And I, Fair Dinkum, saw that I must soon go down to my grave were I to remain here; wherefore, I said unto my friendimies on MD&D: Take these words. And I told you the things in my heart, and I honestly tried to seek understanding and answers to difficult questions.  And I make an end of my posting here upon this board, which posting has been small compared to @smac97 @Scott Lloyd @Robert F. Smith but especially when compared to @Calm; and to the reader I bid farewell, hoping that many of my brethren may read my words. Brethren*, adieu.

*and of course like any good Mormon man when I say Brethren, inferred in that term, women instinctively know we men mean Sisters too, right? We just can't say the actual words, but you all understand.

Actually, it bothers me more that he used the word inferred when he should have said implied.

I am shocked no one has mentioned the “Brethern” in the title…it is a common mistake for me (along with getting confused by “western” and other such words…they need to choose one or the other as using both kills me) but wondering now if intentional because it is correct in the post.  :)

If it's driving you that far down the wrong way, then by all means take your leave. We shouldn't want to be parties to your destruction! 

But if you do go, know that despite the disagreement your commentary has evoked in me from time to time, I believe you have done much good for me. 

I don't think you'll be able to resist returning at some point, though.

Archaic English. Both forms are used. Brethren or brethern. It's the same for the feminine: sistren or sistern. 

So, when one says "Brethren or sisters" one is being inconsistent. One should say "Brethren and sistren." Or "Brethern and sistern." Or change the order of appearance. Or just say "Brothers and sisters".

In my humble opinion, anyway.

Au revoir, FD. I wish you the very best. Though much of your posting style grates on me, I am inclined to believe that were I to know you personally (along with many other posters who annoy me to no end!), we would be friends. None of us on this board should forget that though there will always be tension, we are all quite fortunate to have the privilege of hashing out our issues as civilly as we do. And that is a credit to you as much as to anyone else. Best. : )

While technically incorrect I support the use of the plural as a gender neutral replacement for the endless use of “his or her” and other technically correct but more wordy examples of the same. Writing instructions in the third person means you are stuck with either using one or the other and putting a proviso saying it can mean either or sounding incredibly weird. I write a lot of instructions and while I try to use second person as much as possible sometimes third person is unavoidable.

Is FD’s gender indeterminate?

Incidentally, for the record, my gender is not indeterminate. Nor am I legion. My preferred pronouns are he, him, his and himself.
