Giving is a specific location is a very temporal and mortal perspective. We will choose to damn ourselves. Hell for one is heaven for another. A loving god would never banish a child to 'hell'. Some simply will not want to enjoy the wonders of a celestial existence. The earth will be perfected and will become a source of knowledge, but to suppose the righteous live in houses on a planet the way we exist today and the wicked will live on some black planet galaxies away is small thinking. There is some punishment / suffering to be had for those that do not repent though. Is there a place for that or does that just happen?

As I look around and take in everything that probably went in to making a flower, tree, animals, rivers, the ocean, the atmosphere and etc, there's so much science involved, if we do progress after death much of our time is probably spent learning how to organize life. I just don't see God sticking his stubborn children on a planet until they learn their lesson. Must be a better solution.
Kenngo1969 Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 By the way, my first response when I read this question is, I dunno. Where the hell do you think it is?!

I have no idea where we'll be while our mind is in this condition, but I doubt hell is actually a physical place. I agree Mike, Hell is not a physical place (Except for Hell in the Cayman Islands). It is only found in what people have cluttered your mind to believe.

I have no idea where we'll be while our mind is in this condition, but I doubt hell is actually a physical place. Joseph Smith taught: "A man is his own tormenter and his own condemner. Hence the saying, They shall go into the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. The torment of disappointment in the mind of man is as exquisite as a lake burning with fire and brimstone. I say, so is the torment of man. ("Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, comp. Joseph Fielding Smith (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1976), pp. 310-11) King Benjamin explained: "Therefore if that man repenteth not, and remaineth and dieth an enemy to God, the demands of divine justice do awaken his immortal soul to a lively sense of his own guilt, which doth cause him to shrink from the presence of the Lord, and doth fill his breast with guilt, and pain, and anguish, which is like an unquenchable fire, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever." (Mosiah 2:38) 2
Tacenda Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 It may have been mentioned but my Mormon upbringing it was taught that we would watch a film of our life and how we lived it. And the hell would come when we relive or watch what we did wrong. Or could have done.

Where the hell do you think it is?! If I have my Mormon doctrine correct, isn't the only thing about us that's eternal is our intelligence? Our spirit was formed in heaven, our mortal body here on Earth, but our intelligence has existed eternally, just as heavenly fathers. So it makes sense to me that "hell" could be the state of our mind/intelligence. Maybe hell would be not having the veil lifted resulting in never receiving further knowledge. The punishment is execute by a divine law that even God lives by. Alma 42 talks about this law. It mentions in Verse 25 that should God go against this law, he would cease to be God. God did not make the law. Doctrine and Covenants 19:15-18 talks about Christ suffering for us… but it only applies if we repent.
pogi Posted June 17, 2021 Posted June 17, 2021 As to where hell is: Quote 44 Wherefore, he saves all except them—they shall go away into everlasting punishment, which is endless punishment, which is eternal punishment, to reign with the devil and his angels in eternity, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched, which is their torment— 45 And the end thereof, neither the place thereof, nor their torment, no man knows; 46 Neither was it revealed, neither is, neither will be revealed unto man, except to them who are made partakers thereof; Interesting side note is that on one hand, hell is described as "everlasting" and "eternal", but in verse 45 it kind of leaves the door open and hints at an end...

Yeah, that was a common metaphor for how judgement would work at one point and later some people started teaching the metaphor as truth. Sounds incredibly tedious to have to watch the whole thing again. Usually it includes a bit about erasing parts where you repent. It follows logically that the best way to avoid having to tediously watch your whole life again is to sin all the time but repent a lot so your tape ends up being blank and you can skip the whole process. 1
MustardSeed Posted June 18, 2021 Posted June 18, 2021 In my mind, he’ll is akin to the experience of moving through the TSA lines of most American airports. The eye rolls, the barking, the yelling, the insults from the agents - treating passengers like criminals for innocent errors, my goodness no wonder there is so much tension on the flights themselves. I’ve not been treated like an animal any time in my life but for TSA. I’m a grown woman and I don’t need it. The shame humiliation frustration panic guilt and worry (for missing a flight) I felt recently is I imagine what Hell will be like. 2

Is there a place for that or does that just happen? Bad parents punish, good parents give natural consequences and opportunities to improve, days without end. In some way, if we do not take advantage of the atonement in this life, there will be some sort of consequence before the resurrection. all we know is that the so-called wicked will go to the spirit world where they will be minister to by the so-called righteous. In the end, every knee shall bow and every tongue confess. In the end, we will go where we are happy. not everyone will be happy living the lifestyle of the celestial kingdom. What one sees as hell, another sees as heaven. I know I would be very unhappy if I had to become a surgeon or a professional mountain climber. that would be hell to me. If a surgeon or mountain climber were compelled to do my job, they would likewise perceive it to be hell. so those who will not live by gods law will have their options limited but since they are not willing to live the standards of the celestial kingdom (a lifestyle that is required to enjoy its glory) they would be perfectly happy to live without it. I'd suggest two books on the subject, Big Gods: How Religion Transformed Cooperation and Conflict, by Ara Norenzayan, and God is Watching You, by Dominic Johnson. One could also Google "Broad Supernatural Punishment" for a list of articles dealing with the subject. These books and articles are representative of the field of the cognitive science of religion, which takes a naturalistic approach to religion.
