cdowis Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 (edited) I am curious who currently attends these meetings. I understand the Relief Society has recently been included in certain meetings, and if they participate now in these sessions. Edited October 5, 2016 by cdowis

It makes me proud to be a member of this church where they show such concern for the members on such a wide ranging scale, and knowledge of what is going on in he world. It certainly puts into context some of the talks in General Conference and programs in the church. 1

Sister Beck was at the YSA one, the couple of others I have glanced at, I didn't see any women, but that could have just been the camera views. It will be awhile before I get around to watching them (conference is higher on my list).

By "great concern" do you mean skeptical of people that aren't of this Church and have different sexual orientations than the leaders of the church? 1

Please explain to me how "broke" in English can refer to someone who is obedient, or gullible. I have always understood the word to mean 'out of money' or broken.

A broke member therefore is one who has been trained by the Church to do what the Church wants. 1

I hate to burst the bubble..but there are other people out there..even those you are trying to convert.
Jeanne Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 It is unfortunate..but broke to me is just ...busted.

rongo Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Broke also applies to "broken heart" --- as in "broken heart and contrite spirit." Same concept. 1

From the context I'm not sure that's exactly the intended meaning, although possibly related. "Church broke" seems to mean trained to obey church leaders, from what I can tell. A broken heart and a contrite spirit is more about your relationship with God. Edited October 5, 2016 by Gray
rongo Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 (edited) It's used exactly the same way. "Church-broke;" "Christ-broke." When our heart is broken, we submit fully to Christ. People may quibble about the propriety of using it the same way, but that is the intended meaning. I think the idea of mindless, blind obedience is repugnant to most people, and perhaps that is why some people are reacting negatively to this phrase. It's not one I would ever use, but I can see a good intention behind it. Edited October 5, 2016 by rongo 1
Gray Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Just now, rongo said: It's used exactly the same way. "Church-broke;" "Christ-broke." When our heart is broken, we submit fully to Christ. Yes, but I think that's the idea behind "church broke." I do find it repugnant, and I suspect a large number of LDS would as well, although many may not.

I think that is why hearing the senator's staff described as "church-broke" and a joke being made about how they called a church leader to find out "what they should be doing" is a bit unsavory to many.
