Mormon Leaks

I only watched the mini-clip and then the longer one. I've also watched pieces of other ones. It did give me a moment of realization what Oaks was probably thinking when he mentioned while talking about the report we've had 2 threads on. (ie. A sense that only specific reports or events would be covered by the media. If it may put LGBT issues in a negative light it may not get air-time). But it's a minute aside and without much context. I wonder why this was a few minutes long whiled other things were nearly an hour. It's also looking at a slightly ajar window in time. The context is in the peak of the Gay rights movement in 2008 you have prop 8 passing and the legal battle that followed there and in other states was continuing well past 2011. So it's not surprising that this would be on their minds. The tone about what to do has softened and changed to one less of battle grounds and more on finding common ground and protecting rights to practice as we please while others practice what they believe in their own way. My guess is that these meetings where they discussed LGBT concerns, if we had a continued window into them, would vary from this period of time. I would hope that this change may have also been about some of these presentations where other people, including LGBT members may have also come in to talk with them. As well a change in making the best of the new U.S. climate.

I've watched parts of other videos and there's really not much to be embarrassed about. They're just discussing current issues, concerns, etc.

Well I will say the ones I saw were, I believe from 7 or 8 years ago.  I'm hoping it's changed some.

I wonder why the released these and not anything recent, if they did hack them

Maybe the thief was not a hacker but  an insider who had already been fired before he could get anything more recent.

Just speculating here.

Overall though, I think this is generally a good thing and indicates that they really are trying to keep the leaders up to date on social trends

I found Gordon Smith saying "some of this maybe classified" not a good thing.  A) He should know if something is classified or not and if it is he shouldn't be telling it to anyone.

He's a senator.  Why would he know if something was classified or not?;)

I watched some of these last night and am quite happy about it in general.

Although I have always known, they come to their decisions like anyone else does. Just by gathering information and thinking about it. I am sure prayer goes into it of course, but the process itself is the same. Puts a new light on how they can be collectively right or wrong like anyone else.

I have been luckier than most understanding that these men can be fallible like anyone else. To some, realizing this may give some more fuel for the "shaken-faith syndrome" fire, so I feel bad for them having to deal with that, but it is what it is.

I kind of doubt there will ever be a Mormon President.  Just my opinion of course.

If we wanted them absolutely secret we would burn all records associated with them. However, that is exactly what our enemies would be expecting us to do so we videotape them and keep written records to throw them off.

We are cunning that way.

(I'm reasonably sure Judd's comment was tongue in cheek - and was essentially saying/implying the same thing you've said.)

You know what struck me as well as lack of women, lack of color. I saw mostly white men. Or did I miss something. This struck me though. I'm not trying to start something. But what you said made me remember my experience.

one of the presenters is a minority and he presents more than once. I can give a little more leeway to that because of logistics and the likelihood that that will naturally begin to change as the people in the quorums continue to diversify (which it is). It's also a question of where are these meetings recorded. A lot of the people of color that are called to quorums so far are also international and outside of UT. The pool in UT of potential leaders will automatically be smaller to pick from because of the demographics. In other words it's not necessarily a lack caused by structure but by circumstance and may likely change in the future without major intervention and some minimal awareness of minority leaders in white majority areas. Women it's likely more structural based on who is invited to said meetings. The pool is small because of how we structure leadership in the church. That isn't naturally going to alter until there is a change, desire, and changes that would place into practice what is being said of women being needed and having an important voice for the building of the Kingdom.

One last thing. I just listened to the one about relations with islam. I would put that down as basically faith-promoting. Very respectfully talking about inter-faith outreach, it shows (to me at least) the main interest by the brethren in reaching out and sharing the message of the Gospel to every people. There's also a cool comment Elder Ballard on fixing ignorant comments about people of the islamic faith and the possible advantage of very international congregations found in toronto compared to UT (he finished by saying: "Maybe it's Utah that we gotta work.")

I honestly see this, in what imperfect concerns there are, as generally showing an earnest concern about the understanding the trends of the world, how it may effect LDS populations, and continuing the main purposes of the church. This is not the controversy they were probably looking for.

http://fox13now.com/2016/10/03/man-behind-postings-of-lds-church-leaked-videos-says-clips-were-anonymously-emailed-to-him/

Watched Fox13 news tonight. They interviewed the man who leaked the videos, but according to this man, they were emailed to him anonymously. Also, they interviewed John Dehlin who said he has been contacted by thousands of people who say they know insider information. John mentions that many are relatives of the General Authorities.

Another Big Dump of What Mormons Really Believe

These reportedly are authentic meetings where Mormon leaders divulging what the church leaders really thinks about sensitive issues.  When word got out that transcripts of these meetings were about to be released to the public, in a bold move church leaders decided to put the actual video of these secret meetings on line.  A similar bold move was done decades ago when a reporter sneaked into the Salt Lake temple and took photos of the interior and tempted to blackmail the church to not release the photos.  The church countered by releasing their own set of photos.

Reports of spiked viewership have been confirmed because of the way this material has been brought to light.  The church is considering releasing further secret talks that delve into the darkest beliefs of the Mormon faith as a bold move to stem doubters of their historic existence.

Quite the scoop!  :P

I do too.

But when Joseph Smith was running for president, he began to worry that he might actually be elected.

Then, he was murdered, the only U.S. presidential candidate to have ever been assassinated other than Robert Kennedy, who was killed in 1968.

I listened to the hour long clip about YSA concerns this morning.

First, the data:  as of the filming (2008) we had only a 30% activity rate for YSA's in North America.  20% internationally.  And internationally, only 6% of members were temple married by age 30.

I remember hearing the statistic about the 30% activity rate for YSA around that time, but it was only for those YSAs that either 1) didn't attend an LDS university or 2) serve a mission.  Our stake was worse - we found that only 25% of those YSA remained active.  Of course, the numbers included those YSA that were baptized at 8 but never or rarely attended church, so it's hard to know how many go inactive after high school.  But it was a wake up call for our stake and as a result much more attention was given to helping transition YSAs to EQ and RS after high school.

Most of those to Dehlin were from me. Most contained links to Rick Astley videos and conspiracy web sites tying the Mormon Church to the Illuminati and the Reptilians.

Also, the Earth is Flat! WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

Hahahahaha

It seems someone has had the bright idea to share videos of GA meetings. Perhaps now we can get these Mormon church conspiracy theories out of the way. Either way, I love the dumping of pointless private drivel. It makes for good irony and obvious idiocy jokes.

http://kutv.com/news/local/watch-leaked-videos-show-briefings-of-lds-leadership

Sometimes RFM posters (Recovery from Mormonism) come up with innocent questions, like this one;

"How come the leaked videos don't show Jesus telling The 12 what to do? (n/t)"

I think most of us know that we are totally left on our own....

The focus on Chelsea Mannings sexuality in the wiki-leaks video were strange to me

So far, I think that is the only odd/damaging thing to come out of the leaked videos.  Here we have the apostles being given a lengthy presentation on a matter of national security, safety, and potentially church security and when it concludes the most pressing questions they seem to have revolve around the sexual orientation of Assange & Manning and whether or not the media has adequately reported on Manning's homosexuality.

ETA:  I forgot about the use of (and chuckling at) the term "church-broke".  That's disappointing at best.

I was just gullible enough to Google Rick.

Won't tell you who he is or what he did. (Don't want the heavy responsibility of infesting you with that ear bug for the next 24 hours.)
