Popular Post smac97 Posted October 17, 2024 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) New Temple Garments Being Tested to Better Serve Latter-day Saints Quote New temple garment designs for Latter-day Saints in extremely hot climates are currently being tested globally as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seeks to better meet the needs of members. This includes an “open sleeve” top for men and women which resembles a wide-strap tank top, a slip design for dresses, and a half-slip skirt design. Women’s Dry Stretch Open Sleeve Chemise | ChurchofJesusChrist.org The description for the new top reads, “The snug-fitting chemise top has no underbust seams. The round neckline is finished with a binding which is also used on the arm opening. The open sleeve is designed to be cooler and eliminate excess fabric at the armhole. Dry Stretch fabric is a soft polyester/spandex blend that dries quickly and is lightweight.” ... The full slip and half-slip designs both note the need to “address women’s health.” ... Women’s Light Nylon Full Slip | ChurchofJesusChrist.org Women’s Light Nylon Half Slip | ChurchofJesusChrist.org According to product descriptions, “The slip design more easily allows a variety of possible options to address women’s health or other needs. Light Nylon is a 100% nylon fabric that dries quickly and is lightweight.” These new designs are currently only available to select areas, including Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and the Philippines. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has not made an official announcement about this testing phase or when the new designs might be available on a broader scale. I am curious as to the assessments of the Latter-day Saint women on this board. What do you think? "Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and the Philippines." Large portions of these areas are A) warm/hot, and B) humid. But I assume there are other factors as well. And for the men as well: Quote Men’s Dry Stretch Open Sleeve Round Neck | ChurchofJesusChrist.org Thoughts? Thanks, -Smac Edited October 17, 2024 by smac97 5

I wish there was an alternative to wearing the bottoms under pants. 1
LoudmouthMormon Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Nice. And by the way, no, they're not "wife beater garments". This is the "wife beater" tshirt: 1
Popular Post MiserereNobis Posted October 17, 2024 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2024 Calling @JLHPROF! I remember a discussion awhile back where the conversation was whether or not the temple garment is underwear. The dress/slip version here would seem to lend weight to the idea that the temple garment is not underwear. But hey, what do I know. I just wear a scapular 6

bluebell Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 (edited) I don't have much of an opinion. The sleeves on the last iteration are short enough that they have practically be sleeveless for years (for women anyway). I'm neutral about losing an inch or so of cloth on the sleeve. The slip idea is probably nice for women who mostly wear dresses, but that's not me so again, no real opinion. We are taught that garments serve two purposes, 1) to remind us of Christ/temple covenants/take Christ's name upon us symbolically and 2) to cover our nakedness. Obviously the length of the sleeve has nothing to do with purpose #1. The amount of our bodies that the garment covers does have a lot to do with purpose #2, but I don't know where that line is, when it becomes so little that it is no longer serving that function. That is revelation/direction for the prophets and apostles and as long as I sustain them then I'll follow their lead on it. Edited October 17, 2024 by bluebell 3

And for the men as well: Thoughts? Thanks, -Smac Yes, I would love it because I'm constantly adjusting my garment sleeves and neckline that will ride up even with the most modest shirts showing my garments. This new one looks like it wouldn't ride up. But my husband would probably hate the non sleeves. Honestly, men wear non garment t-shirts with sleeves all the time underneath their clothes. If it's non sleeved for men, it would almost be like a tank top for men. I think the majority of men will hate the new top, and the majority of women will love the new top, the majority of women being the millennial and younger. The older members might have a problem because of the teachings so strongly taught that the sleeves needed to be there. Think of the photo shopping of the angels in the church magazine with sleeves, where the original artist had non sleeved angels. 4
Popular Post Duncan Posted October 17, 2024 Popular Post Posted October 17, 2024 We have long john style garments for those of us who live in the opposite type of weather, incredibly inclement!!!!!!! So, it makes sense to have style for people in hot, humid climates 6

I think the vast majority of older will be fine with it. One can still wear sleeves (I will, not for modesty, but comfort) with one’s clothing even if the garment is sleeveless. I just wear a scapular I’ve never looked at the garments as underwear. That seems so odd. They serve a completely different purpose. I wear regular underwear, with the garments on top. And, yes, at my endowment, I was told that was completely acceptable. As for the sleeveless thing, there’s barely a cap sleeve on the current version. I’ve never been fussed about it.

I'm also a little nervous with the wording in the official announcement, that makes me wonder if they'll restrict this to just super hot/humid areas. I hope not and would really want them to first roll out to areas that need it the most to assure saturation to those who've struggled the most with garments before opening up supply to the larger church body. But I also want some pairs in the nearish future. So I'm hoping it comes to everybody in time. With luv, BD Edited October 17, 2024 by BlueDreams 1

Plenty of places throughout the world are hot and/or humid at some point throughout the year. I think the Church under Pres. Nelson's tenure has been pretty nimble in terms of changing policies and procedures and rolling out implementations of them. I hope that is the case here. Thanks, -Smac 4

And other parts of the world - not just the US. Also, it's an individual concern, I believe - not one that can be simply assigned to a part of the world. For example, my wife and I react quite differently to both hot and cold weather. Although she was born and grew up in a much warmer place than I did, she suffers more from the heat. She likes to have the bedroom window open most of the winter, with the thermostat set at 12C/54F. However, she relents when outside temperatures fall below about -25C/-13F. 1

I have a box fan with a 4 inch hepa filter taped to the back as a highly effective air filter so my allergies can handle the window being constantly open with the fan blowing. From October to April usually. Edited October 17, 2024 by Calm 2

Yep, I assumed it would be rolled out to other parts of the world before the US, which makes sense because I think some of the fastest growing areas of the church are in hot, humid climates without access to central air (please don’t cfr me, this is just an educated guess, lol)
JLHPROF Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 At this point they might as well replace them with phylacteries or rosary beads or some other "symbolic reminder" of covenants because the garment of the holy priesthood is long gone. It no longer has the same symbolism in its overall design.

It's not meant to cover just for modesty. It's meant to represent several things scripturally that it no longer does (and in may cases hasn't for years). It has far more significance than is EVER discussed anymore so it makes perfect sense that nobody would care about additional changes. 95% of endowed members would have no idea anyway. Nobody knows so nobody cares. 🤷🏻

It seems clear (if we take visitation descriptions to be accurate) that no one wears garments in the next life. I'm good with changes as long as God condones them. 5
