Perhaps those brief interactions will be more problematic? It sure seems like someone could check pretty easy. Sydney's current Delta outbreak started with an American FedEx air crew infecting their limousine driver, and he then spread it to complete strangers at a shopping centre. CCTV allowed authorities there to confirm that contacts were genuinely 'fleeting': Quote NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant described the Bondi Junction incident as a "scarily fleeting" encounter. "They are clearly facing each other but it is literally someone moving across from each other for a moment, close, but momentary," Dr Chant said ... Griffith University virologist Lara Herrero said in the case that was captured on CCTV, the virus would have had lingered in the air long enough for the unfortunate person to take a breath in and be infected. "You have to be so unlucky, and the poor person is exactly that, just incredibly unlucky," Dr Herrero said. "But the data so far is suggesting perhaps if it were the original strain, the Wuhan strain, it would not have transmitted that quickly ... Queensland's Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young has warned we are seeing "very fleeting contact" in some cases. "If you remember at the start of this pandemic, I spoke about 15 minutes of close contact being a concern," she said. "Now, it looks like it's five to 10 seconds. "That's a concern. "The risk is so much higher now than it was only a year ago." Edited August 8, 2021 by Hamba Tuhan 3

This was my point. And this family is not alone with regrets for family members not getting the vaccine. We must search for the roots why people are not getting vaccinated in the USA because future mutations can occur. Just think what the US would be like if there was no Delta variant. Or the world. I am sure that vaccine companies are upgrading their vaccines for delta. But other mutations can happen because of people not getting the vaccine. I do believe that a vaccine will eventually come along that will tackle most variants of the virus or make the virus very mild if caught. This would make masks perhaps un-necessary. The vulnerable will be constantly getting boosters when the original doses no longer produce the antibodies. How to get people to keep getting the boosters until it is unnecessary? 2

This is the problem and why Delta is such a threat. The Australians have been very slow rolling out the vaccines. This needed not be the case. Since the country is a member of the commonwealth, they could have had millions of doses of the Astra vaccine.
Popular Post Thinking Posted August 8, 2021 Popular Post Posted August 8, 2021 Most have heard of the breakthrough cases - those people who were vaccinated, yet still contracted Covid-19. Some people use those anecdotes to justify not getting the vaccine. The vaccines are not 100% effective and were never advertised as such. What does it mean for a vaccine to have 95% efficacy, for example? During the testing phase volunteers were given either the vaccine or a placebo. Those who were given the placebo contracted Covid-19 at 19 times the rate as those who were given the vaccine. I got vaccinated. 5

They were created to keep out hippies and have stuck around ever since. Same with the “Please wait to be seated” signs. Except for the most high class restaurants it used to be you would seat yourself. With the need to keep hippies out they insisted that people had to be seated so they could more expeditiously get rid of the riff-raff. It is not part of any health code. The Society for Barefoot Living checked and it is just a store policy we are stuck with until those “long hairs” are finally gone and the owners can put away the signs and no longer worry about the hippie scourge. I remember the bubonic plague outbreaks in the hippy encampments around Taos, NM, when I lived in Los Alamos.

Also, those who have been vaccinated with two doses have mild symptoms. And this is important. No vaccine is 100 percent effective. Anthony Rizzo, the new Yankee just tested positive for Covid. At the moment he is feeling some symptoms but he is doing alright. Asked why he wasn't vaccinated, he said, he was waiting for more data. I would hope that he gets the vaccine when he can and encourages others to do the same.
why me Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 (edited) One of problems that is serious is that the FDA has not approved the vaccines yet. This is a major obstacle. Can one imagine what would happen if they don't approve the vaccine? Chaos. And the antivaccers would be smiling from ear to ear. I have no idea why they are taking so long to approve the vaccines. They may just save lives when they do since the hot air in the antivaccer balloon would be let out. But if they don't approve them....there will be trouble. Edited August 8, 2021 by why me
Chum Posted August 8, 2021 Posted August 8, 2021 I recently railroaded my (occasionally homeless) ex into getting her first dose. I typically lose to her self-sabotaging behaviors but this time it worked out. Caught her on a good day I guess. 1

My personal analysis is that this isn't a major factor. It hasn't been part of the litany I hear from the intentionally unvaccinated. I wonder how unique the US is with it's EUA. Vac rates for countries that have available vax + std approval might indicate whether EUA is a factor.

Johnson & Johnson has not submitted their application for full approval yet but from what I have read they will probably submit soon and get approved near the end of the year or the beginning of next year. I am skeptical that this change will increase vaccination rates. Edited August 8, 2021 by The Nehor 1

There will be some positive effects. I believe the Department of Defense is waiting for full approval before mandating the military all get vaccinated. We may see the same in other agencies. I expect private businesses may also be more bold about requiring that their employees get the vaccine. I don’t think it will convince the anti-vaxxer crowd.

My husband and I went out to dinner (restaurant full and people coughing, no masks of course) with long time friends last night, I know dumb huh, and played games afterwards even. And there's one who is holding out not getting the vaccine because he's waiting for more data as well. I tried to empathize stating that I was that way with the flu shot, wouldn't even get it when volunteering at a hospital about three years ago. And the hospital said I'd need to wear a mask. Back then I scoffed at that, nowadays no biggie. So I quit volunteering. Anyway, trying not to shove it in his face, and hoping he didn't feel ganged up on. His brother who was with us, mentioned he got the vaccine because he thought it would be a preventative from him getting anyone else sick, probably wishing that would sway this brother that's waiting. And this guy that was waiting for data said he still doesn't smell or taste like he did before, and everything smells the same, and even tastes the same, nothing the way it use to before he got covid months before. I told him I'd heard that those that were long haulers that got the vaccine shot felt like their symptoms decreased. And he said, well if that'll happen he'll get the vaccine! So here's hoping he does!

I lost my sense of smell for about a week. I also experienced severe muscle aches and was exhausted. I received the Moderna vaccine in February and March. I was exhausted for about 48 hours after each dose and that was it. I hope people look at real data and not just cherry-picked anecdotal stories.

bsjkki Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 (edited) Interesting article about Israel’s fight against Delta. Officials are debating lockdown. Overall, their numbers seem small. https://www.timesofisrael.com/tv-14-israelis-who-got-3rd-shot-later-infected-with-covid-19/amp/?__twitter_impression=true *That’s 14 getting infected out of 420,000. The Nehor Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Vaccine trials for kids from toddler age to 11 years old are underway. It will take a while to complete. There are all kinds of ethical difficulties in child trials and children are much more likely to react differently based on age. A toddler and a 6 year old are very different and may react different compared even to the difference between a 16 year old and a 70 year old. 3
carbon dioxide Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I believe that a large number of the anti vaccine people will get vaccinated if lots of kids get hit hard with COVID. People tend to react differently when the kids are dropping like flies in comparison to old people. 1
