Both my wife and I are throwing off the final symptoms of Covid.  Not fun.  I will be headed home to Oklahoma at the end of the week to be with my parents (both now 96).  I’m really glad the Covid thing happened before I got there.

I pray for your quickest recovery; and also for your Dad and Mom and all of your family. God bless all of you.

It may seem like I started a drive-by thread, but I had to fly home to my parents’ house. My dad is in the hospital with congestive heart failure and kidney failure. He was pretty close to death when I arrived the other day, but my mom convinced him to start dialysis, and he seems much better. Only time will tell if the improvement is temporary or not.

Meanwhile, my sister, my nephew, and I tested positive for Covid, so I’m isolated in a back bedroom. I don’t feel too bad, so maybe it will be a mild case. Needless to say, I’m not in the mood to debate anything.

Fortunately, my mom and my sister who flew in from Japan, are negative so far. Any prayers, good wishes, whatever, would be appreciated.

Best wishes and prayers from me! May you all recover very quickly and fully!

My wife and I got Covid not long after being twice vaccinated and once boosted. A fellow ordinance worker in the London temple got Covid both before and after being vaxxed and boosted.

Meanwhile, my wife's son, who works in a hospital, refused to get vaccinated and has never gotten Covid.

The wife and I did a coach tour of Europe (France, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Germany, and Czechia) over Christmas/New Years and came home with a nasty viral illness that wasn't Covid (tested negative anyway), and I'm still recovering from it -- really messed up my cardiovascular endurance.

Shouldn’t be surprising if vaxxed individuals get Covid. Nor that unvaxed individuals don’t get it. That is to be expected. More unusual to be hospitalized with it if vaxxed though.

Yes! Sometimes I forget this when responding to my anti-vax friends and family. That's the crux, the hospitalization.

I wonder about this. What was the rate of infection among those vaccinated for smallpox back in the day? I get the impression that smallpox vaccination was a virtual guarantee you wouldn't get it. Of course, by the time I got my own vax against it, smallpox was pretty near eradicated anyway. But still, what was the rate when those programs started? And the vaccination programs essentially made smallpox extinct. This doesn't seem possible with Covid.

Oh, well.

Oh, well.

Smallpox and Covid are different diseases with different variables of infection, mutation, etc.  It is why we don’t have useful vaccines for all diseases. Vaccines work differently as well, not only in mechanism, but in timing. Some are one timers, others need boosters every so often, such as tetanus. Others change each season or more often (but not practical to boost that often usually).  Covid is more like the flu where the vaccine needs to be constantly updated and only gives partial protection.

Yes, I know this.

In my opinion, the buildup of the vaccines in the media ("if you get vaxxed you won't get Covid"), with government authorities making extravagant claims about the efficacy of the vaccines in advance of any evidence supporting it, and demanding that everyone get it, personal agency be damned, was a disaster. Who trusts these claims now? I certainly don't, and I know many others who don't. I also followed lockdown requirements and masked religiously, and got Covid nevertheless. And I know others who did the same and got the same. I got a second booster, too, at my wife's insistence, but never again. It was useless theater, and in my opinion it was an incidence of government doing "something" in order to look like they were solving a problem, and for political reasons. But nevermind. This is hardly the forum for disputation on the matter. You can have the last word, if you want.

As said earlier, my prayers go out to John and his family for their full recovery from this affliction.

I have different situations that tell me I'm glad I got the first shot and the booster. First, that it probably helped me not land in a hospital if I got it, especially if I had preexisting problems. My daughter refused to get it, and now suffers with an odd voice change, she got covid a few times. But she's not saying if covid caused it. But she has a very deep voice now, like some smokers and has to take speech therapy. Then I have a friend in our couple group that he refused the vax, even though for years he'd gotten his flu shot, and he got covid and still has no sense of smell or taste. And then the gal that does my hair's dad nearly died from covid and was in the hospital for months lucky to be a live now. So I think it gave me peace of mind, and I still have yet to get it, but now that masks aren't worn, and we're back to before with shaking hands and not really taking precautions I'll bet I might one day. Because I think those things helped. But do believe people need to build immunity to it as well. It's just like playing the lottery or gambling on who gets it as well. So all around I guess people just do what they can and go by their instincts. I was one that refused the flu shot for years so I get others refusing the vax, but they shouldn't say the vax is bogus and can't accept that it did save lives.

So sorry to hear of your loss! Nothing compensates for this, but you are fortunate to have such a good memory of him. May those good memories comfort you.

You've had a tough couple or more weeks JK, I'm so sorry for the loss of your Dad. I'm glad he was so influential for good in your life and that your memories with him will help you through this and that he could very well be nearby, we never know.
