Human remains found at Chad Daybell's property after search warrant served, police say

By Nate Eaton and Eric Grossarth, EastIdahoNews.com | UPDATED - Jun. 9, 2020 at 1:50 p.m. | Posted - Jun. 9, 2020 at 9:28 a.m.

UPDATE: Unidentified human remains have been found on the property of Chad Daybell in Salem, Idaho, according to police. He was taken into custody earlier Tuesday morning after police served a search warrant at his property.

This story will be updated.

SALEM, Idaho — Chad Daybell has been taken into custody.

Multiple witnesses tell EastIdahoNews.com they saw several officers pull him over about one mile south of the Daybell home in the 4000 block of 1900 East around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. He was wearing a baseball cap, gray button-up shirt and blue jeans. Witnesses say he got out of his silver SUV, was placed in handcuffs and put into a police car.

A terrible, but not unanticipated, development.

I thought their bodies would be in Yellowstone, never to be found.

This whole thing makes my heart sink to think about.

I can’t believe this happened and I was oblivious all day when I have been checking the news every couple of hours for months.

I am so grateful there is solid evidence and this didn’t go on and on without certainty for the families on what happened...even if knowing is making the heartbreak unbearable for a time.

I did get some major ‘spring cleaning’ done today though...but didn’t even look at the threads title but just was working through the newest threads so assumed no one had posted.  Not sure I want to go read websleuths.

Time to mourn.

Dang, everyone is asleep so no one to talk to about it. What a weird feeling after investing so much attention since December in this family’s personal lives.

Oh man, his poor kids. Poor Colby though he wasn’t in denial.

After 13 long hours today of work, it's time to get some sleep for another busy day tomorrow as we expect to get more details relating to Chad Daybell's arrest. We still have no confirmation on what was found today other than human remains. #WhereAreTheKids?

Reporter Jason Nguyen asked Mayor Jerry Merrill, “How do you feel about the community responding to the news right now?”

Mayor Merrill responded with:

“Well, it is a sad day for Rexburg, you know, of course, to find out the news about the kids. But on the other hand, it’s a good day in the sense that it is good to try to bring some closure to the family and to this story. You know, that has been dragged out for so long and so we are glad to have that closure. But it is a very sad day for the people who knew those kids, you know, that loved them and cared about them. So there is nothing to celebrate.”

When asked with the follow-up question, “Are you indicating they found the kids?” The Mayor’s reply was, “Oh.”

Whether he realized he had let slip a preliminary finding or he was just assuming, haven’t seen anything yet.

Bet the medical examiners are working all night on this.

The clip of the mayor is about halfway through the report, his face and the way he says “oh” and the fact that they don’t share what he said after (I looked at a FB version so may be different) implies to me he heard it was the kids and slipped.

The reporter checked with the grandparents and they gave permission to air the interview.

Daybell was an idiot if he truly wanted to sell the house after Tammy died...unless the bodies were moved there later.  Someone suggested on WS he probably buried them while Tammy was visiting her parents in Utah at his suggestion.  But he had a son and his family living there as well. Wonder about his explanation or if he talked them into going somewhere as well.

From the air, the grave didn’t look that deep, but he had been a gravedigger, so assume he was familiar with how deep it should be, but also ground settling.  I guess this means he really did believe his own fantasy about an earthquake or other stuff distracting the world from paying any attention to them (as told by Lori).

Added:Reddit has Daybell telling Tammy he buried a raccoon. Will wait for this to be confirmed because it is Park who interviewed Rowe and if Rowe is the source...

Julie Rowe’s FB is disgusting. She knew all along but hoped otherwise because she was having nightmares.  And she hates those awful media interviews but must do them to fight the darkness. (Btw I have another one with Nancy Grace coming up, giggle giggle). [my paraphrase]

AVOW owner Christopher Parrott (not sure of spelling) isn’t ready to thrown in the towel (rumor is that Chad has been staying at his very nice home for part of the the time).

Finally CP posted an update himself saying all discussion is to cease and will not be allowed unless and until Chad has had a chance to go through the court system and tell his own side of the story. CP still supports CD (against all reason) and in running to his defense has claimed:

1) The previous owner of the property used to own and butcher animals regularly there, and so of course there's going to be bones found on the property.

2) If the bones found do happen to be human bones then the media is going to try and spin it to be those of the children.

Once identity is confirmed, guessing it will be whatever villain snuck on the property and buried them without Daybell or his family knowing as part of the setup.

I haven't read Julie Rowe yet, but its typical julie to ignore or forget what she's said before. She craves attention, I think it's pathological.  She has to maintain her prophetess status to her followers, who accept this act of hers.

They used cadaver dogs, specifically trained to only respond to human remains, so I doubt it could be animal. Maybe old pioneer or indians remains is a slim possibility; to give Chad a little bit of benefit of doubt, at this point. I read in comments that police went back with a dog when the ground warmed up.  Does anyone remember,  but back in December when they searched his home, I thought there was a dog that indicated for possible remains,  but not sure.

But, they've got chad on concealing and destroying evidence which is a felony.  I hope he'll finally start talking, this has been a horrible ordeal for their families.  I wonder though about Chad's children who may have known incriminating stuff, keeping it from police all this time. If any were aiding and abetting him in hiding evidence of a killing,  I  think they should bring charges against them as well.

My understanding was the warrant at that time didn't cover that. I might check later. Still no sleep.

Just watched the clip of the mayor, and yea, there's no question the mayor is saying they've found one or both the children's remains, all that talk about closure too.  His face, when he realizes he let it slip, is obvious.  Now I guess we still wait for  the medical examiner's confirmation.

I'm guessing they will pin it on Alex Cox (since he can't defend himself) and try to plead to illegal burial or something like that. I gave up hope for them being alive a long time ago but this still is a shock. 😢

Do any of his children still live with him? So little has been said about them that I wonder if they are all grown and living on their own.

I went to look at  the Reddit comment you mentioned (it's on r/LoriVallow subreddit and it's titled 'concerned lds member; I'd link to it, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to.)  and found something else interesting on that page.  It is a letter a member wrote  about the efforts of people like Chad and Lori, who are going around in their ward/stake trying to get other members involved in these 'cultish' groups.  This person said they had talked to their church leaders but were told to just ignore them.  I wish they had not blacked out the name of the stake, I think these things need to be made public so that members can protect themselves and they aren't so easily swept under a rug.  These deaths and disappearances happended because of Lori and Chad's strange beliefs, that they have been recruiting unknowing members to join them.

I think Christopher Parret and others at AVOW are still heavily involved in this fringe group that operates within the church, and that's why he's circling the wagons and trying to keep prying eyes out (Onsdag over on websleuths managed to find out some information but he said that Parret keeps the discussion on this to only a loyal following in a private forum.  Just like Hector Sosa was doing on his PTZ private forum, which he disbanded a little while ago over fears that they would be exposed for their activities.

I hope some of the church leadership are investigating this and will recognize it must be addressed and dealt with.

'Remains are of children.' One case of concealment had 'aggravating factors.' From the prosecutor.  Sad.
