shall be none end. 34 Then said Mary unto the Angel, [h]How shall this be, seeing I know not man? 35 And the Angel answered, and said unto her, The holy Ghost [j]shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee: therefore also that [k]Holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be [l]called the Son of God. 36 And behold, thy [m]cousin, Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is her [n]sixth month, which was called barren. 37 For with God shall nothing be impossible. 38 Then Mary said, Behold the servant of the Lord: be it unto me according to thy word. So the Angel departed from her. 2

I view the questions posed therein as rhetorical. So what if she understood the prophecies (and I believe she did)? Often, we today need to be reminded of the implications of scriptural passages, even those that are well known to us. Didn’t Mary need to be reminded, when she found the 12-year-old Christ in the temple, about the urgency for Him to be about His Father’s business? And I agree it’s a lovely song, lyrics and music both. My first year as ward choir director, I adapted the sheet music into an arrangement for our choir to sing.
