sunstoned Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 The title of the NY Times article is: Mormons Chided for Airport Welcoming of Missionaries. Not only do members come across in this article as arrogant and clueless, the Times slipped up and didn't use the proper name of the church as specified in the style guide published by the church's Public Relations department. Satan hit a double with this one. The people who showed up Sunday at the Salt Lake City Airport and stood shoulder-to-shoulder, some hugging arriving loved ones, should have heeded warnings to keep their distance to help prevent the spread of the virus, said critics of the gathering including U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney, Utah's governor and lieutenant governor and the church itself. https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2020/03/23/us/ap-us-virus-outbreak-mormon-missionaries.html 1
JamesBYoung Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 Nonetheless, the members ignored the church's advice, the government's advice, and good common sense. 1

Popular Post juliann Posted March 26, 2020 Popular Post Posted March 26, 2020 How many times and ways can these people be shamed? Sheesh I am sick of the pile on. Yeah, it was a train wreck. I have even seen an evil (and also brain dead person) post they hope they all get COVID. 9
Popular Post Judd Posted March 26, 2020 Popular Post Posted March 26, 2020 Prince had started that one of the reasons he had changed his name to a symbol was that he could hear negative things about ‘Prince’ and it bothered him, but when people could no longer refer to him in any exact sense, or by a name he used to have, it no longer bothered him. Here we have a report that casts Mormons in a bad light, but since we’re not Mormons... 7

But do they ever give the full name of the Church in the article? President Nelson’s words are often taken out of context in mockery. He didn’t say that using the name Mormon is a win for Satan, but rather, using it (or any other name, for that matter) in place of the name of Christ as an appellation for His Church.

Doing it over and over generally leads to defensiveness and emotional rejection of the reproof rather than learning. God knows this which is why he warned about making an enemy if done incorrectly. The instruction quoted is not the full process: “Reproving betimes with sharpness, when moved upon by the Holy Ghost; and then showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him whom thou hast reproved, lest he esteem thee to be his enemy“. I highly doubt the Times will be showing a greater love afterwards as well even if they were perhaps moved by the Spirit. Edited March 27, 2020 by Calm 6

A bit ironic considering the gender identity rules where you can lose your job for not doing just that, eh? 13

As a somewhat recently retired practitioner, I can tell you that it is a mark of professionalism in journalism to refer to an entity by its preferred title at least once in an article, even if you use a colloquialism or nickname elsewhere in the piece. But you missed the central point of my post. I was addressing sunstone’s oblique mockery of President Nelson in using the “victory for Satan” trope. President Nelson has been widely and contemptuously quoted out of context in using that phrase, and I’m determined, whenever I see it happen, to give correction regarding his true meaning. I’ll say it again: The “victory for Satan” is not in using the name Mormon per se, but in using it (or any other name) in place of the name of the Savior in referring to His Church. That’s why it’s just as bad to use “LDS” if you don’t include the name of Christ. Edited March 27, 2020 by Scott Lloyd 2

So I did click on the link after all and found that the full and formal name of the Church was indeed used in the article in first reference. Good enough for me. Furthermore, it is not really a New York Times article, but rather, an Associated Press wire story and, as such, apt to appear in any of hundreds of news outlets around the country. Sunstoned should have made that clear. It is misleading to imply, even unintentionally, that the story was written by someone on staff at the Times when all they were doing was running a wire story. 2

One could argue that Coronavirus is a win for Satan. He has slowed temple work, missionary work, and other things to almost to a standstill at least on a temporary basis. Lots of good people are dying off as well. Long term many people will be hurt in their finances. The world has changed a lot over the past few weeks and hard to argue for the better. I am sure Satan is pleased.

All newspapers have the option of selecting news wire entries. Those that interest the editor or those that they have room for. Therefore it is the "responsibility" of the editor to having placed them within their pages? But I agree it should have been made clear the source from where it came.

The final tally of the effect of the changes has not been counted yet. While war and disease and the like are evils they can lead to great things. I don't think things will go back to the way they were. It is also more difficult to ignore existential realities when surrounded by death. I remember Nephi seeing wars growing and pleading with God for a famine to end the war and drive people to repent. 2

I agree with you and was just speaking tongue in cheek. I do not believe in what Carl Sagan coined as a demon haunted world view. Elements and natural forces happen, just like most this in life. There is no rhyme or reason. It just is.

A lot of this stuff is the result of our fallen state and the fallen world we now live in. If we were as Adam and Ever were, now, as resurrected beings, this Corona virus thing wouldn't be a big deal, if it even existed, which it wouldn't if the world itself was in a celestial state. What is is for a reason, not just "because" with no explanation for it. And what is now isn't necessarily the way it should be or the way it will be when things get better than they are now. Which will happen. Things will get better, someday, and for good reasons.

I agree, but I think it's a bit much to expect casual readers, who don't pay much attention at all, if any, to bylines and datelines to understand the distinction.
