Do you believe that Satan is our brother?

I've always believed in the family aspect of heaven. I believe all spirits are children of a Heavenly Father and Heavenly Mother. That makes us all spiritual siblings, including Lucifer. Does it feel weird having Lucifer as a brother and how do you feel about that?

He is our ex-brother. He is a fallen morning star according to scripture. The Latin name Lucifer reflects that. Since then He became our enemy rather than our spiritual brother. Whether this will ever change is doubtful. I believe he has been Satan for many worlds. Nevertheless the Lord allows him to exist, and I presume hopes that he will change. Even so, the nature of things is that another would take his place in the same lust for power.

Satan and a third of the host of heaven (our brothers and sisters) are enemies of God their Father.  It should cause us great sorrow to know our siblings are filled with rage against us and our Father, and that they will spend eternity in Outer Darkness.  However, it was their free choice, even if misguided.

No, I don't believe in an entity like that. I know that goes against Christianity. But I have a problem with people blaming it on the devil for their actions. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I just haven't had something bad enough happen to me involving Satan and I shouldn't be so sure.

The devil made me do it?  Ha.  I've never met anyone who did that.

You might be enticed, but the choices are all yours.  And pretty much nobody faces Satan in person.  It's his influence we mostly face.  And some of us fall to that influence.

And of course that is the first principle that Satan teaches: I am not the devil, because there is none.

We may be brothers in spirit, but due to the Redemption of Christ we are not brothers in Spirit. When we choose the latter, and are perfected in Christ, the former is no longer relevant or an option.

Doesn't feel any weirder than evil dictators being my brother.

If you continue to follow that line of reasoning, then the opposite must also be true - there must not be a God either, for the same reasons.

The existence of a devil doesn't remove accountability from us any more than the existence of a God would.  We are responsible for our own choices, whether they be influenced by God,  the devil, your mother, your brother, your dog, your aunt, etc.  Or, do they also not exist?

As you know I'm dealing with a lot of decisions in my beliefs. I just dislike how some people can't even live their lives without worrying if Satan is trying to sway them. Sometimes we give too much credit to this entity. And I don't like people like my sister who is TBM telling me that he is influencing me. :( But enough about me. If I believe Satan is my brother, then why haven't we prayed for the guy to change his ways? Is there any hope for Satan and his minions I wonder?

Not all weird, we all know siblings, aunts, uncles and friends, and strangers on earth who make horribly evil choices.   That may make us cringe and decline to be around them, but we still accept that they are related because we are all children of Heavenly Parents.

We're being influenced in multitudinous ways, every day.  In TV, print, on the Internet -- this board is a good example of the latter.  We're being swayed every day.  Some are calling you to abandon your old faith because it is false; and some are saying it isn't false at all, but true, and if you do what you've been taught you'll be far better off than if you don't.  There are all kinds of arguments going one way or another.  Is it the devil behind the temptations to abandon God, or is it the TV?  Or certain of the posters here?  Or are they all in league together? Mainly unknowingly.

I look at it like this: this life is being led by you so that you can be proven to see which way you will go, if given free reign to make your own choices.  God happens to be a righteous being who cannot tempt you with two alternatives, one being good and the other evil.  He can only tempt you or rather, influence you to do good.  But a true choice requires alternatives.  For this reason there needs to be a countervailing force, attempting to sway you away from God.

And just because you don't like it that your sister is telling you that Satan is influencing you, can you be sure that this isn't exactly what is happening?  I'm sure that Satan is very slick about it, so very few people recognize the influence for what it is.  Just as when Madison Avenue puts out those advertising campaigns, suddenly people are buying products they perhaps didn't need, and they don't even realize how they're being led.

Do you also believe Eve was misguided for using her free choice to listen to Satan and disobey God in
the Garden of Eden?

Thanks,

It's a valid point, but I think that it's misguided to say that because some people misuse something (marriage, parenthood, the devil, whatever) that that means it's not a true or a good concept.   Either the devil is real or he isn't.  Whether or not people blame stuff on him that isn't his fault doesn't alter his reality at all.  :)

Why would it feel weird?  Some family goes bad.  Does not reflect on the parents or other members of the family.  Nephi had some bad brothers.  I still like Nephi.

Not at all, Jim.  "Eve," like all females who take their endowments in the temple of God, performs a ritual act according to a set liturgy -- an ordinance which has cosmic significance for each  female who performs it.  All those females are "Eve," which means "the mother of all living."  The Garden is the temple of God.

2 Nephi 28:  19 For the kingdom of the devil must shake, and they which belong to it must needs be stirred up unto repentance, or the devil will grasp them with his everlasting chains, and they be stirred up to anger, and perish;
20 For behold, at that day shall he rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good.
21 And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say: All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well—and thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell.
22 And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them: I am no devil, for there is none—and thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance.
23 Yea, they are grasped with death, and hell; and death, and hell, and the devil, and all that have been seized therewith must stand before the throne of God, and be judged according to their works, from whence they must go into the place prepared for them, even a lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment.
24 Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion!
25 Wo be unto him that crieth: All is well!
