Holy Ghost's Involvement In Your Marriage Partner

Recommended Posts

I had a question about something mentioned on page 97 of "Mine Errand from the Lord"

by Boyd K. Packer.

It says that it is unique to only the LDS Church that her members use the Holy Ghost

to guide them to the correct marriage partner. Does this imply that divorces are caused

when Satan leads one to find the wrong spouse?

Thanks,

Jim

I've always wondered this as far as choosing a partner.  I truly believe that God should direct us to our spouses.  I don't know if that is unique in Mormonism but I've always felt it was an advantage.

However, I don't think this is the cause of divorce (usually).  I think divorce comes because one or both partners are incapable in some way of working within that marriage.  That isn't always an issue of the wrong spouse, but an issue of a spouse who may be right not doing the right things.

I think blaming divorce on being led to "the wrong spouse" is a cop-out.

More like divorce is caused by not having the Holy Ghost seal his approval of a marriage.

Could you clarify that a little more, please? I've never heard anything like this before and it sounds very strange.

I've heard it more then once. Often I have to bite my tongue to avoid saying: "Yeah, but there are so many wrong spouses that God had to pair them off."

Wasn't there a time in Church history where some of the leaders were saying things like any two people can make a marriage work if they commit to the marriage?

That was more the theme that was taught to me when i was in YM.

Is it a little bit arrogant to feel that God picks out a special mate for you, that you are that important to God.  When I read these stories of God helping out in trivial things I often think of people who are or were in desperate circumstances.  Many years ago I lived near a LDS family of 8 or 9 kids.  Mother died during the last child birth, they were very humble and poor, living on a farm.  They all helped out and raised each other.  One daughter, about my age, who was a reporter for the Deseret News went on a boy scout trip to the Hole-In-The-Rock area South of Escalante, Utah as a reporter.  This was  a disastrous trip when the truck carrying the troop and the daughter, overturned and killed about 12 of them including the daughter.  Some injured screamed for help for hours till help arrived.  They were in an isolated area far from help.  Where was God then?

Scott Lloyd; know anything about it?

I think "the correct marriage partner" should be changed to " A correct marriage partner"

(I apologize at the outset for derailing the thread.)  I don't blame you for wondering why God permits what He does, or causes what He does.  I've wondered the same thing, many times.  In my limited, finite mind, I don't know precisely what Paul meant when he told the Romans, "[A]ll things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28).  I don't know precisely what the Lord means when He says, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9).  I don't know precisely what He means when He says that "all flesh is in mine hand" (see Doctrine & Covenants 61:6).  Like Job, I can only say, "The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord" (Job 1:21). Like Nephi, I can only say, "I know that [God] loveth His children; nevertheless, I know not the meaning of all things" 1 Nephi 11:17. Joseph Smith taught that all of our losses would be made up to us in the resurrection if we continue faithful.  As Father Cavanaugh told Daniel Ruettiger in the movie Rudy, "Son, in 35 years of religious study, I have only come up with two hard, incontrovertible facts: there is a God, and I'm not Him."

I wish you well. :)

We still have agency after we are married. There are no guarantees. Marriage is an effort and divine assistance in finding a spouse does not mean it will work out.

I'll admit I'm not exactly sure what Elder Packer means when he says that, but I will say that in my experience with Catholicism, we are taught to use spiritual discernment when selecting a spouse.  It sounds awfully similar to me to "using the Holy Ghost."

I love Pres. Kimball but his idea of any two Mormons can make a marriage is IMHO ree-diculous. It implies that Mormon Robot girl A and Mormon robot boy B can make it work and if not then Mormon robot girl C will do just as good. You NEED to be compatible and attracted to each other and have similar interest and goals and to me feel at peace when you are in their company. Divorce is a legal matter and you can't say you are divorced as if it's like a disease you have that you can't seem to shake and now it's become you. I don't know what to make about blessings I received prior to getting married and in the time since the divorce he hasn't answered any of my prayers about why I went through that awfulness and misery and so now I don't know what to make about other blessings I got-but that's beside the point!

Divorce is the usually the result of one marriage partner divorcing as a means to give up on the other one against the counsel of the Holy Ghost who wants them to stay together, or one marriage partner abusing the other with the other leaving because the Holy Ghost tells the abused one that separation is necessary in that situation.

Divorcing is not what people do when they love each other, ya know, and the Holy Ghost would rather help the married couple stay together by helping them find each other, even after they are married, as the best they can possibly be.

And then there is the fact that a marriage needs to be sealed by the power of the Holy Ghost othewise that marriage will end at death. And not because they could not have been nurtured by the Holy Ghost to get their marriage to that level, and stay with it, but because they refused to accept the help of the Holy Ghost to help them make it work out.

in other words you can't have a relationship with yourself, no matter how you feel about someone else if they don't want anything then it's doomed and it takes two hearts to make it work

Saturday's Warrior Pseudo Doctrine

I dunno but there has to be a kernel of truth to it otherwise you can blame God for not trying to set you up. If he asks you someday why you didn't get married can you say because you sent no one? My bro isn't interested in men or women but he has had opportunity for women and he just never took it, me on the other hand...

I admit I have no clue as to why God sets up men he knows would abuse their wife or do other despicable things and yet other people who wouldn't even think of doing those things he is like ah whatever about

I think that sometimes we can be so focused on receiving a revelation that we miss the obvious.

I heard this in a priesthood meeting when I was still active.

After a great storm, waters began to rise and the residents of a small town were forced to evacuate their homes. One man didn't leave his home in time and had to climb onto his roof to escape the rising flood waters. Not being able to swim, he prayed to God and asked to be saved. Soon a man in a boat came and offered a ride. The man refused saying, "I'm waiting for God to save me." A second boat arrived a short time later and the man refused again. Finally a helicopter descended and offered to help the man. Again the man refused because he was waiting for God to save him. The flood waters eventually consumed the man's house and the man drowned. Upon meeting God in the spirit world, the man asked Him, "Why didn't You save me?" God replied, "I sent you two boats and a helicopter, what more do you want?"

My point was that the married couple needs the Holy Ghost to be involved in the marriage if they want the marriage to be a "good" marriage and endure forever. Not just for the sealing, but in the whole marriage. It's not enough just to avoid getting a divorce.

I dont believe LDS have the monopoly on guidance by the Holy Ghost. That seems ridiculous. Everyone is born with yje Light of Christ which shows them all thingd they should do.
