Peacefully Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 We have a ward Facebook page and several of us are friends on Facebook. Of course FB is passé for a lot of the kiddoes, lol.

Amulek Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 seekingsisterwives Sorry, can't help but think of snarky answers. I would say Instagram seems to be the social app that I see the greatest number of people having in common. After that it gets balkanized pretty quickly. Some groups (or even wards) are using Facebook; some wards have YouTube channels. A variety of options end up getting used for communications (which seems to be the main driver in terms of adoption). GroupMe seems to be the popular one in my stake - despite my efforts to convert people over to Slack. Oh well, what can you do. 1
Pyreaux Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 I don't use any social media, nor a cellphone right now, but I'm an eccentric weirdo, so ignore me. 1

Pyreaux posts here, but doesn't use "social media". What kind of medium is MDDB, if not social? Anyway, I occasionally/rarely make posts on a "blog" of a friend. But that begs a question? A blog? What is that? (What a stupid sounding so-called word, in my subjective opinion). Regardless, according to the latest English usage of which I am obviously ignorant, is "blog", or is "blog" not, "social media"? What about Zoom? I have been intending to begin a thing called "Zoom". I hope that will not involve me in "social media"? I am thinking that if any of the above qualify as "social media", I will be much more wary. I hardly post here anymore. I thought it was "social media". I have got the impression from family and others that "social media" (whatever it is) can make you less likely to read books. I would not want that to happen to me. I already do not read as many books as I should! Edited June 20, 2023 by 3DOP 1

I already do not read as many books as I should! Well, my use of the term "social media" generally refers to digital platforms; like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram or TikTok. While, both forums and social media platforms facilitate communication between users. Forums possess unique qualities that differentiate them from mainstream social media platforms, such as a greater focus on specific topics and a higher degree of anonymity. Lacking in social networking dynamics; as with social media, users often connect with friends, family, and acquaintances, whereas forums bring together individuals based on shared interests, irrespective of other connections. It has features for it to be used like a social media platform, just a very niche and specialized one, without the widespread recognition or popularity as the platforms. Stargazer Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 Both my ward and stake have Facebook pages. Events are posted there. The stake has a YouTube channel that is used to broadcast stake meetings, e.g. stake conference. As the ward tech specialist, I have created a ward YouTube channel, but ward and stake leadership likes to use WhatsApp to communicate. But some ward leaders refuse to use WhatsApp for some reason. We use Zoom for ward and stake virtual meetings. Individually it's all over the map.
Rain Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Tufts University - Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. I was going to link more, but am having a tough time keeping everything written previously for some reason, but nearly every other definition is similar. Every time I have googled over the last few years forums/message boards have been included though usually I need to ask specifically about them often as usually the lists include branded social media such as Facebook few messages boards have enough following to be in those lists. But it doesn't matter where it is called social media or not for your reading.
3DOP Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 My wife says that Zoom is a "platform". Anyway...I have a reason to try that. It would seem I am uninvolved with "social media" as it is commonly understood. There was this Presbyterian Pacific island missionary guy here years ago...Paul Hadik! His name just came to me. He went on "Facebook" and I think I made this account with that thing for his sake. Maybe it is still around? Of course I have heard of all these social mediums, and especially Facebook. But it just never worked out communications wise for me. I never figured it out. ------------------- I have got old here. I could wish I was older and had missed computers. I have wasted a lot of time since they came along. My reading was much more prolific before the mid nineties. Even without so-called social media, I have wasted a lot of time. I hope to do better with the years I have left.

I am not fond of the sound either, but it made more sense once I understood where it came from since I am prone to shortening names. Edited June 20, 2023 by Calm
