I look at these overlays as useless, it's like putting on a balaclava, it'll fit on anyone head's-easily manipulated

Exactly!

It would be an interesting experiment to get a random sample of images of males of British descent around the right age, overlay the death mask, and see how many were "close".

Two eyes, a nose and mouth. ;)

Most folks have those. ;)

As always, it is a matter of how you "see" it.  Rabbit or duck? ;)

What difference does it make?

More bucks when he sells the locket, I suppose!

I had to look up balaclava, but I agree with you. The overlay did not impress me any more than the photograph did in its initial form.

Incidentally, I’m not saying this makes it right, but there are some smart people who remain skeptical on this, including Richard Bushman, Bill Slaughter (photo archivist with the Church History Department) and Ardis Parshal (prominent free-lance blogger on Church history subjects).

I agree with most of your post, but I have to say I’ve been personally and professionally acquainted with both Lach Mackay and Ron Romig for years.   They strike me as men of integrity and neither seems the type to be pursuing mercenary interests in this thing.

I understand that Mackay, when initially shown the photograph, said, “That’s not Joseph.” He took some convincing.

One eye is looking in a different direction to the others, or else his eye is swollen and covering it

One of my eyes looks like that.  In most photos it appears that one of my eyes is looking off to the side a bit.  In my case the asymmetry is in the tissue around that eye, not in the actual direction the eyes are looking.
