Just as with all the church sites it will take time and money and we don't have knowledge of everyone's background so we shouldn't judge their faithfulness on this alone. Oh, I'm not saying that it will parse out that way immediately: they've made mention that it will be hard (and if critics buy up lots of the more likely urls and try to run up the cost, it could even become impossible). I'm just saying that it is clear to me that every faithful member will be looking, planning, trying to do it. And at some point it may become an easy way to see to differentiate.

Avatar4321 Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 I will have to revisit the talk but it does sound like it would be wise to change the name. Unless we are talking especially the only Book of Mormon debate and discussion

If we’re taking President Nelson literally and seriously at his words (which he did state quite unequivocally), he described this change as a “correction.” If something needs to be corrected, that implies that it was wrong before. Were President Hinckley and the rest of the 12 who supported him wrong for launching the “I’m a Mormon” campaign, and Mormon.org (among many other groups, initiatives, etc...)? Did those leaders unwittingly support Satan in detracting from the focus on our Savior Jesus Christ and instead using a moniker unauthorized by God? 3
Jeanne Posted October 7, 2018 Posted October 7, 2018 Whatever happens....please let those of us who are not members know what is allowed. Thanks!
jpv Posted October 8, 2018 Posted October 8, 2018 FYI, doing this will let exmos (are we still allowed to call them that) control the narrative and own the search results when people search about "Mormons."

Jim I don’t portray them that way. President Nelson indicated that using the term Mormon was incorrect, and that doing so aided Satan. I disagree with him, but I want to be humble, and have someone who supports 100% of what Elder Nelson says to me to show me how they reconcile his heavy criticism of 150+ years of LDS leaders using the term Mormon to describe this faith. 3

We are not heavily criticizing past leaders. The world knew us very well as the Mormon church and Church leaders went with that to further the missionary work of the church. Now that the church is more well known in the world asking to be called by the original name is not going to be too much to ask, so if it is going to happen, now is a good time. 4

There was even a major ad campaign a few years back called "I am a Mormon". And now all of a sudden we are offending God and racking up a win for Satan when we use the term.

I think it is a case of good, better, best. If we are now capable of "best", but refuse to act on it and are content with "good", then we are not seeking the Lord as fully as we might. I have not had a witness it aids Satan at this time, so I can't explain why he went there. I do think the ability to communicate so quickly and provide supports as opposed to an occasional letter or directive we might miss hearing read in Church and having so much of our resources now digital and available in many languages allows us to act together as a global community as well as makes it easier for nonmembers to learn the distinction and why the change (for example, they may search on the Church's name and be forwarded from Mormon.org to Become.org without being aware of the change, which then automatically provides them with the chance...impossible before with things in print). Because of this increased speed and depth of communication within and outside the Church, I believe now it is possible to have a great enough impact to affect a change where in the past there just wasn't the ability to build momentum or waste resources or connections by making changes. Perhaps we could look on the aiding Satan aspect in terms of piloting a ship. As one leaves the port and travels on, small variations in direction aren't that problematic as they can be corrected without much waste of distance travel, especially if movement is relatively slow. But if speed builds or we near our destination, being off course requires more backtracking, so what wasn't something essential to pay attention to has changed to a high priority. As we come closer, if we go off course, we are no longer heading in the general direction, but moving away from our destination. Edited October 8, 2018 by Calm 2

There was even a major ad campaign a few years back called "I am a Mormon". And now all of a sudden we are offending God and racking up a win for Satan when we use the term. I cannot remember the wording the prophet used, but the gist of it was misguided or possibly being too lackadaisical in allowing others to name us - and we forgot the value of the true name of the Church and we tolerated it. I can understand how Satan would enjoy this action and even encourage it. I did not get a sense that he was condemning his fellow prophets and apostles, but he certainly corrected this tolerance of that which offends God. It is a big shift for us. We have not only tolerated this nickname, but we have embraced it. I expect that all of the previous prophets would actually support this decision were they available to voice their feelings. I agree that we should be more focused on being disciples of Jesus Christ in both word and deed.
Calm Posted October 8, 2018 Posted October 8, 2018 (edited) Wandering thoughts..... In my youth (12 and younger), I was called a nickname that as I grew it felt wrong to me (it felt childish and girly, like having to wear a lacy dress when I wanted to be in jeans...I still hate lace and wear skirts only to church). However, it wasn't until I was older than 8 that I apparently had the nerve to push my preference enough that my parents changed, while it took even longer to get grandparents and great aunts to call me by my preferred name. One great aunt never changed even after I was married. I don't think it was cowardly when I was a younger kid to feel my parents had the right to choose my name or that it was impolite for me to correct my grandparents, but as I grew older if I had continued in that vein when I could easily communicate my wishes and explain them, I believe it could have had a significant impact on my sense of self. I probably would have alternated between being resentful and resigned (there were some habits of perception of me my dad and mom could never shake, so I know I really, really, really don't like being put in a box that doesn't fit). I feel like the Church is now in this position, having the ability to civilly and effectively choose what it wants to be called and act on it, even if it may take a long time for others to get used to it and some never will. I had a chance to contrast my own experience with what might have been when my grandmother told me she had once asked her mother to call her by her middle name, Rachel, because she didn't like being called Gertie (she was the opposite of me, she wanted a more feminine, pretty name). Her mother was apparently deeply offended and refused to allow it. So she was called Gertie to her dying day because she won't go against her mother's wishes and when she shared this story, it was with pride in her mother's forcefulness, but also a sad sense of loss. I wonder how much having that name (Gertrude means strong spear, implying principled fighter) and it being imposed upon her contributed to her own need to be accepted as always right and having a rather rigid and unforgiving approach to the world (though there was never anyone who tried harder to help and be there for people, she had a bitter streak and held on to what she saw as betrayals, even with close friends and she saw that as a superior moral/principled stance). I wonder if what she was daily called had a softer sound to it, she might have viewed the world as something more to have joy in rather than everything being a duty. So for me, President Nelson urging us to choose the name that best illustrates what we want to become rather than just coasting along out of tradition and not to make others feel awkward has rather a personal twist for me. I think names have a big impact on self perception, like the clothes we put on. Nowadays in the States at least the meaning of names appears to be much less important than how they may sound (many people I have run into don't even know what their name means and aren't curious), I think people don't look at names in that way as much (in the American culture, other cultures still can make a big deal of names). How different cultures address naming has always fascinated me, there are some cultures that have very significant rituals associated with naming as well as rites of passage. In our faith, the temple reflects this, but I think many members don't understand the weight of this part of the ritual. My kids know why we named them and how big of a deal it was to me, but I also chose names that had a lot of variation of nicknames and always told them it was their choice. add-on: I think the "I am a Mormon" campaign was important to let people learn we were out there and not mostly a localized to Utah and the West sect. Now we can take the step of better explaining what we are through choosing a name that is more about what we want to be. Edited October 8, 2018 by Calm 1

thatjimguy Posted October 8, 2018 Posted October 8, 2018 Well, although latterdaysaintdialogue.org doesn't have the name Jesus Christ in it, it is talking of us, the congregation, so it should work. But churchofjesuschristdialogue.org is probably better since it has the name Jesus Christ in it.

Your explanation seems to imply that the past use of the term Mormonism wasn’t a mistake, but part of a bigger plan that is now entering a new phase. Your explanation differs from how President Nelson explains it. Still seeking... 1
