It seems as part of the churches rebranding they have decided that Moroni is no longer the one they one they want to promote as the symbol of the church. New temples are being built without his iconic presence

I wonder why?

It was all hush-hush but Moroni was actually excommunicated. About 1 year ago, he started spreading  fallacious  claims that the plates he buried were just fabricated stories by Mormon, and that he regrets writing the sections he did.

Dair Finkum,

I would comment on the spelling/typography of your thread title, but certain [humorless trolls] ... Err, sorry, I mean, certain people ... have downvoted me for that on another thread, so ... Shhh! ... this one will be our little secret!  I promise, I won't tell anyone! ;)

Yawn.

Few things could be more somnorific than dredging up a year-old story to stir up interest in a topic that was not all that amazing to begin with.

On a more serious note, I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a deliberate attempt to remove angel Moroni because it, like the name Mormon, distracts from the true message of Christ. I think having it on a few temple is a great symbolic gesture , and I imagine that was the original intent, but it has become more than that. It is not longer symbolic of an aspect of our faith, it is now a symbol… which as I mentioned, may not be the symbol we may want

I wouldn’t mind to seeing fewer Moroni statues and more Cristus statues.

So, I just checked, and there are six spires on the Salt Lake Temple. So put the fiddler up there, and then add on the other spires angels playing guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, and dobro, and you’ve got me as a convert.

Do we call them The Moroni Spires String Band? The Brigham Boys? The Restored Pickers?

Brigham Young - I will say, however, that it will have six towers, to begin with, instead of one. Now do not any of you apostatize because it will have six towers, and Joseph only built one. It is easier for us to build sixteen, than it was for him to build one. The time will come when there will be one in the centre of Temples we shall build, and on the top, groves and fish ponds. But we shall not see them here, at present.

It’s not a new thing and has been going on for the past couple years. I can’t remember the last temple rendition released with a Moroni. There are only a couple temples current under construction that have a Moroni. I had presumed this was part of President Nelson’s push on an emphasis away from non-central messages. There are cultural things (not exclusive to LDS culture) where certain things or symbols are employed to convey certain meanings, but the oft repetition of them creates a bit of a ‘rote phrases and vain repetitions’ phenomenon. Moroni certainly symbolizes a number of things, as do many other temple symbols, but there’s nothing inherently eternal about the necessity of the symbol. The idea of Moroni being placed on the temple not only didn’t come from any kind of revelation, but didn’t even come from a member.

That said, we have a lot of things that are good but perhaps not necessary, and I had supposed this was to break apart a bit of that association. However, the rate at which this went from nearly all temples to nearly no temples seems somewhat distracting and a bit reactionary, giving rise to the same challenges but the opposite end of the spectrum.

tl;dr I’m completely open for a de-emphasis on certain non-essential imagery, but I believe there’s a bit of over-emphasis on our de-emphasis that a lot of the underlying meaning and purpose of the de-emphasis is getting missed, and replaced with a different kind of over-emphasis.

Even then Moroni wasn't placed on all temples. (Eg mesa)

And Cardston and Hawaii . Maybe , like bell bottom pants , the older style is returning.

Fiddling on a roof sounds incredibly unsafe. What kind of madman would do that?

Moroni on temples, much like the idea that temples need to face east, has nothing to do with doctrine.

Not entirely true.  There's doctrine behind both.

But it's true there's no doctrinal requirement.

Same with Catholic churches. Facing East has doctrine behind it, but is not required.

Indeed. I like the names. Now that I am in Kentucky I can start finding models for the sculptures. How about “Moroni and the City Creek  Brethren”?

So what we have here is a misleading, if not altogether inaccurate, thread title apparently intended as click bait.

The Moroni statue has not disappeared from any temple, new or old. If anything, the opposite has occurred, with statues being placed on some temples that didn’t have them originally.
