Two of my not so active sons, they resigned, are telling me that for the hosana shout tomorrow they want people to do it outside. I just don't believe it, am I wrong or right?

Where did they get that idea?  All the ones I have been a part of were indoors and there is nothing indicating it is not in the newsroom...plus many watch on their TVs so how could they join?

Who wants it done outside? The Church leadership? Why?

My guess is that some ill-informed  individual surmised that the Hosannah Shout can only be done in sizable groups and therefore, in keeping with social distancing guidelines, it will have to be done outside.

I’m quite certain, though, that what the Brethren have in mind is people watching on television at home in their living rooms and participating as they are guided by a leader standing at the pulpit in the auditorium where the broadcast is originating. That’s how my family and I plan to do it.

What a solemn assembly is and why President Nelson said ...

SALT LAKE CITY — On Saturday morning, President Russell M. Nelson announced an unexpected solemn assembly, accompanied by a sacred Hosanna Shout, to be held at the end of the Sunday morning session of the 190th Annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Is President Nelson preparing the world for The Second Coming with the entire Church giving the Hosanna Shout?

More imo likely instilling a sense of purpose and global community (he used global a couple of times iirc) among the Saints for the tough times ahead...which could probably be significantly less tough if we really commit to Saint'hood' in terms of helping others, such as through fasts and offerings.

But I am open to anything...

Historically, a Hosanna Shout has been used to introduce new scripture.  He also promised a unique new announcement.  Maybe we will be receiving new scripture.  The Proclamation to the World on the Family, perhaps?

How, exactly, is that supposed to work?  If people participating remotely via available media (which is practically everyone, except for those who are on the program) step outside, they will not be able to hear the person (presumably President Nelson) leading the Hosanna Shout.  If they can't hear him, it won't happen in [relative] unison.  If it doesn't happen in unison ... chaos.  With due respect, I think that, sometimes, rumors such as this are planted by those who aren't such good terms with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (I'm not necessarily referring to your sons, but, rather, to those to those from whom they might be getting their information) because such chaos suits their agenda.

Something about shouting from the rooftops. I thought, did I miss that in conference? But it's as Kenngo says possibly. They either didn't understand the expression or they are making fun.

The ones I’ve been involved with were both indoors.

HiJolly dropped a rumor in Social Hall weeks ago about what's happening and I think he's probably right! 😄 We'll see!

But I would really like new scripture. And for Jesus to come back.

In 1987 when I was finishing the St. George Marathon, I turned from Bluff Street and started toward the finish line. Many people were sitting in their yards cheering us on. I could hear the general conference speakers very clearly as I finished. People had their windows and doors open with conference playing in their homes.

It has rarely been used for that purpose in modern times. It is done as a part of the proceedings at temple dedications. It was also done at the dedication of the Conference Center in 2000.

Why does everyone here seem to be ignoring the idea that it’s simply a way to give unified expression of joy to observe 200 years since the dawn of the latter-day Restoration?

Nobody is ignoring the idea.  Just a little speculation.  No harm in that.

Because it accompanied a new proclamation from the apostles. ;)

The proceedings from the April 1980 conference observing the sesquicentennial of the organization of the  Church are still fresh in my mind. I figured the pattern of issuing a proclamation on that occasion would be followed.

I doubt it, no other proclamation has ever been canonized, does anyone even know what the 1865 proclamation even said?!

It was handy that they sang the “Hosannah Anthem” during the dedication of the Conference Center in 2000. That gave them an archival recording they could use for this bicentennial conference with the limitations imposed by the pandemic.

It was wonderful.  Neither my wife nor I could withhold tears during Elder Johnson’s heartfelt benediction.

Apparently he had a hard time withholding them himself.

I appreciated being able to engage in the Hosannah Shout at home in an intimate setting with my family, even as I knew we were doing it simultaneously with thousands throughout the Church. We’ll probably never have that opportunity again.

Here's a list of the previous five proclamations:

Proclamation of the First Presidency to the Saints Scattered Abroad, issued on Jan. 15, 1841, in Nauvoo, Illinois — Signed by Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon and Hyrum Smith, the proclamation details the progress of the Church despite hardships and persecutions.

Proclamation of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued on April 6, 1845, in New York City, New York, and on Oct. 22, 1845, in Liverpool, England — Issued by the Twelve since the martyrdom dissolved the First Presidency, the proclamation was printed and distributed on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. It proclaimed that God had spoken from the heavens and restored the gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth and included a voice of warning as well as an invitation.

Proclamation of the First Presidency and the Twelve Apostles, issued on Oct. 21, 1865, in Salt Lake City — This proclamation was sent to Church members to correct certain theories about the nature of God and established the order that new doctrine is to be announced only by the First Presidency.

Proclamation from the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued on April 6, 1980, from Fayette, New York — President Spencer W. Kimball announced the proclamation during the Sunday morning session of the April 1980 general conference and the 150th anniversary of the organization of the Church. He and then-Elder Gordon B. Hinckley joined conference proceedings from the restored Peter Whitmer Sr. farmhouse, with Elder Hinckley reading the proclamation, which detailed the Church’s restoration, progress, doctrine, mission and message.

The Family: A Proclamation to the World, issued Sept. 23, 1995, in Salt Lake City — Read by President Gordon B. Hinckley at the General Relief Society Meeting leading into October 1995 general conference, with the proclamation’s purpose to “warn and forewarn” the world and offering an official Church statement on family, marriage, gender roles and human sexuality.
