Rumors of Changes to Temple Worship

All the temples I’ve been in usually have a chapel of some sort in theme.

You must have been in larger temples. The temple I serve in has no chapel of any kind in it.

The chapel is where patrons go to wait until it is time for the endowment session to begin, whereupon they proceed as a group to the ordinance room. What serves that purpose in your temple if there is no chapel? Do they go directly to the ordinance room and wait?

Where do people gather to await going into an endowment room?  Do you just go right into the endowment room and wait to begin?  Portland has a good-sized chapel on the first floor, in addition to the Assembly Room on the third floor... on our Stake Temple Nights, we have so many attending we go to the Assembly Room and have a meeting/talks, then go down to the four endowment rooms where we use all four at once.  These nights are always a special experience... they have brought in extra chairs to the endowment rooms... I always imagined  this would be what the millennium will be like...

Yup - not every temple is large and spacious like the ones dotting the Wasach Front!

Honestly the "changes", if there is anything, are probably minor but I'm still SO EXCITED! I just like change (as long as its positive) and I literally crave new things pouring into the church, which is not very often.

I haven’t posted much for awhile but have been following this thread closely. Praying that the rumored change is true that women will now covenant to God rather than their husband. Also praying that sealings will become equal in that husbands give themselves, not just wives

I haven’t been to an endowment session in three years because of the existing covenant structure. I know others have ways to deal with the wording but I could not. It’s simply contrary to Gods plan for my marriage (not passing judgment on anyone else’s marriage) and so I could not in good faith participate. I’ve been a TR holder my entire life and still often attend the temple for youth baptisms with my children and in my calling leading the ward youth.

This has been a huge issue for my family. My wife still attends all temple ceremonies. She greatly misses my presence and struggles to explain to others why I’m not there. My oldest son graduates HS this year and is set to receive his endownment before leaving on a mission this summer. If the rumors are true, this would be a godsend indeed.

I feel the same.  Really hoping that is one of the changes!

Patrons queue up in the change room until there is a worker there to provide that part of the ordinance. From there, they queue up in the corridor until the door to the endowment room is opened. Then they wait in the endowment room until it is time for the session to start. Our goal is to have the endowment room open and ready at least 15 minutes before the session is scheduled to begin.

We also use our chapel for meetings with members of the temple presidency (on some ward/stake temple nights).  Is there a room in your temple where something like that can take place?

Not really. There's a room where each shift holds its preparation meetings. That could work if it wasn't being used and if the group were small enough.

Your temple reminds me of the Memphis temple some 17? years ago. I went there for my brothers wedding. When you walk in there is the recommended desk and then right to the side was the doors the font. If I remember right, the ceiling room was a short walk to the other side. The endowment room was back behind the desk, but back there has really faded for me. Sound familiar?

I recently travelled for a wedding to a temple that sounds like this, but ours is larger. The baptistery has its own entrance.

The 2 changes I've heard by someone who claims to have gone to the temple yesterday in Nauvoo is that...

1- women no longer veil their face

2- women no longer covenant to hearken to their husbands

However, I'm hoping the church will release information about this. What do you think? Will the church make these changes known, or just wait for people to figure it out as they attend?

ETA- Curious question

IF a change was made to a covenant, would a person automatically be bound through the new/updated covenant even if they hadn't been back to the temple to hear and accept it, or would that person still be bound to the old/outdated covenant he/she made?

I'd be surprised if the Church said anything specifically but maybe they would say there are changes but leave it up to the attendee to figure out what they are

Went to the temple last Friday and it was the same ceremony I am used to.  Unless yesterday was the big change. It doesn’t seem to have happened.

Sounds like the change took place New Years Day at the Nauvoo Temple and everywhere else today. If anything major changed of course haha

Wouldn't this be normal?

No need for it. Workers do not wear it.

But often times when there are few patrons workers will fill in when needed for ceremonial prayer etc.

Pretty common to have it just in case you want to do a session as a patron, but certainly almost never used.

Unless you've studied all the variations of the endowment on record since the restoration.  The age isn't the only consideration.

1842, 1877, 1923, 1975, 1990, 2005

Just to name a few major milestone years for significant adjustments.

Not to mention smaller changes like sitting when we used to stand.

Nothing like that was said at my shift today.

Maybe they are just discontinuing laundry service. ;)

But today is the second!

For one going to the temple for his/her own endowment, it is "one complete story."

Yes and incorporates initiatories.

I wonder if a patron will be able to do multiple names in a single session, simply by making separate covenants, then doing multiple veil ceremonies at the end.  A lot of the changes in the last three decades seem to have been intended to reduce patron embarrassment or discomfort. At this point, the two most uncomfortable practices still extant are: (1) brother ordinance workers “receiving” sister patrons at the veil; and (2) one’s acting as a sealing proxy with a member of the opposite gender who isn’t one’s spouse. The latter, if it were changed, would exclude singles, and I can’t see that happening. However, the delegation of priesthood authority to sister ordinance workers to allow them to receive sister patrons at the veil doesn’t seem outrageous to me.

The receiver IS Eloheim, with the worker being a proxy. Women would have to be able to be proxies for men then an vice versa

Is it that uncomfortable for very many?  I am pretty prudish in terms of relationships with men not my husband and neither has bothered me, so it surprises me that this is an issue.  (Not saying it is wrong to feel awkward in such things, but just surprised...I am naturally very shy and there are a number of things I have to push myself to do because they make me nervous like prayer circles, but the above never occurred to me).

Some women push themselves into the veil and that makes ME very uncomfortable. In cases like that the positions of the hands...  well figure it out. Not good. Hard to keep the spirit with you in that situation.

I went to the temple before the 1990 changes and at the veil I was very uncomfortable with being the sister patron being introduced at the veil with the male temple worker. And remember my sister being told by someone in the know that it was a problem for the males as well and that is why it was changed.

Agreed on both sides

I doubt it, it's like new laws aren't typically retroactive, so you would be held accountable to the light and knowledge you received, not what you could have received
