smac97 Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 A new trailer for the "Witnesses" film has been released. See here. It's actually a very good trailer, with one glaringly "off" sound effect (you'll know it when you hear it) that I hope they fix befor the release of the film in October. Otherwise, however, the production values and acting look like they will be pretty good. I have long felt that critics and investigators, and even members, do not fully realize the import of the statements of the Witnesses. This film will hopefully prompt interested parties to examine and discuss that issue. Any thoughts about the trailer? Thanks, -Smac 3

Yup, that one punch is like something out of an old Kung-Fu film! Still, the movie looks like it has extremely high production values.

bluebell Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 It looks good (and yes, that one sound effect was really bad).
Ahab Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 Pro: Good quality cinematography, I like that I don't recognize any of the actors from anything else, high expectation that the content will reflect what we believe about them and what really happened Con: no closed captioning. I hope the film will have it and that it will be good quality too.
Duncan Posted February 28, 2020 Posted February 28, 2020 It cut off at the lady speaking!!!! and one of the witnesses was in Singles Ward and that doofus with the glasses, I forget his name

pogi Posted February 29, 2020 Posted February 29, 2020 Looks pretty good, but maybe a little over-acted.
Genealogy Posted February 29, 2020 Posted February 29, 2020 The punching sound effect has now been changed. It sounds more realistic now. The film is still in the initial rough stages and far from the polished finished product, but here are some continuity, and other issues that are being reported from the short trailer: -If you watch from 1:02 to 1:05 you can clearly see the wireless microphone and wires hanging from the back of Martin Harris (guy in the red shirt kneeling). -The bag containing the Plates, look at about 22 seconds in (after they're knocked from the actor's arms). The Plates are clearly exposed and you can see a ring. Now check how the Plates/bag look at about 33-34 seconds as Joseph tries to reach for them. You see a bag, but not the Plates. At 35 seconds in, we see the exposed Plates again. At 36 seconds, Joseph grabs the bag and pulls it toward him. You don't see the Plates. Then we see the exposed Plates again at 36-37 seconds. -The Plates at 1:30 are clearly different than the ones earlier in the trailer. I have to say that the brown tape does not look professional. During the fighting, the Plates had a “sealed” part on the bottom that is nothing more than brown duct tape wrapped around the bottom third, but later in the clip the Plates are fully shown from the same angle, are much bigger, and there are unsealed Plates all the way down? No continuity. -Having Joseph use the sacred Golden Plates as a weapon to beat his attacker is not historical and certainly not something one would have expected Joseph to do. What about using his fists, a stick or a rock. Joseph was supposed to protect the Plates with his life and the Plates would probably not be the first thing he would use as a weapon to bash someone over the head with. -Susan Easton Black, considering her status as emeritus professor of Church history--states that critics have resorted to saying that the witnesses saw the plates with their "spiritual eyes." The implication, of course, is that the critics invented this from thin air. Not so; Martin Harris said this point-blank and critics are merely quoting what Martin said.

blueglass Posted March 1, 2020 Posted March 1, 2020 (edited) Here is a link to David Whitmers deseret news interview from 13-Aug 1878, where he described his vision of the sword of Laban, directors, plates on the table, etc. He explains that the angel buried the plates in a cave until "God will yet rise up a mighty one" https://m.imgur.com/fgvwjDe I think it's pretty cool that the jaredites were giants Edited March 1, 2020 by blueglass 2

From what I’d heard about this before I was expecting something catering to a more apologetic interested audience, but with Ann Taves and John Turner involved, I’m definitely looking forward to watching it now.

Thanks, -Smac One thing that is kind of unreal about these church videos of past events is that every character looks like they are wearing clothes that they just bought or were just made. To be more realistic they should dirty them up a bit or at least make them look like they have been worn for a while. A small peeve. 2

Added: looking at the picture Dan provides below, the fabric looks not that fresh. No sizing or something. Looks comfortable. Edited March 1, 2020 by Calm

Having finally watched the video, I find that you left out most of what Black was saying, resulting in a very poor representation of her comment, imo. It was not the "spiritual eyes" quote she was calling into doubt, but the interpretations of critics as to what that meant. At about 2:30... Black: Quote Critics today are starting to say that it was just quote “spiritual eyes” and that they really didn't see anything and perhaps they even hallucinated about it. I was about to debunk the wireless microphone thing (I read Daniel Peterson’s blog post last night saying that a boom mic, not a wireless mic was used). But I see that Dan has already done so on this thread. Regarding Martin Harris beholding the plates with his “spiritual eyes,” this has been dealt with at length elsewhere and the criticism shown to be pretty much groundless. Rather than recap it here, I will simply link to the treatment on FairMormon: https://www.fairmormon.org/answers/Book_of_Mormon/Witnesses/"Eye_of_Faith"_and_"Spiritual_Eye"_statements_by_Martin_Harris#Question:_Did_Martin_Harris_tell_people_that_he_did_not_see_the_plates_with_his_natural_eyes.2C_but_rather_the_.22eye_of_faith.22.3F Edited March 1, 2020 by Scott Lloyd
