I told him it's no fulfillment of any prophecy, just an earthquake hit and knocked it out of his hand. It reminded me of when the Teton dam broke in Idaho and washed away many houses and caused much hardship for the residents there. When President Spencer W. Kimball came he was asked the question, "Why did this flood happen to us?" They were no doubt expecting some great prophetic God involved reason for it. His response was. "Because the dam broke." Should have gone with "Because the dam thing broke" and leave it to the listener to decide if there was an "n" at the end of the word. This is also Item #847 on the list of reasons Nehor should never be an apostle. Edited March 19, 2020 by The Nehor 2

For example, in October 2001, just after the destruction of the world trade centers and the tragedy of the loss of all the lives, President Hinckley said this in his opening address of General Conference: "The era in which we live is the fulness of times spoken of in the scriptures, when God has brought together all of the elements of previous dispensations. From the day that He and His Beloved Son manifested themselves to the boy Joseph, there has been a tremendous cascade of enlightenment poured out upon the world. The hearts of men have turned to their fathers in fulfillment of the words of Malachi. The vision of Joel has been fulfilled wherein he declared: "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call" (Joel 2:28-32). Perhaps you could clarify how you are seeing it because I can interpret your post in a couple of ways. Edited March 19, 2020 by Calm

I was just giving an example of what you said about the prophet being the one to identify signs from God. I have not heard president Nelson say that Moroni losing his horn is a fulfillment of what the prophet Amos said. Maybe I don't understand your question.

I agree it is ludicrous to indulge in convoluted thinking that an earthquake causing a piece of a statue to fall off is some sort of sign about missionary work. That said, there are prophecies the Lord has given in scripture that are meant to be guideposts, so to speak, for us to be aware of the unfolding of His work in latter days. From “Guide to the Scriptures” under the entry “signs of the times”: “Events or experiences that God gives to people to show that something important in His work has happened or will soon happen. In the latter days, many signs for the Second Coming of the Savior have been prophesied. These signals allow faithful people to recognize God’s plan, be warned, and prepare.” I’m not aware of any written instruction or directive that says that in each and every instance it is necessary for a prophet to explicitly identify a sign of the times when it transpires. I should think those of God’s covenant people who are knowledgeable, faithful, in tune with the Spirit — and wise enough not to get caught up in fanaticism or the excesses of gospel hobbyism — are capable on their own of discerning the signs of the last days. Of course, we should be alert to and heed ongoing prophetic direction when it comes to us, especially that which counters unauthoritative claims and excessive zeal. I figured that is what you were doing, but got to admit I am a bit paranoid about the subject, probably from one too many explorations into the current lineup of hedge prophets (think old fashion "hedge witch"). 1
marineland Posted April 2, 2020 Posted April 2, 2020 Why didn't they put the statue of Nephi on top the Haiti and Cambodia temples? https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/temples/details/port-au-prince-haiti-temple?lang=enghttps://churchofjesuschristtemples.org/phnom-penh-cambodia-temple/

Sorry. It was a typo. This is funny. History repeats itself. The same kind of "typo" occurred in 1839 in the hand written manuscript of the History of the Church, where the name "Nephi" was written instead of "Moroni". Anti-Mormons should take note, this kind of thing DOES happen unintentionally. I seem to recall hearing a story of a GA debunking a myth that said when Jesus visited the SLC Temple at the start of the Millennium the angel Moroni trumpet would sound off. The GA is supposed to have said, "I hope not, because it would blow bird crap all over downtown!" I have no idea is this is an apocryphal tale, but if it actually happened it would have been J. Golden Kimball saying it, I should think. Except that in the story I heard he didn't use the word "crap" but the other word.
sunstoned Posted April 3, 2020 Posted April 3, 2020 The local news tonight stated that work on updating the temple is continuing and that they are going to take down the Moroni statue soon so that they can repair some of the stones in the towers that were loosened by the earthquake.
