Except that Joseph Smith and John Taylor both taught that they were.

Just so I'm clear, are you suggesting that every family was pre-organized, or just certain ones?

Well, I'd love to say I knew for certain, but there is a good bit of speculation involved.

All I know is both Joseph and John Taylor told people that they chose their family before they came here

"Joseph said I was his before I came here and he said all the Devils in hell should never get me from him." - Mary Rollins Lightner

Thou being willing and anxious to imitate them, waiting and desirous to obtain a body, a resurrection and exaltation also, and having obtained permission, madest a covenant with one of thy kindred spirits to be thy guardian angel while in mortality, also with two others, male and female spirits, that thou wouldst come and take a tabernacle through their lineage, and become one of their offspring.  You also chose a kindred spirit whom you loved in the spirit world to be your head, stay, husband and protector on the earth and to exalt you in eternal worlds.  All these were arranged, likewise the spirits that should tabernacle through your lineage. - John Taylor

Also the Brigham Young vision of Joseph also would apply:

"Be sure to tell the people to keep the Spirit of the Lord; and if they will, they will find themselves just as they were organized by our Father in Heaven before they came into the world. Our Father in Heaven organized the human family, but they are all disorganized and in great confusion." - Brigham Young Vision of Joseph Smith

So do we know for sure, no.  But I'll go with this as a pretty good indicator, especially since there really hasn't been teaching to the contrary.

But, how reliable is that statement?  I think John Taylor and Brigham Young and many others made a lot of statements that are not worth the paper they're written on.

They said a lot of things that only applied to the people they were saing it to....

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, has said, “I don’t believe there is only one right person for you. I think I fell in love with my wife, Harriet, from the first moment I saw her. Nevertheless, … I don’t believe she was my one chance at happiness in this life, nor was I hers. …… Once you commit to being married, your spouse becomes your soul mate, and it is your duty and responsibility to work every day to keep it that way” (“The Reflection in the Water” [Church Educational System fireside for young adults, Nov. 1, 2009]).
