When I booked my tickets, the virus was not even on the map. Even when I left, it was mainly in China with just a few cases in the Bay Area. In 5 days, Trump made his speech about closing borders to everyone. I probably got 30 messages within 15 minutes. Later that was clarified that citizens could return. But then Spain closed their borders a couple of days later even though Barcelona had less cases than San Francisco. People were making arrangements to fly to England because that country was not closed. Then two days later England was included. Rumors were going on that the airport would closed. Then there were rumors that the airline was laying off 50% of their workforce and cutting flights. You could only fly into 13 airports in the US. Fortunately one of them was San Francisco where I had my ticket. This all happened within 10 days. I can't tell you how lucky I feel that I made it home in the nick of time. Even with that, extra screening at the airport and told to remain quarantined for 14 days. Two days later, all of the Bay Area is in lockdown. I have total sympathy for those that are caught up in this mess. A single speech by the president of a country given on a minutes notice can turn your entire world upside down. I just feel incredibly lucky to be back home. Glad you made it back. Things are moving fast. I hope it all returns to normal just as fast. 1

Rain Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 I may have missed it, but the info about missionaries returning home early has changed again - at least for some missions. On my phone I haven't been able to find it on the church website, but this was posted by a missionary mom in our group from his MP: First it gave the info posted previously about how missionaries "may" come home. Then the MP said that was updated to: "Consequently, every young missionary elder within your mission who has served 21 months or more as of the next transfer is to return home on that next transfer". So it's possible it is not all missions, but I know from my call with my son this morning that the other 2 missionaries in his apartment are also coming home - to make way for missionaries who have served for less time in other missions around the world. So while it doesn't sound like every mission it's beginning to be the case for at least some of them. By the way, transfers will be done differently this time in my son's mission. They usually all go to one place to transfer. This time they will be transferring one by one and it will take about a week. But that doesn't start for another week, so who knows what will change by then. 2

OK I gave you a rep point for that. Now the question becomes what that means. It COULD mean that I agree that "even you" can find a place in the Lord's church! 😲 On the other hand, as Moromonese puts it, that phraseology finds you in good company - and I can't figure out this usage at all, or where it originates in Mormondom. It is that use of "even" which is kind of the opposite of what you mean here-- and I mean the usage like this phrase " We believe in the Savior, even Jesus Christ" !! How is that different from "even me"?? Only Mormons talk like that!! Where the heck does THAT come from?? "I believe in the King of the Universe, even mfbukowski." Does that mean that I am listing beliefs, like "I believe in the king of the universe AND even mfbukowski, and alien abductions " or "I believe in the existence of the king of the universe- in fact I even believe in mfbukowski" or, in Mormonese that mfbukowski IS the king of the universe? Rain Posted March 20, 2020 Posted March 20, 2020 Newest email about missionaries from the church: Quote Dear Brothers and Sisters, We take very seriously the health and safety of our missionaries and of those they teach. The rapidly developing travel advisories and restrictions that are emerging around the world present significant logistical and other challenges. Therefore, the following temporary adjustments are being made: In the coming weeks, based upon world conditions, substantial numbers of missionaries will likely need to be returned to their home nations to continue their service. This will be done in a systematic way based on the urgency of travel restrictions, level of COVID-19 concern, and other considerations. Returning missionaries will go through a 14-day period of self-isolation and then may be assigned to serve within their home country, based on local conditions. The term of service for missionaries returning to or serving within the United States will likely be reduced to accommodate the large number of missionaries returning from around the world. Missionary training centers worldwide will not receive new missionaries. MTC training for missionaries will take place through technology, and missionaries will be sent to their assigned mission as soon as possible. As we evaluate changing conditions, further necessary adjustments will be made. We love and pray for our missionaries and their families. We are grateful for the continued prayers and support of parents, loved ones, and Church members as we make every effort to help them remain safe and well in these challenging times. Sincerely, The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles 3

You're right about the use of "even" in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'm something of an aficionado of words, but nothing jumped immediately out of my personal data banks in the way of a definition. So, I did what any reasonable person would do under the circumstances: I went to the dictionary. I've consulted two on line so far, and I can't find a definition that fits how the word is used. Search me! I'm stumped! As for my use of the word, I'm using it in the adverbial sense as a means of expressing surprise: Quote adverb adverb: even used to emphasize something surprising or extreme. (Hey- everything is shut down and I am bored... , but that has bugged me for nearly half a century now... ) 1 John: 5:6 – “This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ;” My sense is that the King James Bible-loving General Authorities have incorporated this usage into their own religious language. The word “even” here is meant to clarify the previous phase by emphasizing identity. It might be rephrased: "This is he that came by water and blood, namely Jesus Christ.” Note this online discussion with a reference (from the 3rd respondent) to that highly respected arbiter of the English language, even the Oxford Dictionary of English: "8. a. Prefixed to a subject, object, or predicate, or to the expression of a qualifying circumstance, to emphasize its identity. Obs. exc. arch. Also in 16–17th c. (hence still arch. after Bible use) serving to introduce an epexegesis; = ‘namely’, ‘that is to say’." 1
The Nehor Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Perhaps I was harsh. I have been a voyeur on this since January and saw the writing on the wall but I am probably not typical. I will try to be more empathetic. Just got off a call. Missionaries in my mission and several others in the US now have instructions to stay home except for visits to the church and to take care of things like getting food. Missionaries cannot eat in member homes though a few continue to drop off food for them. Missionary financial allotments have temporarily increased their spending money to compensate. I have no idea if all of this is general to the entire US but I am guessing it is. 2

Rain Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 I have found out the parents are now being asked to not post planes etc of missionaries leaving, only when the missionaries have arrived. There are a few problems involved and it could make the whole situation more complicated. 1
Ginger Snaps Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) I’m in CA. The two Elders serving in my ward are both being sent home. They’ve both been out just over a year. I have one of their mission brothers on Facebook (was in my ward, now serving in another area) and he’s going home as well after a little over a year. I don’t know yet if it’s the whole mission or just some of them. Edited March 23, 2020 by Ginger Snaps 1

People were flocking to the beach towns here in Oregon, decimating the resources of the local grocery stores and putting the very limited medical resources at high risk. Social distancing was non-existent. Local authorities have been forced to take drastic measures, ordering all visitors to leave, etc. 1
