Governor blast the public homecoming of 1,500 Latter-day Saint missionaries Utah Governor Gary Herbert and Lt. Governor Spencer Cox have blasted the public homecoming of several hundred missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Salt Lake City Airport. 1,500 LDS missionaries returned home Sunday from serving in the Philippines due to the coronavirus situation there. Governor Herbert sent out a tweet Sunday night that said: "As missionaries return home due to the spread of COVID-19 across the globe, they should not be met by big groups of family or friends. Large welcome parties are dangerous and could greatly increase the spread of coronavirus in our state." Lt. Governor Cox also tweeted regarding the reception for the missionaries: He said he ws "Really disappointed in the behavior we saw from missionary families at the SLC airport tonight. I get it, I’ve been there (and still have a child serving), but this is unacceptable. In a time of shared sacrifice, we must do better to save lives." The church is asking missionaries to self-isolate for 14 days regardless of where they traveled from.
The Nehor Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Americans are not good at following instructions in general. I suspect this is part of why we are now third in the world in confirmed cases. Only behind China (who are admittedly probably lying) and Italy (who we will probably pass soon). 1

With people from literally all over the world flying to us (well, pre-travel ban) all the time. I suspect that if everyone were tested, a very large number would be found either to have it or to have had it already. 2

There is some of this but asymptomatic cases are not believed to be that common. Current estimates are around 20%. That could be wrong. We are still in the early stages. The lack of social distancing means this thing is going to spread like wildfire. The world went from 200,000 to 300,000 confirmed cases in three days. A lot of that is due to tests becoming a little more available but we are still for the most part only identifying serious cases.

This was put out today, looks like they are working with the church and the airport to not let this happen again.

I've wondered about this. Are there countries where everyone is getting tested, asymptomatic and symptomatic both? And how long have they been testing everyone? 1

There are empty streets in Rome and Paris, and yesterday (Sunday) I went for a bike ride (alone) and went by two local grocery stores and a pizza restaurant and all of them were packed. This was in Utah County.

I think a good proportion are from what I hear, others are not (though now we have had our first death and it sounds like he wasn't a high risk case, less ability to deny it is out there and not restricted to the sick and elderly), and others are perhaps trying to get in some party time before it 'gets here'....missing the point. This was in Utah County. From what I hear from my friends in Europe no one is taking it seriously there either except the Italians in the most hard-hit areas. Paris has calmed down a bit but even last week it was way too crowded.
