In the thread regarding an upcoming FAIR round table discussion, the question was raised of how common it is for members to have family who have left the Church. I know these type of polls do not really mean much but I suspect there are many here who either attend the FAIR conference or would attend if it were held closer to where they live. I know I fall into that second category.

So I am curious how many here have family members who have left. For the purposes of this poll I define a family member as a relative with whom you still have some sort of relationship. In other words, someone with whom you would have the potential to talk to about his or her relationship to the Church. I will leave it up to each poll participant to decide if they think the family member has "left" or not.

I welcome feedback on how to adjust the poll.

On edit:

On my side of the family I would say that out of 60-70 people 45-50 are still in the church.

In my wife's family out of 30-35 only about 10 are active.

I am divorced with an unbaptized son but he is active in the sense that he comes to church and seems content as much as 11 yr old boys are. but i dunno crazily enough no one in my family is inactive. My parents, 3 sibs and my sisters' hubbies and their kids are all active. My dad used to be inactive but is active now and who knows we may have members go inactive but currently all are active and I am by no means bragging about it.

Wow.  I haven't actually thought of this until seeing this question.  My five siblings and I are all adults.  Of the six of us, three are totally out of the Church.

And just to be clear, I'm one of the ones who is still in the Church.

My wife's immediate family is faring better.  She has nine brothers and sisters, and of the ten, none have left.

Of the 4 members in my sealed eternal family, only one is "out" of the Church... and that person loves the Church, still believes parts of doctrine but has ideas of their own, watches BYU-TV, gen conf., but does not and never did have a testimony... we can talk about spiritual matters, and I send all sorts of articles from Church News both spiritual and newsy... when that person is gone, I will complete the temple ordinances and that person can choose to accept them... or not...

Adult siblings: 1 out of 4 are inactive, though wouldn't consider himself fully non-mormon.

All siblings: 1 out of 10...with 1 other that I'm uncertain where he'll land right now.

Aunts and uncles: 1 or 2 out of 26. 1 has fully left another still attends but it's pretty clear he doesn't have the warmest feelings to the church, per se.

Cousins that are adults: 4 or 5...6 out of ....crap, i don't even know how many cousins I have. I think 20-25 adults.

Grandparents: 1/4 (not including the other 4 that were never LDS). He was excommunicated.

So considering, we're mostly LDS and mostly active to some extent.

With luv,

Of all that joined or were born in the covenant since I joined as a young adult in 1975 (some 30 people in total), one has had his name removed. The rest are all active. A couple that lapsed for a few years in their young adult years have since reactivated and their spouses have joined the Church.

Hmmm...

2 parents active.

All 4 grandparents died active.

All 6 sibllings and 2 in-laws active.

About two/thirds of all my aunts and uncles are active.

About two/thirds of my cousins are in varying states of activity.

Your situation sounds almost identical to mine.  I have 5 siblings.  Four haven't been active for years, but I believe they're still on the records of the church.  I'm still active and still in the church, I have one sister that is all in. My husband has 7 siblings and they are all totally active believing members, he's still active also, but not so much in the believing department, but deep down it's possible he is in certain areas.

In my family none have officially left, however I'm only nominally active and a couple of my siblings are NOM's.  In my extended family (from good pioneer stock), I'd say a little over half are active.

Both my parents, my older brother and i to some extent have all been out. All are back now, with my brother being the most recent. Out of the four, i think i was the only one who stopped believing it all. In the extended family there are all varieties of activity and belief.

I'm one of 4 siblings. One was inactive for a while but all are active now along with the spouses. Parents and parents in law are active. My wife is one of 6 and she has one unmarried brother who is inactive.

All grandparents are active or passed away active.

I have a few inactive cousins but have no idea how many or why they are.

I have a brother who is inactive, but still believes and would consider himself LDS if asked.  Everyone else in my family is active, so I answered "None".

My dad served a mission and married my mom in the temple, but he later became an Atheist.  He never offically left the church - he just stopped going.  My mom, my siblings, and I are all active.  Most of my aunts and uncles have left the church and some cousins too.

I have a younger sister and brother who no longer go to church, but both still profess to be LDS.  Our family are the only LDS members in the extended family. My little brother was an athlete in high school and college and has never really been very interested in attending church on a consistent basis.  He married a Baptist preachers daughter and has attended church with her at times, but remains one of those people who just does not make a place for organized religion in his life.

We rarely bring it up when we are all together - who goes to church or who does not.  We just talk about life and at times that included gospel discussions and at other times it does not.  There were seven of us children; mom and dad passed away many years ago.  We tend to just enjoy being together.

Family of 8 children (7 boys and 1 girl), we are all adults now. 7 are married with kids. The oldest is divorced, no kids, and the only one out of the Church. All married in the temple, all served missions except the lone girl in the family. No matter how much all of us want it (especially my dad), I fear he just will never return to the Church. The only possibility is if he finds some NOM who really wants to raise her kids in the Church. He couldn't be married to a TBM nor would a TBM want to marry him.

edit: BTW, I would just love to hear all your guys' stories. I listen to Mormon Expression Voices because of my obsession with hearing mormon stories, but they're all so negative and skewed with a strong agenda. I'm sure there are some very faithful and amazing stories we could hear.

My parents are both converts and the only members from their families. I am active but my brother is not and doesn't consider himself a member even though his records are still in the Church. He was antagonistic towards the Church, members, the doctrine, and even our family for a long time. Now he views all of it favourably, even the doctrine, even if he doesn't believe it.

Seven kids (4 served missions- 6 temple married) six out with spouses and children -- remaining one is a New Order Mormon due to TBM parents, spouse and kids.
