Discovery of Photograph of Joseph Smith?

I am not a 100 percenter on the photo.  Give the scholars and historians and whoever time to continue the assessment and review.  Just like President Hinckley was content to allow more experts to investigate the provenance of Mark Hoffman's dubious works.  As it was, the investors put more pressure on Hoffman than did the scholars.  I do like the photo though.

But you are describing the person in the photo with a lot of personality that just happens to parallel your opinion of Joseph’s character, correct?

His whole life was AWESOME from beginning to end.  He died sealing his testimony of Christ's Restored Church.  In between he went through so many incredible challenges.  If he was a fraud, he would have quit long before April 6, 1830.

He survived an attempted poisoning that dislocated his jaw.  Which he reset on his own.  Thousands of experiences just incredible.

Exactly my thoughts.  A couple of people on this thread expressed their opinion that the picture was too old for a 38 year old guy.  All that does is point to the ruggedness and the heavy rigor of his life.  His dedication and his steadfastness and his faithfulness!  A true soldier and prophet.  Like Elijah.

Your'e just being a sourpuss.  I am very grateful for JS' life and mission.  And very privileged to be part of the Restored Church!

Well you certainly have a case of hero worship and have created quite the myth for yourself.  Praise to the man.....🙄

But be careful. It does hurt when you finally realize your myth does not really measure up to your expectations.

I remain unconvinced.

The subject of the photo looks older than 38 — by as much as 10 years. The death mask, on the other hand looks about right for that age.

It was common for women to wear lockets back then.

I agree. Even if the paintings of JS are not totally accurate they are so different from this pic and I don't see it from the death mask especially the nose, mouth and chin.

There are so many ways of making assessments.  Women's intuition, what does it tell you.  Understanding of history in various time periods.  How they differ from our time.  We can tell a great deal from seeing the countenance of every person.  The scriptures has many references to countenance.  There is an extensive spectrum of observations we can make.  I stand by my statements, personal knowledge, life experience, etc.  Sometimes just plumb personal opinion.

Nice.

Hmmm. Maybe I retract what I just posted. The overlay of the death mask is pretty convincing.

Please don't mind this meme, just saw it and had to share because I wonder if the artist that painted this was in Joseph's life, I think the likeness is incredible.

May be an image of 2 people and text

I believe this was reasonably confirmed as a cabinet secretary in some US presidency of the time. Some dude named Stuart. Helped by the fact that the name “Stuart” is carved in the bottom-right corner.

This is a modern painter. Iirc, Liz Swinton Swindle…but could be David Lindsey (whose house had a massive studio I would have loved to buy and put a trampoline in it, but the rest of the house was cramped).  Need to check the names, but both were becoming popular when I worked at the bookstore, so I get them mixed up.

added:  it is Lindsey

Liz Swinton Swindle visited my former ward years ago for a Relief Society night. She does a good job. Thanks for the help, I wonder what he used to be able to show a good likeness. I'll do some research and hopefully come up with something. I love your comment about the trampoline, that made me giggle!! My husband's parents put a whole swing set in their unfinished basement, a 1500 square foot rambler that my husband and his siblings played on, lol!

I tried to find something about it, but couldn’t. Maybe will try again later.

I did too, but didn't find anything.

Here's an interesting site, someone that's been researching or searching for Joseph Smith's likeness or actual photo for awhile. He believes the latest daguerreotype is probably Joseph Smith. https://www.knowbrotherjoseph.com/scannel

Here's the first known daguerreotype of Joseph, I think: https://www.knowbrotherjoseph.com/scannel

It isn't the first known daguerreotype.  It was one of the first ones that came forward but it hasn't been proven that it is Joseph.  There is, currently, no known photograph (daguerreotype or otherwise) of Joseph.

You're right, I've been constantly editing as I go along, I am a trigger poster sadly.

I hope I made it all better now, haha. Thanks for your help, as always I so appreciate the kind way you go about it.

From the Trib: ‘Mormon Land’: Historian explains why he is convinced the Joseph Smith photo is for real

Quote

Historians with the Community of Christ (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) recently made a stunning announcement: Daniel Larsen, a descendant of Mormonism’s founder, Joseph Smith, had discovered the only known daguerreotype of his famous ancestor in a locket passed down in the Smith family.

The emerging image was startling to many, who know Smith only from a portrait that was painted of him in 1842, and the photo appeared distinctly different from that.

The finding led to a nationwide conversation among members of the larger, Utah-based, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and those in the Community of Christ, which was launched in the 1860s by the founder’s family.

Viewers were asking: How do they know it is really him?

Lachlan Mackay, a Community of Christ apostle who directs that church’s historic sites in Nauvoo, Ill., and another descendant of Smith, helped analyze the locket, trace its ownership, and research the daguerreotype’s likely history.

On this week’s show, Mackay answer questions about the photo, the process historians used to authenticate it and why is convinced it is an image of Joseph Smith.

Listen here:

Thanks,

-Smac

I used it for the side by side and only after did I read what it said, but it's not that terrible, haha.

It depends on if you consider Tinder a dating app or a hookup app.  Early on I understood it to be a hookup app.  Now I think of it as a combination. I've never used it, just read about it from people who have. Then if you think about the polygamy aspects of it...

Personally, I understood the joke to be about  putting your best look out there even though I like the real picture better than the painting, but I understand how all the connotations might hit someone.

That's how I thought of it, putting your best look out there.

I wasn't convinced by just eyeballing the mask and the dag. It felt off. But I realize now that it was because the mask overlay needed to be flipped horizontally. Its a pretty good fit

I look at these overlays as useless, it's like putting on a balaclava, it'll fit on anyone head's-easily manipulated
