How Many Callings Do You Have?

My wife has had two callings (one is stake, one is ward) for at least four years. This week she received a second ward calling without being released from either of her current callings. It got interesting when a counselor in the bishopric called and asked me if he could visit because he had a "proposal." His proposal was to give me a calling in the ward. He seemed nervous and that's probably why he said too much. He told me that he was desperate because some of the members had quit their callings. After I politely declined his request I started wondering how many members have multiple callings.

 

Note: For this topic home teaching and visiting teaching do not count as callings.

I answered, but I'm not sure what this poll is driving at. Callings vary greatly in terms of burden. For instance, I can think of at least 6 callings that together would not equal the burden of a bishop or RS president.

I am a ward missionary and don't do much really but the EQ Pres. has two callings and they don't have a exec. sec and haven't for about 4 months? or something-not that I want it I am just saying!

I'm currently serving as counselor to the Bishop.  My wife is serving as a primary teacher.

 

We couldn't function as a ward if everyone had JUST ONE calling unless we decided not to fill many of the callings.  For example, our RS and EQ have two instructors in each.  Since the presidency also teaches at least once per month, it means those individuals called as RS/EQ teachers only prepare a lesson once every three weeks.  So, some of them have also been asked to take "non-Sunday" callings as well.

 

We also have combined callings in some cases... like a primary teacher who teaches one of senior primary classes may also serve as an Activity Days leader (so she'll interact with the girls on both Sunday and the weekly activities).

 

I'll also say that a couple years back our ward had grown so large that it was split.  Before the split we had SO MANY active adults that we were creating callings for them.  We were putting team teachers in every class... asking presidencies if they wanted a third counselor... etc.

Between summer school, work, and transitioning from university I've been a nomad this summer. So currently none.

 

I'll be a temple worker in Calgary in the fall though (already had the interview, just have to make the move), and I'm assuming I'll get some sort of ward calling (I'm hoping Sunday School, but I'm open for anything).

I direct the ward choir, lead the singing in sacrament meeting and play the piano in priesthood meeting. Strictly speaking, three but they all kind of bleed in together.

I currently have one (RS) but was recently told that my name was brought up as potentially being called for a non-ward calling. I don't know if that would be in addition to or instead of the ward calling, but I suspect the latter.

When we moved here a couple of years ago, I told the bishop that I would consider accepting a calling if it was something I felt I could do in good conscience. They haven't asked.

Twice since I told by bishop I wanted not callings his 2nd counselor asked me to teach Primary. Once with my wife, who did not want to teach either, and once with another brother in the ward.  The last time I said to 2nd councilor "I told the bishop I do not want a calling especially a teaching calling. Please have him see me before extending another offer.   But I would be happy to take a calling where I could work with the poor or the elderly and assist them in some capacity."  We will see if they take me up on it.

The last calling I had was as a Spanish translator at a free medical clinic. That I had no problem accepting, and it was a great experience.

I'm coordinator for the Church welfare orchard (a couple thousand acres of plums, pears, peaches, apricots, cherries, etc).  Also I've been in the Sunday School presidency for about a year, which hardly counts since we've never really done anything other than make sure classes were covered.  Then I had a brilliant idea a few weeks ago...

 

I texted the bishop and said "I'd like to teach gospel doctrine since brother so and so seems a bit overburdened teaching every week.  Plus this would virtually force me to stay for the whole block of meetings."  (I have a habit of often going home after sacrament meeting.) 

 

It didn't take long.  They called me the next day I think.  Man, talk about buyer's remorse!  Still, I've taught twice so far and both were good experiences.

I am beginning to wonder if part of the trial of living the gospel is enduring boredom. I just find myself hoping the capacity to endure boredom is not useful in the eternities.

GD teacher for the last few months....the calling Isn't for every week though. We rotate a lot so I have a lesson to plan about every few weeks. I really enjoy both. Ysa's tend to over extend callings imho. Luckily most can't happen for me because of my work schedule.
