If you think that just because you avoid alcohol, tea, coffee and tobacco you are keeping the WoW I would say you are sadly mistaken.  It is not about what to avoid but how to use it.  Example:  I recently had an epidural to inject cortisone into my back.  The instructions were that if I developed headaches because of it to use caffeinated drinks for a few days.  My choices would be tea, coffee or caffeinated soda drinks.  Now which would be better a cup of coffee or caffeinated soft drinks?  The soft drinks contain lots of sugar and carbonation, the coffee does not.

I keep it around for ritual taboo breaking purposes, so unless it's part of a ritual, I stick to how it's traditionally practiced. This way it keeps the transgression meaningful every time I do it.

My choice would be NoDoze with lots of water.

That would probably work too.  My point being that for most things there is a legitimate use and like tobacco they should be used with judgement and skill.

OH by the way I did not develop headaches so I did not have to make the choice.

Some people appear to believe one can only get caffeine either by drinking coffee or having to deal with the excesses of soda. Just offering another option that gives you want you need and no more, is much more convenient to keep around and less likely to be abused as there is nothing tasty about it and without having to concern oneself if it technically breaks the WoW even if medical need allows for it so people don't have feel forced to choose between two evils.

Coffee and tea have been purported to help with Alzheimer's, back in my TBM days I called the church office building and asked about drinking green tea, the fellow they transferred me to said only that he knew of some that do for medicinal purposes and that it's ok with a doctor's care. So there ya go.

Do you have financial or other oblgations to a former spouse or children? If yes, are you current in meeting those obligations?

I'd like to see the poll on that one!

To me the question is whether we want to get by with the minimum required or embrace the counsel in D&C 89 for the treasure it is. I’ve been gathering stories of Latter-day Saints who are realizing great blessings by trying to more fully understand and follow D&C 89 (see posts at http://discoveringthewordofwisdom.com). Like them, I’ve been astonished by how much wisdom is in this section of scripture and how blessed we can be by following it. The dietary counsel (wholesome plants, meat sparingly and only in times of need, and making grains the staff of life) is definitely for our time as it directly addresses the health issues of our day: heart disease, diabetes, obesity, strokes, etc.

Why settle for the minimum amount of blessings?

Sadly, many non-LDS are far ahead of Mormons in understanding the living by the Word of Wisdom!

Welcome to the board!  Great idea to gather these stories, I look forward to read them and would love to read your book.  Are you familiar with T. Colllin Campbell and the China study?  It is the most comprehensive study on nutrition ever performed and the "grand prix of epidemiology" and it recommends, along with your book (and the WoW consequently) the whole food, plant based diet. If only I didn't like meat so much.  I go through phases, but haven't been able to commit completely (or even sparingly) yet.

I have to smile at something here..My father would not let us have coke when we were younger..nor cherry coke..or pepsi..but Dr. Pepper and Tab were okay.  Obviously we didn't know about a lot of things years ago....but our refrigerator bottom was full of Dr. Pepper!  What about chocolate??  I love postum..can't find it...but I think that was okay.  But no..I do everything with moderation. I am a gym rat!

I'd never heard that expression till now!  My daughter and son-in-law are gym rats!  They would choose it over any other activity practically, wish I was a gym rat!

Thanks for the welcome, pogo! Yes, I LOVE The China Study. In my opinion, it is a "must read" for anyone wanting to understand the Word of Wisdom. In this article I wrote for VegSource, I suggest The China Study is like the Book of Mormon in being a great "missionary" tool: http://www.vegsource.com/news/2014/06/the-mormon-word-of-wisdom-an-1833-guide-to-a-whole-food-plant-based-diet.html.%C2'>

Yes! Thanks for the correction, Rain! Would that there were many more. There are such treasures in D&C 89, and yet we are still debating whether it is OK to drink caffeinated drinks or not. Does anyone doubt that Coke is not a health food?

Why would we want to routinely subject our bodies to unhealthful foods when we have been taught that our bodies are to be temples of God? How could even the most delicious junk foods compare in value to enjoying good health (not to mention the spiritual blessings of the Word of Wisdom)?

It's hard to obey the word of wisdom well when it is the day after Halloween and didn't have as many trick or treaters as we anticipated. Too much extra delicious candy.

Buy candy you don't like but kids do. Then throw it away when the halloweenies have all gone home. The money you spent was worth giving it out, but not worth it for the exercise you will have to do if you eat it.

If you live in the Wasatch Front area and the candy is not specific to Halloween or fall you can donate it to Festival of Trees to use in many of the items sold there. 100% of everything sold goes to Primary Children's Hospital. Let me know and I can put you in contact with a board member near you.

I decided I will start drinking beer sparingly when I start eating meat sparingly :)

That means an O'douls or Kaliber to me.
