The second wave of hymns to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ global hymn book has been added with nine new additions.

The new additions include songs familiar with other Christian faiths such as “Amazing Grace.” The new hymns also include original Latter-day Saint hymns including “This Is the Christ” written in 1995 with lyrics by First Presidency member James E. Faust and Jan Pinborough.

A full list of the nine new additions to the “Hymns – For Home and Church” collection:

  • “Amazing Grace”
  • “Holding Hands Around the World”
  • “Anytime, Anywhere”
  • “God’s Gracious Love”
  • “My Shepherd Will Supply My Need”
  • “Oh, the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus”
  • “Behold the Wounds in Jesus’ Hands”
  • “This Is the Christ”
  • “Come, Lord Jesus”

And yet, there are still some folks who dispute that the Latter-day Saints are "Christian."

Thanks,

Well, I did say on here that if they put this song in the songbook I would go back to church, so hmmm.

Good to know, I love that two great songs that were left out formerly are on the docket or in the songbook already. It will be cool, I'm assuming the Tabernacle Choir will sing it during general conferences.

Church will be rolling them out in chunks for a bit.

Includes Amazing Grace with three verses (John Newton's version, not Chis Tomlin's).

My local stake choir just performed (a much more ambitious version of) the first one, #1001 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, for stake conference last Sunday.  It is really pretty and I still like it, despite blasting out my hearing performing (a much more ambitious version of) it.  🙂

Still being too new to edit my posts, I apologize for this second post, but I wanted to add that I really appreciate how the website includes so much learning material for the hymns.  There is sheet music, an accompaniment track, and an accompaniment-and-vocal track, making learning the hymns incredibly accessible.

I have always been impressed by the Church’s music section on their website.

If only they would put a ward library section on the site (preferably a list of all church distribution materials ever issued that are acceptable to have in the ward library) that can be downloaded and then edited by ward librarians to create an inventory of their items, pereferably something that can be placed on a ward’s website…including scripture verses the materials can be used for (would be nice if lessons too, but those can change over time, so I would be oh so satisfied with scripture verses).  Some of the old style pictures are beautiful and they should be used imo if the ward still has them, but they usually aren’t touched as not referenced in current manuals and if there is no easily accessible inventory listing, who would ever ask for them?

Can you tell I was a ward librarian for many years?  And it’s time for my yearly vent on the subject….

So happy to see this wonderful song included.  I hope they don't mess with the word "wretch".

Mosiah 4:11: "I would that ye should remember, and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long-suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come, which was spoken by the mouth of the angel."

"Wretch" isn't out of bounds.  We are all flawed.  And yet, we are also "children of the most High" (Psalm 82:6) and "joint-heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:17).  Faith in and acceptance of Jesus Christ is the bridge.

Thanks,

We were singing it this week and my 5 year old daughter spaz declared it her favorite song. She was singing along, though definitely making up or ignoring the words. 😅

It's been fun to see the roll out.

I love hymns. They are beautiful love to sing them in church. But i love Psalms more. Why don't we also sing Psalms in the church actually? The melodies are so good.

We might consider the times in which it was sung and what the church was trying to accomplish before passing judgement on those good Saints.

Music tastes are such personal things.

I don’t see any Polish Koledy in the book yet…some of the most beautiful carols. Give it a listen while you are typing.

I hope they have included this most gorgeous Christmas song….

Vaughan Williams was not from the US nor was he from the LDS church though. What has he to do with any hymns?

Now you’re judging me.
Consider the context of the conversation, please.

YES !, Amazing Grace will now be "IN The LDS Mansion Kingdom Houses " !.

It wasn’t that long ago the amazing Grace was actually **not** permitted by local authorities.

I had a bishop that forbid a sister from singing it as a musical number in sacrament meeting.  She did anyway and he kept going on about how it ruined the spirit of the meeting.  He was a really wonderful man but I think his attitude was typical on how a lot of members viewed Amazing Grace.

I'm so glad it's in our hymnal now!

I said “we,”not “you”. There are a number of things they did that may seem odd to us if we do not understand their intentions. In this case, the Church was trying to lift up the importance of  Word of Wisdom revelation by concentrating efforts on children because efforts with adults failed.

Happy Sunday, Brother Dario!  There is an LDS hymn that has been set to a famous melody that Williams used in one of his pieces.  The hymn is “If You Could Hie to Kolob”.  The hymn is a beautiful presentation of the expansive cosmology of LDS doctrine.  You can read about it here.  And you can listen to it here.
