Duncan Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 I noticed the Cardston, Laie, Logan, Mesa and Manti Temples don't have the Moroni statue on them and was wondering why that was? there may be other Temples but I don't know which ones
Libs Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 I don't really know, but I would guess it might have something to do with the height requirement of the area they are in. I remember, when they built the Newport Beach Temple, they had to lower the Moroni several feet down, to comply with the local standard. There was a big hubbub about it, as I recall, and the neighbors took it to City Counsel.
iknowthechurchistrue Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 the reason is because god doesnt want moroni on some temples. its all done through revelation.
orion88 Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 Could be a money issue. I heard that newer (smaller?) temples will have 6 oxen instead of12 to support the baptismal font. Mirrors will be used to give it the illusion of 12. They mightalso use cheaper wood instead of brass.Check with the Church Building Department however.
Stargazer Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 the reason is because god doesnt want moroni on some temples. its all done through revelation.I suppose that's a personal revelation to you. Too bad God didn't see fit to confide this information to the Church leadership.https://www.lds.org/ensign/1994/07/i-have-a-question/i-have-a-question?lang=eng&query=angel+moroni+statueHow long have statues of the angel Moroni appeared atop Latter-day Saint temples? Is there a reason the statues don’t appear on top of all temples?Answered by Val D. Greenwood, director of special services and temple facilities, Church Temple Department. Many members of the Church have become accustomed to seeing a golden statue depicting the angel Moroni on the tallest spires of latter-day temples. The gilded statues are so commonplace today that many people may not know that most temples built before 1980 had no statues of Moroni. The first Latter-day Saint temple with a statue of an angel atop its spire was the Nauvoo Temple. That figure, unlike those we are familiar with today, was a smaller weather vane in the shape of a flying angel in a horizontal position. The angel, which was not then identified as the angel Moroni, was intended to represent the angel described in the book of Revelation as flying “in the midst of heaven” (Rev. 14:6).The Salt Lake Temple, dedicated in 1893, was the second temple to be adorned with a statue of an angel. The earliest architectural sketches of the temple show that a statue representing a flying angel was considered. Before the angel was sculpted, however, Church authorities accepted the suggestion of a young sculptor, Cyrus E. Dallin, who was engaged for the project to sculpt the angel in an upright position. That statue—twelve feet, five and a half inches tall—also depicted the angel described in Revelation 14 and was formally identified as the angel Moroni (see Improvement Era, April 1968, p. 6).The third temple to have a statue of the angel Moroni on its spire was the Los Angeles Temple, dedicated in 1956. The Washington Temple, dedicated in 1974, was fourth with a statue, followed by the Seattle Temple in 1980.Nearly every temple dedicated since 1980 has been graced by a statue of the angel Moroni. A statue of the angel Moroni was added to the Idaho Falls Temple in the early 1980s, approximately forty years after its dedication. Only fifteen of the Church’s forty-five currently completed temples do not have a statue of the angel Moroni.Yet the Church has no policy regarding the use of statues of the angel Moroni atop temples. The general practice is to use the statue, but there are reasons it may be absent. In certain geographic locations, building codes or use permits restrict use of the statue. The Sydney Australia Temple, for example, originally had no statue because of building restrictions. The statue was added later after permission to do so was granted. In some areas, a statue may give more ornamentation than desired. In other areas, the statue is absent because a wrong impression may arise from its presence (such as in areas where statues on church buildings are understood to represent objects of worship). Limits imposed by the architectural design of some temples may be another reason; such is the case with the temple to be completed in Vernal, Utah, by converting the old Uintah Stake Tabernacle. As the heavenly messenger who revealed to the Prophet Joseph Smith the location of the golden plates of the Book of Mormon, Moroni has become a symbol of the Restoration and of the gospel being preached “unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people” (Rev. 14:6).In other words, the Angel Moroni appears on top of a temple where it is appropriate. I'm sure some inspiration is involved, but it would appear that God does not usually specify architectural details. 1

lizrenowden Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 The London Temple didn't have the Angel Moroni until 2008. However, it is on the flight path to Gatwick Airport whether that had anything to do with it I have no idea.

He just sounds waaaay too positive, so I understand your suspicion, which I did share for a few moments.HOWEVER, now suddenly none of his posts exist. I was trying to see where iknowthechurchistrue was coming from -- I thought there would be maybe a post in Social Hall to introduce himself, but nope. And then when I try to see all his posts (when I checked, he had six according to his profile) there are none! Maybe we scared him off? Did he evaporate into thin air? In my experience you can't delete even your own posts, so did a Mod delete his posts? And if so, why? It is very mysterious. Edited January 28, 2012 by Stargazer

When I was on my mission I was in this one area and every once in a while we kept running into this older guy and who asked us if we knew a "Bishop Greenwood" and we were like uh..can't say that we do...and he would always give us twenty american dollars each so we just chalked it up to one of the 3 nephites! 1

We tracting in Muehleim-Ruhr in Germany (1973), and as we crossed a street to get to the other side (ha) a guy who had just blown us off was driving his car past us, stopped and held a 20 Deutschmark note out to us. We hesitated and tried to tell him we weren't accepting contributions, but he impatiently and loudly overrode us, "Nehmen Sie! Nehmen Sie! Nehmen Sie!" ["Take it! Take it! Take it!] We took it and watched in bemusement as he drove off, apparently late to an appointment (which is what he originally told us at the door anyway).I think he was the Fourth Nephite. 2
Peppermint Patty Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Duncan and Stargazer,Excellent experiences, +1 for both of you gentlemen. One of you guys should start an OP for people to share their 3 Nephite experiences, or near 3 Nephite experiences. I have a couple I would share.

Duncan Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 Does the Manhattan Temple have a Moroni on it?yes
bjw Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 The Oakland California Temple has no Moroni statue. It has five gold pyramids on it with an Oriental motif. I'm thinking one reason may be that it would look awkward to put a statue on top of a gold pyramid. I think the fact that it has five spires is also irregular.
cinepro Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I suspect the rumors about planes using a Temple as a navigation marker are based on the much more likely scenario where ships reportedly use the Oakland Temple as a navigation marker as they navigate the San Fransisco Bay.Here's a Moroni Statue trivia question: only a few Moroni Statues are holding gold plates. How many are there, and on which Temples are they standing?
altersteve Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 Is made of gold no?I think they're made of copper. I know the one on the Salt Lake Temple is, at least.
BlueDreams Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 I noticed the Cardston, Laie, Logan, Mesa and Manti Temples don't have the Moroni statue on them and was wondering why that was? there may be other Temples but I don't know which onesMy guess is that for a number of them, they just don't fit architecturally. For example, the mesa and Laie temple both have completely flat looking roofs. Having moroni on them would look weird. Similar problem with cardston, though it has a slightly pointed roof.
LeSellers Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 (edited) Is made of gold no?Moroni is typically made of fiber glass and gilded. The one on the Denver Temple was replaced a few years ago. When the Security Chief (a ward membe) invited the Young Men and Women to see the old (orignial, > 20 years) one, they were startled to note that he had been shot three or four times. The Oakland Temple lights, in accordance with Jimmy "the Useless" Carter's edict, were turned off in the 70s. Immediately, pilots landing at both SFO and OAK demanded that they be turned back on, confirming the prophecy made in the dedicatory prayer that the Temple would be a beacon to the nations.Lehi Edited January 30, 2012 by LeSellers 1
thesometimesaint Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 It's an architectual decisiion.cinepro:Not the statue, but the spires. When they are lit at night, ships at sea can see them for many miles.
Traela Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 The Idaho Falls temple didn't originally have Moroni. In that case, there were very stringent budget considerations when it was built, which may have factored into the decision. (I actually think the Moroni that was eventually added is a little too big, but that's just my opinion. )
