What To Do When Your Friend Turns Anti-Mormon?

Hello all.....I haven't posted here in a long time...but I wanted feedback from you guys. Your opinions I have always held in high regard.

I live in Utah. 10 months ago, a good friend of mine I've know for several years, ( I'll just call her Jane for privacy) who used to be a faithful Latter Day Saint, left the LDS church to join the Centerpoint church.  Her many LDS friends, including myself, tried to be understanding, kind and remained her friends to show we still care whether she was Mormon or not. We noticed that Jane had gone out and got a nose ring and some tattoos. Umm....okay. Going a bit rogue, much?  Ok fine we can handle that, not big deal.

However...3 days ago she posted on her Facebook page her "announcement" to declare to all that she left our church, to become....a Christian! BECOME a Christian?? Since when was she NOT one? She went on to spout the usual anti Mormon propaganda we've all heard before.... we worship Joseph Smith over Jesus....heck we even sing about Joseph more than Jesus! The bible is the only true scripture...yadda yadda.  Excuse me???

I really had to sit on my hands not to call her out and make a comment that she's been LDS long enough to KNOW what she's now saying is BS!!  She's telling lies that she KNOWS she telling lies! I am so appalled and flabbergasted! I did not see this coming.  I'm wondering who is feeding her this crap?  Her declaration post almost sounded scripted to me. Like someone put her up to it.

I did a group discussion on my messenger to my LDS friends who know her, to let them know about this sudden turn around and to join me me in keeping Jane in our prayers. One of the gals told me something Jane did to her that I knew nothing about til now. I hold an annual Christmas party at my house.  Jane kinda cornered my friend, who's faithful LDS, into a discussion of why she left our church and what was wrong with it! What? She did that to one of MY guests in MY home??  Fortunately my friend is a strong person and held her own against this little onslaught.   Anyway after a lengthy discussion we have decided not to include her in our gettogethers anymore as now she would make my LDS friends uncomfortable around her.

This all makes me SOO sad! Right now, I want nothing more to do with her and she is not welcome at my home for the time being. She is going down a dark path, and I don't want those bad vibes in my house. I don't care about her being in another religion, more power to her if that's what makes her happy. BUT...to turn around and attack my faith that I hold dear...that's crossing the line! If you insult my faith you insult me.

I also want to know if anyone has any knowledge about this Centerpoint church and is they who Jane is getting this crazy misinformation from? Is this what they teach?

How do you feel about telling other people that our church is "The church of Jesus Christ"? Do you think that may be a bit offensive to other Christian religions?

Posted

You love them.  That's all you can do.

Heber C. Kimball taught:

"I do not feel as I used to when I see a man going away from the society of the Church of God. I used to be filled with sympathy and plead with them hours and hours, importuning with them until my head would ache and my heart sicken; and I never had the satisfaction in even converting one such character in my life. If I should happen to get one converted he would not stay converted, so I have concluded, and I think wisely, to let them go, and not suffer myself to have any more feelings about it than I would about any of the common occurrences of life."

You love them. You accept that they can change beliefs and that is fine.  Remember, there is an article of faith we believe in that says just that.

I hope this is but a short time for her to be in this frame of mind. I went through the same thing at the starting of my faith crisis. I went to different faiths, and thought the Bible should be the only scripture. But since then I think a lot of institutions do the same thing she may think the LDS do. They put someone in the middle of her relationship to God/Jesus, IMO. Scriptures aren't all God breathed at all, and that's a scary thought if she's in a Bible church. One thing about the LDS church, their doctrine is not cut in stone, it's able to move on from harmful teachings hopefully, where a Bible church has to stick to the script. I don't know if you've heard of Shawn McCraney. He is a former LDS and he started down her path by believing more in Evangelicalism. Then he and his wife decided to visit several different faith congregations and saw the harm they were doing. And now basically just teaches out of the Bible w/o an organization with youtube.

What To Do When Your Friend Turns Anti-Mormon?

You can love and forgive her.  If she becomes insufferable to be around, you can discontinue the friendship.

I don't see how getting a group of people together to talk about your friend behind her back, is very useful.  If I were your friend, I might be thinking it's a good time to discontinue the friendship.  I'm not a big fan of gossip, or gossipers.

Were you really born in 1957?

Yes I was born in 1957  :)

I had to get that group together because some of them didn't know what was going on. They had to be aware that Jane might do the same to them if we have her at other parties.  They had a right to know what to expect from her so she doesn't' shock them unprepared.. We weren't really gossiping, we were banding together to be sure to include her in our prayers and we were all on the same page.

I know I must sound like I'm coming across mean and harsh at the moment...  :(  My apologies .....It's just I'm so hurt and her and I used to go to the temple together and watch Gen Conference together  ..all the plans we had for the future involving church stuff, reading scriptures together etc.  That's all been taken away. :(  Her joining another church doesn't bother me nearly as much as her doing a 360 degree turn around. She's becoming a person I don't recognize.  Until I can process all this I still want to distance myself from her for now.  I need to get to a point I won't lash out back at HER.  I don't want to do that.

bsjkki  ... I like your idea about setting boundaries.  Hopefully I can get to that point with her if she can be cooperative.  Right now I think she's lashing out at everything, even pushing away her friends  she is not caring at the moment if she's offended her friends beliefs.

Now you know how others feel when their family, friends, etc. join our church. Kind of makes you empathize with new convert families/persons.

I'd give her time, she's new at this and she might evolve into some other direction. Still love her and be honest with your feelings about missing the things you both enjoyed doing together and maybe start new traditions. Also, ask her about her faith journey and what happened, and also ask what her Sundays are like, maybe even going with her and visiting her church or watching online. This will put her more at ease and her defenses might come down.

You can check out the church online, of course (I did).

You mentioned your felt insulted by your friend, being appalled and flabbergasted, and your suspicions and indictment. These feelings can hijack the spirituality and rationality that can be passed on to others in a way they can receive them.

I think it is commendable that you sat on your hands. We are taught to not dispute or give place to the spirit of contention, and to give place to charity and the Holy Ghost. I recommend being willing to turn the other cheek to find inner peace, and let the light of truth shine brighter in your interactions with your friend.

Heh.  Go tell that to Jane, and see if she sees things similarly.  😉  (And I think you mean "banding together", although the way you spelled it certainly raised my eyebrow.)

Jane doesn't know about that, I won't tell her.

Heh.  Yeah.  I hate to say it, but as an active, faithful latter-day saint, I'm sort of on Jane's side here.  I hope she can find friends who don't keep secrets from her about how they get together to talk about what's to be done with her.

I know this isn't the advice you came to hear, but this is the advice I have to offer.  Have a good Sabbath.

Apples and oranges.  We do declare our church to Christ’s church but we spend virtually no time one why other churches are wrong.  I don’t mind listening to people when they tell me about their beliefs.  It is like a friend telling me all the good things about their new car.  That is all good.  If my friend spends a lot of time why my car sucks, I don’t need that.  I know my car well enough good and bad.

Your actions are those of an immature teenager, not a mature adult.

You were gossiping.  There is no “right to know”.

Thank you!  That's what I was trying to say to put across.   Jane and I have spent time together with me and my roommates since she switched thse past 10 months and everything has been fine, we just never talk about religion to her nor her to us. Things were going good. we were carrying on like nothing happened. There was no sign of her going down this path til now.  Then BOOM! That's why we are all so shocked.

I'm sorry but I disagree. They had to know what to expect.  If Jane is going to try to corner another of my friends with her bad mouthing our church to their face, then I'm sorry they need to be prepared for that. You can call it gossiping if you want.  I can call it caring enough about my other friends feelings not to be confronted in that manner.

I know, right? It's not like we have 60,000 members± throughout the world trying to convince non members why our church is right and theirs is wrong.

Just more excuses to cover your own bad behavior.  I call it gossip because that’s what it is. You don’t care about Jane or your friends. You only care about how this affects you and your plans.

You need to “prepare” your friends for potential bad-mouthing of the church?  Why is that your job?  And how immature are they if they can’t handle something like that?

This reminds me of the man who abuses his wife and then claims it’s “for her own good”.

I have never told anyone their church is "wrong". I have more non LDS friends than LDS friends of all faiths.  We share back and forth the good of both.

“Let me say that we appreciate the truth in all churches and the good which they do. We say to the people, in effect, you bring with you all the good that you have, and then let us see if we can add to it."

President Gordon B Hinckley

I visited the Washington Cathedral last month.  First thought was, “beautiful campus and church, too bad it’s wrong”.

If that's what you think they are doing you've totally missed the point of missionary work.

It's not about right vs wrong.  It's about teaching truth.  All religions have truth and therefore aren't completely wrong.  Some religions have more truth than others.

It's about spiritual education, not competing theories.
