We're Baaacckkk! -- Next Ow Action

Someone should point out to OW that women have occasionally attended broadcasts of the Priesthood session for decades.

Heck, I remember as a youth going to the Marriott Center on BYU campus many years ago to watch the general Priesthood session and having a guy and his girlfriend walk in and sit down near my dad and I to attend the session.

I think the woman was even wearing pants (gasp!) and no one appeared enraged or even irritated.

I remember thinking they were a little odd, but nothing was really said at the time by my rather conservative father.

No one made a big deal about it then at the center of conservative Mormonism, why would they now?

Of course OW could always stage some sort of protest to draw attention to themselves -- perhaps purple banners or something?

The moral high ground? They lost nothing by restricting access. News flash, they can now watch it from home anyway.

So what. It's exclusionary. We could exclude non-members from attending if we wanted to but why?

Yes- Moral High Ground, ie acting as Christ would act. Christ would not exclude the women from a meeting they wanted to attend. The priesthood impacts every person, whether male or female so the women do have a natural interest. So we prevent them from attending? Why tell them to go watch it at home. That's just rude and unnecessary.

The problem was that OW stated prior to their application that accepting the application would mean recognizing women as "potential elders" (IIRC that is a direct quote) meaning they would have publicized acceptance of them attending as acceptance of them holding the Priesthood eventually.

At which point it then becomes 'well, why haven't they gotten a revelation letting women in yet if it is going to happen eventually'?

Yep. It is going to happen eventually, whether in this life or the next. Women will/do hold the priesthood. Fact.

how do you know this fact?

Priesthood is authority to act for God, no? Is Heavenly Mother something less than God? Does she not hold authority? I would assume authority is nothing more than God's sanctioning to do what He needs done.

Having something be exclusive is not necessarily a bad thing.

Nonmembers are excluded from the temple.

Only members of the church sustain church officers.

Boys don't attend the young womens class.

11 year old boys are excluded from the priesthood.

Nonmembers who wish to join the church but will not agree to pay tithing or obey the law of chastity are excluded from membership.

Everyone on earth except for the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve are excluded from entering the Holy of Holies in the temple.

I hope this attempt to "raise hell" (Kate Kelly's words, not mine) at the local level results in a complete fizzling of the flame vis-à-vis everyone not caring at the chapels.

Its a total non issue and there is nothing immoral by restricting it to males.

That is really what I take issue with in your post. I really could care less if women come to priesthood. Just one more meeting to attend that they don't have to, if that floats your boat, go ahead.

BTW Christ restricted things all the time.

Good news, bad news!

OW will NOT be assembling en masse at Temple Square to try to gain admittance to the priesthood session. Instead, OW members will be attending their local priesthood sessions at stake centers across the world.

Damn, I love these women!

If they bting punch and cookies I'll go too, otherwise I'll stay at home.

Maybe we can ask that they bring punch and cookies???

I'll go (as opposed to watching at home) just to see if any women show up.

Frankly IMO its time to do some more calls to repentance and if they will not then some more excommunications

So when are they going to start attending HPG and EQ on Sundays?

Ugh. Thanks for that. It would have probably taken them several years to think of doing that if YOU had not brought it up sooner. All we can do now is get ready for them. They'll come soon enough.

I guess they figure it's easier to bully one's way into a meeting out in the hinterlands somewhere than it is to crash the Conference Center.

I do not see it causing much of a stir at the local level as there is always plenty of seating, unlike at the conference center.

Nothing wrong with this.  Not one thing.  And if Priesthood holders will be welcoming and not mess this up, oh happy day!

By the same token, men are surely invited to anything and all where women meet and convene.

Shoot..as a teenager, that would have been the time to have young men and young women share some classes.

Just my IMO.

I think its a broader issue than availability of seating. I think much of it has to do with decorum.

It's still fresh in my mind that the Priesthood Session of conference was closed to reporters after one newspaper insisted on sending a woman to cover the entire conference, including the priesthood session.

I've never heard of anyone being kicked out.

Having women in the congregation, who are there in support of OW, changes the tone of the meeting.  Instead of focusing on the messages being delivered many will focus on the gender of the audience.

Priesthood session has been an important event for myself and my boys in the past.  Hopefully the General Women's Meeting will be the same for my wife and my daughters.  Using these sacred events as a forum to push an agenda is unfortunate and I believe entirely inappropriate.

If anyone is focusing on who is attending rather than the meeting...well....

I have yet to see a feminist who thinks that there should not be all men and all women situations.  The problem we have is that men are allowed into the women's meetings at the general level and ward level without any fuss at all. Tales of women going into priesthood meetings to teach or watch are quite rare.   Women should be just as entitled to men free meetings as men are to women free meetings. So until that little blip is fixed, I don't think men have grounds to complain about women invading their space.

Are men sent to cover the women's meetings?

Are men sent to cover the women's meetings?

Not where I work (Church News). We have plenty of women to do the job -- including the editor, assistant editor, one of the staffers and, typically, one or more of the interns, who tend more often than not to be female.

I didn't know men ever attended on a ward level.

But then, I wouldn't know, as I've never been and have no desire to go.

I do see one thing wrong with this and others have mentioned it. Is the intent to go and learn or to crash the party? I can not judge any individual going, but the way it comes about make me doubt desire to learn and sustain leaders as a whole.

On a personal note - I love attending the YW/women's meeting with my daughter. My husband enjoys going to priesthood meeting with our sons. There is a real bond created doing this in our family. I would be disappointed if DH intruded on our girls night when not invited and irritated if he did it to prove a point or get his way. I would not to that to him and my sons.

More than just being one of the things, I think its the primary thing that's wrong with it.

Why do suspect that after an hour, they will be on the front lawn of the chapel posting tweets? The LAST thing they are interested in is receiving instruction from the brethren.

I'm confused.

Which is it?  Will women hold the priesthood, or do they hold the priesthood?  One is saying that it will happen in the future, and the other says it's already happened.  I'm not seeing how both statements can be true at the same time.
