How Many Callings Do You Have?

I would be tempted to kill if it got me my GD teaching calling back or even my GP calling back.

Beats the incredibly dull meetings I attend now where I get to listen to a bunch of dullards who imagine they are profound pontificating on many philosophies of men with the occasional torn out of context scripture reference thrown in.

I am beginning to wonder if part of the trial of living the gospel is enduring boredom. I just find myself hoping the capacity to endure boredom is not useful in the eternities.

Bishop for 5 1/2 years.

My wife is 1st counselor in the YW presidency and a temple worker.

I should be released in the next month or so; I plan on joining her in the temple.

I am Ward Organist, 1st councillor in RS, and Family History consultant (called but not set apart, so not active in that calling), and a temple ordinance worker in the Preston, England Temple 2 days per week (this is my favourite, but I didn't include it in my response :/)

 

My husband has just been released as a councillor on the bishopric as we had a change in bishop, and been called on to the Stake High Council.

Brethren, home teaching is not just another program. It is the priesthood way of watching over the Saints and accomplishing the mission of the Church. Home teaching is not just an assignment. It is a sacred calling.

 

 

Bill Reel and I went the rounds on this a while ago.

 

As I recall, he and I were arguing from different frames of reference. He was speaking from a narrower, administrative, handbook-based definition. I was speaking from a broader concept relating to ministry and service, consistent with what President Benson expressed in this talk.

 

I could see where Bill was coming from, but I don't believe either President Benson or I were wrong.

And lest it be said that I am relying on old sources, here is a Mormon Newsroom piece that gives the quote I provided above from President Benson. Apparently, the Church wants it understood among the general public that home teaching is a calling, not just an assignment.

I'm a bishop, and my wife is a primary teacher and cub leader. 

 

We were hoping that the cub leader calling would, well, just go away with the Church eliminating scouting. Doesn't look like that is in the cards anytime soon . . .

At one point I held two and was asked to take a third.  I said no, it was too much.  Now I have one: Stake Welfare/Emergency Preparedness Specialist.

Only kid my daughter begged me not to babysit because he was so violent with other kids. 15 years later I heard he turned into the sweetest young man, just like his parents.

I volunteered to teach him on his own for awhile. That was fun having to never close my eyes during prayer or he would be out the door.

I remember taking off one Sunday and having to chase him through the Cultural Hall at top speed to get to the RS door before he could so his mom could have a few more minutes to herself.  We passed right in front of the Elders Quorum on the stage.  I was in bare feet because I would sit on the floor with him rather than on the chairs.  Safer that way.  That was the Sunday I learned not to close my eyes during prayers.

 

I bet a number of Elders went home and told their wives how grateful they were for their own kids that Sunday.  

 

I got to entertain my family with a story each week.  We still talk about them from time to time and chuckle.

Not really.  I like to move around---well, have to move around---as much as any young kid so it is a blessing to have the excuse to do it instead of sitting through an additional two hours.

 

And it was a change of pace of the teaching I had done in Primary for, let's see how long....15 years (since I was 17 minus when I was back at BYU and single, they had me teach Primary during summer).

When we moved here a couple of years ago, I told the bishop that I would consider accepting a calling if it was something I felt I could do in good conscience. They haven't asked.

If I were your bishop I'd be sure to find something useful for you to do! Don't know what it would be, because I'm not your bishop. Thank heavens.

Seems like I answered this poll before, but I guess I didn't.

 

Anyway, my callings are:

 

• Ward:
  • Website administrator
  • HP Group Instructor
• Stake
  • Emergency Communications Specialist (Ham Radio)
  • Young Single Adult Branch Finance Clerk

 

Seems like I'm very busy, but the total time commitment is not particularly large.  Compared to the workload as ward clerk (that I held for 8 years once upon a time), these callings don't add up to anything significant. I almost feel under-utilized.

 

My wife's sole calling is:

 

• RS Visiting Teaching District Supervisor - which she cannot currently perform and I am subbing for her - this only involves getting the monthly visit reports from her District's sisters.  I send an email to the sisters requesting they send a report.

No, I hadn't even watched until now. I wonder who Reed's parents were. She most likely mentioned them at one time.
