John Dehlin Excommunication Discussion

Recommended Posts

He has a website.

I think I can refrain.  Sending additional clicks his way just seems self defeating for a TBM like me.  Besides I don't want the Danites to find that in my browser history.

The church response seems to cover the context nicely.

From the transcript:

BK:  Our association is very public. I appreciate our confidentiality in our discussions.

JD:  I appreciate it.

I don't know what he thinks he's getting out of putting those deceptively recorded words out on the internet. People will laud him, I guess. I read it and don't get anything out of it other than he continually wanted to make the discussion on that day in August about something the President did not. Now he wants to make the excommunication about something it was not.

he is exhausting and I feel bad for President King. Who wants some private conversation posted on a site that is frequented by people who are already antagonistic towards you? My goodness this is disappointing.

am i the only one who pauses at the sheer volume of he-said-she-said?

do you all seriously have time and energy to unravel the threads in this knot?  i get tired just thinking about it.

so you get a pass from me, john dehlin.  i am not willing to put forth the effort to try and figure out whether or not you're full of baloney.  for all i know you were excommunicated unjustly.  for all i know you were excommunicated justly, too.  this all means i won't spend much more time and energy in your story, so i win the internet today!

stemelbow is right: exhausting.

On the plus side President King now has greater empathy for Brigham Young than most mortals can conceive of.

I'm not seeing any of this news on Facebook, even among LDS and former LDS friends.  Even those who reside in areas covered by Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune.

That surprises me.

I think that he was excommunicated justly.  Now, whether the church should excommunicating people is another topic.

And, I agree.  It's exhausting.

I pray that we can now turn our attention away from Dehlin and focus on the real issues confronting us as a church and faith community.

it's hard for me to look away.

But I read the whole transcript from his meeting with King and Jensen that he put on his sight. I have no idea why he would post that. It does nothing for him. Nothing at all. It only possibly hurts King. Nothing else.

That's really disappointing.

Wow!  Just Wow!

By publishing a "transcript" of a private conversation with an ecclesiastical leader, and claiming it was the real reason he was excommunicated, he really is acting desperate to set the foundation for his post-LDS counseling business.

However, based on those same tactics, I would be hesitant to trust his confidentiality as a counselor, even if I did agree with his basic philosophies.

If I were his PhD adviser I'd be very concerned about ethical issues with certifying him as a professional counselor.

I have been thinking this for sometime.  I would love to know if his faculty advisers have said anything to him about it….not enough for him to review private conversaions though.   :)

Really?  I have friends who have posted FB links to the SLTrib and KSL.  It has been posted by  local publisher Signature Books on their FB page.  KSL is very popular too http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=33422568#cDIXTbYYAUkEVz02.01

Ordain Women sounds off about Dehlin's excommunication including a nice pic of him with Kate Kelly:

http://ordainwomen.org/johns-dehlin-announcement/

Ordain Women is deeply disappointed in the decision to excommunicate our friend and supporter, John Dehlin, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We have the utmost respect for John’s effort to create a space for church members with thoughtful questions and believe that his presence is a strength and help to our faith community. Debra Jenson, Ordain Women Executive Board Chair said, “We continue to be disconcerted by what appears to be an effort to silence members of the Mormon Church for asking questions and confronting difficult aspects of our faith. Our thoughts and prayers are with our brother, John, his wife Margi and his children, as well as the thousands of Mormons around the world who will be heartbroken to hear this news.” We look forward to a day when all members can speak freely about questions and concerns and we will continue to work toward that end.

Honoring our past,
Envisioning our future.

Who knows where the Church will be in 100 or 200 years?  Can we even imagine the possibility that the points of disagreement with Dehlin become accepted beliefs for LDS, and that his excommunication gets posthumously nullified?

you seriously expect the church to stop teaching the Book of Mormon is true or that Jesus is the Son of God?

Get with the narrative.  The real reason for the press conference was to reveal the conditions of the double secret probation for supporting gays and women.

sorry I am not illiterate.:)

oh well I hope this wakes him up. As well as his supporters who are deceiving themselves.

It's official.  Dehlin was ex'd for "telling the truth":

A meme on the internet...that's the gold standard of truth.

Why wouldn't the First Presidency and Apostles welcome ideas to keep members and families together?  Waiting for prophecies doesn't mean you cannot listen.

They are listening to the voice of he whose Church it is.

If the doctrine of Christ as Savior, and the Book of Mormon as scripture, is nullified I suspect we will have bigger issues than the membership status of a long dead John Dehlin.

Even if doctrines are changed to align with his personal beliefs, he would still need to repent of apostasy.  If you run ahead of the train because you think its too slow out of the station, you may have trouble hopping back on when it gets up to speed.  And if you miss the train, you have a long walk to the destination.

Here is one of my major concerns.  It seems that the only way to be a good latter-day saint is to always be on the slow train.

An enlightened saint would have been waiting for:

1)  The Utah territorial government to come to the conclusion that slavery was wrong.

2)  The German saints to become more antagonistic to the Nazis.

3)  The American saints to get on board with civil rights.

4)  The current Church to come around on OW and SSM.

It seems strange to me that, in a Church that stresses modern revelation, the ultimate test of loyalty is to be behind the times on the important issues of your day.
