Tacenda Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 (edited) FOR SALE: Gently used trumpet. Found downtown, has a couple of dings but still sounds great. Appears to be of vintage era. Best offer, trades considered. #coronaquake2020 Edited March 19, 2020 by Tacenda

Well, at least you didn’t suggest the accordion. “I understand that the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, astatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equaled the purity of sound achieved by the pig.” ― Alfred Hitchcock Edited March 19, 2020 by Bernard Gui 1
Scott Lloyd Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 (edited) I wonder if this might be an opportune time to change out the Moroni statue atop the Salt Lake Temple. Let's be honest: The Cyrus Dallin statue belongs to an earlier age and does not really fit our mental image today of Moroni's likeness. It looks a bit -- shall we say -- anemic, even a bit generic. Hardly surprising, since Dallin was not a member of The Church of Jesus Christs of Latter-day Saints. His parents had left the Church before their marriage, and Cyrus himself converted to Unitarianism. Compare Dallin's statue: With this more modern depiction atop the Brigham City Utah Temple; What say ye? Is it time for a retrofit? Edited March 19, 2020 by Scott Lloyd

Altars had horns at their corners because they symbolized divine power and fecundity, as in this reconstruction of the Beer Sheba altar. 5

mgy401 Posted March 19, 2020 Posted March 19, 2020 As I understand it, beneath Moroni’s feet in the central tower there is an elaborate pendulum/counterweight system that’s designed to allow the statue to sway without breaking during high winds/seismic events. I suppose a review of that system’s efficacy is being added to the renovation to-do list . . . 1

Actually I did too and that's what made me think of it. I told him it's no fulfillment of any prophecy, just an earthquake hit and knocked it out of his hand. It reminded me of when the Teton dam broke in Idaho and washed away many houses and caused much hardship for the residents there. When President Spencer W. Kimball came he was asked the question, "Why did this flood happen to us?" They were no doubt expecting some great prophetic God involved reason for it. His response was. "Because the dam broke." 3
