Announcement that Temples are being Shut Down Permanently

Oops, overstated the situation. The temple cafeterias are all being shut down permanently. This misstatement was totally natural and not at all planned to increase the shock value of the title. And no, I couldn’t just go up to the title and fix it. Why can’t I? What is this, the Spanish Inquisition?

I guess if you are going to do it now is the time when the staff isn’t working anyways. This ruins my cheap “dinner and a movie” dates where I don’t have to pay for the movie.

I read online, albeit not from an official source but you can still eat in the cafeteria area but the temple is getting out of the food/service business

I have never eaten in a temple cafeteria. How are the prices for the food?

😒 Snicker. Won't affect me. The Payson temple has no cafeteria - only a smaller break room after a recent renovation. So, I won't know what I'm missing... except for the free movie.

Yeah, my friend used to cook there. Sad change. One thing I think the Dallas temple did well. The exterior certainly is nothing to get excited about.

In provo I was kinda always annoyed by it. But I'm a vegetarian. There was a ton of meat there and the veggie options were...let's say not the best. some days it felt like almost everything had meat in it, including foods that didn't need meat. One time I bought some bread there and even that had chunks of meat in it. I more often gave up and brought small snacks when I was working there. When I didn't have time I'd cross my fingers that it was a good meal week and I had at least one or two foods I could eat.

There have been big problems with personnel, management, accounting and all that.  All employees had to have a recommend, that was sometimes an issue.

Legal compliance with food service regs was a problem, food poisoning etc- NONE of this had anything with the "business" of the church, it was just another administrative drag.

Money changers in the Lord's house

It's a good move.

Temples should be temples, not restaurants.

It will make the recorders job much easier, and he can concentrate on actual church stuff

The alternative is always to bring your own lunch, and it remains

Or grab take out from your favorite restaurant.

Do some temples actually have workers doing shifts so long that they need a meal break of some kind? When I was actively serving as a temple worker pre-Covid, my shift was five hours long. And I was usually lucky if at some point I had five minutes to run to the toilet and stop by the bubbler.

The food at the Idaho Falls temple was known for being really good and for specifically having amazing scones (fry bread for those thinking they were like the scones from England) that people would travel for.  There will be some areas where this announcement will be a hard and sad transition.

Well, that's a shame.  Both UK temples had cafeterias and the food was good and cheap.  And both temples are a considerable distance from places to eat.  I always found it easier to eat there, and going to the temple is an all day trip for most people.  Guess it's a packed lunch from now on, hope I remember!  Or go hungry till I can get to a store or cafe.  Maybe someone enterprising will be able to open a food establishment nearby! Btw, temple workers usually stay in accommodation in the grounds for a week and the rooms have a small kitchen so they will be able to make meals for themselves.

It's going to be a big change for the temple workers who are at the temple all day long.

Sorry, bluebell, I edited my post as you posted!  Temple workers in the UK stay for a week at a time, not just one day.  For many it's too far to go for one day.  There is an accommodation block where they have kitchens and can get their own food.  I am guessing most already take food and do their own meals and don't rely on the cafeteria.  I don't remember seeing many in the cafeteria.
