their lives are a mess in many areas (relationships, career, school, family, church, etc.)

This is an accurate description of my experience w/ Millenials in multiple wards, stakes, cities, states. The exceptions have been maybe 1 out of 10.

Not much is expected of them growing up, their schools don't challenge them, their parents and grandparents got divorced, they study majors in college that won't possibly get them decent jobs and their parents don't care, don't tell them when they make mistakes, dont care what they look at online nor how addictive smartphones are.

Why is this so often the case?

Because morality is stereotyped.

Women get told to stop gossiping,  men get told to stop doing sex related things and treat women right.

Could you imagine the shock and horror if Bonnie Cordon stood up in October women's session and told the young women to stop watching porn and masturbating?

edit: To put the question into perspective. From 2016 statistics, 60% of pornhub's utah viewership are millennials, and 19% are female. So slightly older than the YW ages, but it's not like age has ever been an actual barrier to stop access to adult content. (Can't find anything more recent that 2016 as I'm only using what I can find on google cache, not visiting the actual site)

Well, that's a relief! ;):D

Because men are more aggressive, hostile, prone to pornography?

Whatever the reason, I find it less effective

I think part of it is because they hear of how so many women are suffering from depression because they can't be the perfect Molly Mormon that they think they should be.

It's probably because men and women are different and have different strengths and weaknesses (in general).  But I agree with you in that I do think that as women we would benefit from being chastised a bit more (though we can be quick to become defensive at any hint that we may have a weakness that needs to be addressed) and that men would benefit from being praised more.

But I also know some women who fall to pieces and into self loathing at any hint of chastisement and so I get why our leaders are hesitant to go there with us.  As women we are much more "in our heads" than men are typically, and couple that with someone saying we are doing badly at something and it can quickly spiral in a bad mental health kind of way.

I agree.  There's nothing wrong with "Soup for the Soul" books. Even if you are far beyond the "milk" stage in your gospel studies, other people are not. Many of those books are very helpful when people are struggling, or looking for answers on more basic religious topics.

Even if you are a thorough carnivore when it comes to religious studies, lighter books are excellent fodder for quotes to sprinkle in talks, hang on the wall or give you something to discuss with other members. It doesn't hurt to say, "Yes" when your friend offers to lend you their latest read for that alone.

At any rate, you can find serious books at Deseret Books...but it's too expensive to actually buy them there. 😝

I agree with this popular post.

I mention the following point not to nitpick but by way of public education on a matter I see recur fairly frequently. The correct name of the company is not Deseret Books, but Deseret Book. It’s a shortened form of the proper name Deseret Book Company.

Retention over what time period?

I believe what is being surveyed is people of all age groups and whether they have continued to be active in the church, their particular beliefs in the BoM, etc.  For Millennials, this would be people who are active in the church, attend seminary, then as adults they stop attending, stop believing in church truth claims, the BoM, etc.

Does any one think it likely we will see a greater increase in female "area" leadership like what was announced for Europe?  Or, what about a greater role for the stake president's wife or the bishop's wife?

I wish the wives of the apostles would speak, not just the apostles. In priesthood session when the first presidency talk about their families, I wish that the final three speakers would be their wives, not the first presidency. Give a different perspective.

I wish they would as well. I'll never forget when my mom and I went to listen to Camilla Kimball and her daughter or daughters, can't remember, in the RS building near the church office building. So maybe it's all about the setting.

Some more predictions for GC announcements:

-The talk “Telestial Glory and Why You are All Going There if You Keep This UP” will be controversial.

-New Priesthood curriculum with next year being focused on demonology and how to summon and bind demons. The Relief Society will learn to summon and bind jinn instead. The Youth will work on summoning and binding conventional ghosts.

-New Priesthood ordinance for repelling beta and gamma radiation to prepare us for Armageddon. Note it does not cover alpha radiation. Wash your food before eating it.

-Release of new self-improvement course designed to help you prep everything you and your family will need for the inevitable trek to Jackson county.

-President Nelson slips up and starts musing about something he heard at a recent conference at Adam-ondi-Ahman.

-Elder Holland’s talk on usury laws and how it relates to Onanism will be considered to be particularly good.

-Missionaries called home so that God can preach his own sermons for a year or two.

-Return of the holy principle of concubinage, this time for both men and women.

-Ten Tribes identified as Tibetans. Just Tibetans.

-A cryptic prophecy about fiery hurricanes filled with crocodiles destroying all in their path will be given. Interpretations will be controversial and divisive as the Brethren refuse to provide an interpretation. It all becomes moot when a hurricane sucks up a burning oil platform spill and then crashes into Florida and shows that it wasn’t allegorical at all.

-Return of the United Order.

-Three minutes later the United Order is repealed as the Lord tells us we obviously still aren’t ready.

-“Nearer my God to Thee” will be one of the hymns.

I don’t know that every apostle’s wife desires to speak. I think it should be left up to the wife, and I don’t believe there should be an implied expectation that she does so, as there likely would be if it became institutionalized that wives must speak during this or that time slot.

Added later: I recall being at a meeting in which President Hinckley invited his wife to stand beside him as he went on and on extolling her virtues. He then asked her, “Do you have anything to say?”

”Not a thing” was her unhesitating reply.

“Well, sit down, then,” he said.

It was a delightfully spontaneous moment. I thought, “Good for her!”

My sister used to work at Deseret Book back when she was in school, and she was constantly surprised at how many people didn't know that they offer price matching.

Who's saying they should be?

I don't get it.

I guess that's how General COnference messages were interpreted in prior generations?
