If God is offended by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints not using the full name of the church, how can any variation including Latter-day Saint work?

Honestly, I am so confused by what is expected on this name change issue.

Well, I'M not!

Uh, yes I am.  Whatever.

This name change direction from Nelson is a move of God with the Still Small Voice.  It is the right time to send the message of change.  The owners should pray and ask God to guide them.  He may tell you to wait.   Or He may inspire you with the words to use now.  In the future, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will discard the Book of Mormon and distance itself from its occult roots.  This is a great thread to pop out different names for the owners to consider or not.  The Lord will direct them with what to do, or not do, by the Still Small Voice by faith. The owners must not feel rushed or pushed.  They must do what they feel is right when they feel it is the right time to change. Everyone LDS knows how the Holy Spirit process works in temporal things.

So.... you're suggesting that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should amalgamate with the Community of Christ?  Interesting thought.

Agreed.  I am also having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that for 180 years church leaders and members alike were proud to be called Mormons.  There was even a major ad campaign a few years back called "I am a Mormon".  And now all of a sudden we are offending God and racking up a win for Satan when we use the term.

Well, YMMV, but I've never particularly cared to be called a Mormon. Then again, I'm a convert, not borned in there.  Maybe that makes a difference.

Well then, to be a good followers, I guess we all should go through our libraries and dump things like Meet the Mormons and Mormon Doctrine.

I'd be perfectly happy to dump Mormon Doctrine.

Still not seeing the logic in your point. President Nelson clearly called this a “course correction.”  To me that means that in the past, leaders and the laiety were getting it wrong by using the term Mormon or Mormonism to describe our faith.

Your explanation seems to imply that the past use of the term Mormonism wasn’t a mistake, but part of a bigger plan that is now entering a new phase.  Your explanation differs from how President Nelson explains it.

Still seeking...

Well then go back to my earlier response that nobody's perfect. If they were wrong to perpetuate the wrong name then they were wrong. But it's not something that put my eternal life in jeopardy.
I might also quote the third of 14 fundamentals in following the prophet by President Ezra Taft Benson;
"The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet."

Of course past prophets knew Mormon was the wrong name for the church. But in my opinion timing is the important factor. Now was the best time to make the correction.

We are not heavily criticizing past leaders.  The world knew us very well as the Mormon church and Church leaders went with that to further the missionary work of the church.
Now that the church is more well known in the world asking to be called by the original name is not going to be too much to ask, so if it is going to happen, now is a good time.

The fact is, the high leaders of the Church have been trying for many years to get us to stop saying “Mormon Church” or “LDS Church” But we’re widely ignored and even resisted. It is that spirit of murmuring that plays into Satan’s hand, just as would any resistance to prophetic direction. I believe the Lord is now telling us through His anointed servant it is time that we take Him at His word.

From time to time on this board and elsewhere I see criticism of a spirit of “tribalism” that allegedly besets us as a people. There could hardly be a clearer manifestation of tribalism than Church members self-identifying by a name other than what the Lord has commanded.

This is not completely true.

Surely, at times there have been LDS leaders who have encouraged the shedding of the term Mormonism or Mormon, but it has clearly been encouraged, allowed, and even embraced at times by LDS leaders.

FYI, doing this will let exmos (are we still allowed to call them that) control the narrative and own the search results when people search about "Mormons."

The way I recall it, when the WWW first mushroomed in the late 90's, Latter-day Saints tended to refer to themselves as Latter-day Saints, and the various apologetic groups generally avoided the word Mormon. Back then, FAIRMormon was just called FAIR. Other pro-Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint groups included SHIELDS, LDSTalk, and Zion's Lighthouse Message Board.

In contrast, critical sites tended to use the word "Mormon." For example, lds-mormon.com was a critical site that tended to dominate search engine results, and of course there was exmormon.org.

I recall a thread on the old FAIR message board where some posters who belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were lamenting how critical sites were over-represented in the top results of Google searches. I commented that this wasn't rocket science--if somebody searched on Mormon-this or Mormon-that, of course Google was going to return results that featured those specific words--especially if the words were in the titles. I recall a particular poster who figured this out, and responded by saying something to the effect that if critics were going to play dirty by targeting their content towards readers, perhaps members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should become more shrewd and follow suit.

After that, many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as the marketing professionals of the Church began to figure it out, and targeted their content. Thus FAIR became FAIRMormon, the Church had the "I'm a Mormon" campaign, the FAIR message board became Mormon Dialogue and Discussions, the FARMS Review became the Mormon Studies Review, FARMS (the people, anyway) became Mormon Interpreter, etc.

The new prophet seems more serious about eschewing the word Mormon than previous efforts. It will be interesting to see who follows this counsel and who will "please the devil" by trying to retain influence on the Mormon brand.

Nobody really answered my question above....so please note then that I should NOT be slammed for not following a prophet of a church I don't belong to.

Whatever happens....please let those of us who are not members know what is allowed.  Thanks!

I don't think the context is what is or is not allowed. It is what we choose to do or not do. The objective is to be better disciples of Jesus Christ in both word and deed. Knowing you a little bit, I think you would feel good about such a choice.

180 years ago, it appears, the Lord told Joseph that the name of the church should be The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, first written as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints--the hyphen added sometime later.  God in Mormonism greatly concerned with the letter of the law and not the spirit of it, allowed the Church and it's members refer to it by many nicknames over the course of a number of years that followed.  The leaders promoted the nickname in many campaigns as God permitted, and as they presumably directed via revelation.  Then suddenly a new prophet assumes the helm and he decides to go back to an issue he had raised decades earlier, claiming that God has been offended by nicknames and that the devil inspired the nicknames, type of stuff....and voila everyone drops their issues about it and gets on board, without any thought at all, it appears.

Is God capricious and arbitrary?  is he overly tolerant at times and completely intolerant at others?  With the notion of God being offended, is it reasonable for a God above to get offended at shifts in language and usage by people trying to make things work int he world?

If I were Nelson I'd worry about more important stuff.  I'd imagine God is more adaptable to the language choices of people on earth than he is strict about what precise words to use in different settings.  I'm glad this is an issue for the Church in a sense though.  it demonstrates the Church will spend millions and refocus on petty issues as the whims of it's leaders.  It's really quite telling.

I don’t portray them that way. President Nelson indicated that using the term Mormon was incorrect, and that doing so aided Satan.

I disagree with him, but I want to be humble, and have someone who supports 100% of what Elder Nelson says to me to show me how they reconcile his heavy criticism of 150+ years of LDS leaders using the term Mormon to describe this faith.

I’m trying to reconcile what President Nelson said in my own mind. For instance, why are we supposed to call the Holy priesthood after the Order of the Son of God the Melchizedek priesthood and avoid too frequent reputation of Jesus’s name, and yet are supposed to use the name of Jesus Christ all the time to denote his church? Is it right to nickname the Holy Priesthood after a man? Or alternatively, if we should avoid the common repetition of the name of diety shouldn’t we also avoid it in the name of the church?

I noticed that many of the official church websites still have url names like
Mormonnewsroom.org
LDS.org
LDSchurchnews.com
Mormon.org

However, those names are not on the front page of the sites as the name of the site. Its possible it will take a while to change the urls, if they ever do.

Gads, how quickly the criticism gets old and so...small minded and easy to overcome.

Let's start slow, again. What is the objective?  Think hard now. Keep it up; you will get there. Five points to the bright one in the back - to focus on the name of Jesus Christ and being his disciples. Now the really hard part; this will test those little minds of yours so put on your thinking caps.  I almost started too quickly, ready?  Okay.  In all the world, who do you think would like to take the focus off of being a better disciple of Jesus Christ?  I know this is really popping those brain cells, but you can do it.  Put forth your maximum effort.  No one?  Come on, think.....finally, teacher's pet won the day. You got it, Church Lady, could it be Satan?  You in sitting on the sides thinking I didn't see you. If you still don't understand, read this slowly fifty times. If necessary, use a hammer and I am sure you will catch it.

There's that.

But I think I'd be dead before it would be REALLY worth something.  I don't have one in any case, so it's moot.

What made you think of this domain?

Just checked, and tcojcolds.org is registered (as well as .com and .net TLDs).  But the domain has privacy enabled, and the owner of the registration doesn't show up. The registrar is based in Utah, FWIW, and the domain was registered in July 2018. So perhaps it could be the Church that owns the registration.  But I doubt it.  Because lds.org shows up as registered by Intellectual Reserve. I was surprised to see that their registrar is a German firm.

I don't think so.  I get what Pres Nelson says and understand the reasoning and overall I agree.   However I don't think it is necessary to divorce ourselves of the name 'Mormon" in everything.

Not so.  Using Mormon make Satan happy. He must be really happy over the past 170 years or so.

This is not an official website of the Church. I don't see any conflict with keeping the name of the website and respecting the prophet's declarations regarding the use of the name of the Church.

Keeping the name Mormon means you are making Satan happy.
