The Demise of Scouting

I agree!  They are over booked and over scheduled and giving them more to do isn't usually the answer.  I think we as a church needed to get better at worker smarter, not harder.

This is taught in conference, but so many don't hear it.

I was on the RS committee one year. In January we had a healthy theme. I suggested veggies and yummy dips for the refreshments. That wasn't liked too much by the leader. I teminded her of the conference talk about simplyfying. She kind of nodded and asked me to do the refreshments. Then the night of RS she also brought several plates of cookies.

No one trusts that simplyfying will be enough. I think of it like "you never get enough of what you don't need."  They can't trust it because so often we plan things we don't need and it isn't enough. If we plan to do what is needed people will feel fulfilled. Like you said -smarter, not harder.

I enjoyed the scouting program growing up in the church, but with all the current changes lately, I don't know if I want to put my son in the program when he is old enough, it's sad really.

You are so right.  It's like people know what they've been asked to do but they do not trust it so they give it lip service and then basically ignore it.  It's like the whole 'less meetings' mantra.  As a church we seem to thoroughly ignore that, with everyone thinking that the meetings they have are so obviously necessary that surely the church didn't mean to stop having those meetings.  I'm the YW's president so I have more meetings than many but it is not uncommon for me to be expected to attend 5 separate meetings on any given Sunday.  Sunday is normally my busiest and most stressful day.

But even 5 meetings on the Sabbath don't always seem like enough, just like you said.

If they are dropping the word 'boy' it's really weird that they are retaining BSA as part of their name.  What exactly does the B stand for?

This KUTV article says that the parent organization will still be called the Boy Scouts of America, but that the name change will simply apply to the 11-17 y/o scouting program.

Don't know why they would retain BSA in the name of that program, since it has meant Boy Scouts of America in the past.

Next in the news - Girl Scouts becomes Scouts GSA...

My understanding from what I read this morning (and I don't have a link at hand, sorry) is that the parent organization will still be Boy Scouts of America as a nod to the historical legacy, but that the brand will simply be Scouts.

It makes sense if you distinguish a corporate name from a brand name. At least to me it does.

Think FAIR (standing for foundation of apologetic and information research, if I recall correctly) and FairMormon (which stands for FairMormon). :P  It is all about tradition.🎻

This tact is not uncommon in branding a company or organization.  For example, we all know IBM.  But the original company was International Business Machines.  The name had little to do with what the company evolved to become.  So the original meaning of the letters became irrelevant.

BSA is a strong brand name worth keeping even thought it no longer has meaning to it's original name.  I wouldn't be surprised if Boy Scouts of America was completely dropped in a few years.

Hope that helps.

In answer to your question, the B no longer refers to anything.  BSA is simply the name of the parent company/organization.

Good analogy.

But I would say that the B does refer to something. It stands for "Boy" in Boy Scouts of America, a reference to its 100-plus year history as an organization for boys.

The article says that the parent organization will be called Boy Scouts of America and the program for kids 11-17 years old will be known as Scouts BSA.  Neither name implies that girls are now allowed (which is the stated reason for the change).  It's odd.

Well, I'm no spokesman or advocate for the organization. But I would venture a guess that "Scouts BSA" is a combination of the brand name (Scouts) and an abbreviation of the corporate or parent name (Boy Scouts of America). The sense I get is that they don't want to lose their connection with their 100-plus year history.

I changed my post slightly to clarify what I meant.  You are right. "Boy" does stand for something.  Just like the I in IBM still stands for something.  But few people remember what the reference is to.

Right.

Again, I think that's a good comparison.

Stroke of good luck! 😏

It was inevitable.

Girl Scouts are not happy, for good reason.

Interestingly, the girl scouts were thrown under the bus. So much for equality. However, as I said before on this thread the Muslim Girl Scouts of America is none to happy about this. They still will be separated from the boys and the Muslim Boys Scouts of America will be separated from the girls. The whole idea about the change is to open up possiblities for both sexes to join each other groups. What is to stop a boy joining the girls scouts? But the Muslim scouts will remain separate. What about mormon scouting?

How will the muslim scouts react to the change?

That’s interesting. As of now, GSA does not allow boys to join. Don’t know a out transgender. I don’t see anyone suing Muslim troops to integrate, but I do think LDS groups would be sued. Who knows?

Over on Reddit, some people who claim to have worked for the BSA are saying that there were talks in the 90s and 2000s with the Girls Scouts about unifying the organization so there would just be one "Scouts" group, which is how it's done in most other countries.  But apparently the sticking point was the massive amount of money the Girl Scouts make from cookie sales which they didn't want to have to share.  One person made the observation that the Girl Scouts has essentially turned into a giant pyramid scheme to sell cookies using child labor.

Based on my daughter's experience selling cookies where very little of the money was used for the local program, I can't say I have much evidence against the accusation.

In spite of an old and very good Girl Scout/Brownie tradition, Cub Scouting is no longer an activity for boys. Another important American cultural institution falls to progressive action. Perhaps it is now time for the Church and Scouting to permanently separate. As a life-long Scouter, I’m sad to see the program fail. Your thoughts?

http://www.thenewstribune.com/opinion/article209368169.html

Not Sad.

Glad to see it go.

Relishing in BSA's plummeting enrollment and donation numbers.

I give BSA 1 year, maybe 2 before it's no longer a part of the LDS Church.

Not to worry, their progressive corporate donors will no doubt provide the donations, membership numbers, volunteer hours and of course, solace.

It is all about money.

Scout executives routinely make over $200 and $300K, to say nothing of the Natl Scout Executive.

It's your typical money-hording, corrupt nonprofit

As someone who laughs at how everything is just going down the drain I have to ask, anyone ever wonder how this is affecting young men?  You keep taking away things that were theirs and well, only male oriented places they have left are ones that aren't so nice (Gangs, hate groups etc.)  Oh, and with gender bending i'm just waiting for more trans people to join the girl scouts.  Lets see how tolerant progressives are when they see trans girls selling cookies with their kids or using the same bathroom.  Just a little personal musing, contemporary parenting stateside is always a good chuckle for me.

Kinda related, does this mean the boyscouts will start selling cookies?  I remember selling popcorn, laaaaaame.

With you, I relish this.

The Popcorn and girl scout cookies give the actual local scout troop maybe 30% of the profits, so I'll stick to the bakery clearance rack myself.

If the church really does break its ties with Boy Scouts of America, I can see Pres. Nelson being the one to do it.

The church could then do its own program for young men at a lower cost.

MUCH lower cost, and with more parental responsibility I hope.
