Ya know, this makes me think that general conference may be good timing, helping people stay home and recoup, and also bringing the church home to those already confined for immune problems and sickness! JLHPROF Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 The paranoia over this is amazing. 100 cases in the US and 6 deaths of already sick people and it's the end of the world. Over 50,000 died of the flu in the US last year. Worry about the flu. 4
Prof Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 Several years ago, I went to stake conference and a family came in and sat right in front of us. Their daughter, probably about 5 or 6, was sneezing and coughing. Two days later, I began sneezing and coughing. Nasty bronchitis. Nowadays when I sit down and notice someone near me coughing and sneezing, I quietly get up and move. Usually, that means listening from the foyer. Not what I would prefer, but I won't put my health at risk like that again. 1

What is suggested besides throwing it in the wash or spraying with bathroom cleaner? I wipe mine down with alcohol swabs I have at work. Lysol wipes would be good too. The simple friction of wiping it down should get rid of most of it though.

"High risk" is a relative term. Even with the poor chronic health conditions, the worst estimates are around 10-12% chance of dying from the virus. For those over 80 years old, the estimate is around 15%. These are rough estimates and actual rates are probably lower than that as cases are thought to be under-reported world wide. Your wife is far more likely to survive than die from the virus, but I can understand why you would have some anxiety and concern about this virus. I think JLHPRF has a point in that the flu is probably the greater risk at present in the US, even for your wife. That could change though. 2

I guarantee the actual rates are much higher than that. We are not even coming close to testing every patient that presents with symptoms and we have no way of tracking asymptomatic cases. My wife and I aren't among the people who seem to be glued to their television or some other news feed to get every tidbit of information about this as it comes in. We just hear something about it here or there and try to make sense of it all. What you have said helps me to feel better. I just hadn't heard this news before. 2

It's easy to find a dead person. The only way to find someone COVID positive is to test them. For all we know, every confirmed case in the US has 50 unconfirmed cases. Plus, it seems to be getting clearer that some people contract this thing and never show any symptoms. So, knowing there are still unanswered questions, means we can't draw that conclusion about the mortality rate, or the morbidity rate. 4

Probably the number of people in Washington state who have been exposed as much higher. My understanding is that there, the source is not known. There is someone walking around as a carrier and that person himself probably does not know it. In this case it probably would be better to work backwards and go from the six deaths to figure out how many have become ill and not noticed it. Anyway that is my understanding. If that is correct we will probably see an explosion in number of cases in Washington that have not yet been diagnosed. Edited March 3, 2020 by mfbukowski
mfbukowski Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 (edited) Actually it's just a satanic plot to kill off Temple workers and those who attend. They get to shake hands a lot. It only takes one in a session and everybody's got it. Now it's time to build up your immune system and not worry about shaking hands. And praying a ton. Edited March 3, 2020 by mfbukowski 2

Maybe plastic gloves would help. My wife is allergic to latex. Otherwise I think I'm going to try using the Tai Chi hand signals from now on, even with them. The temple seems like a good place to use sign language. I think we just need to learn to avoid touching each other, at least not without some form of protection. In the future they will say things like: I remember back when people would touch hands together, actually touching bare skin. Some will say: Really??? Others may remember.

What if the church itself did a "sacrament meeting" for every everyone? Bishops could authorize the priesthood to bless the sacrament at home. A few other members who did not have the priesthood available could visit other families to receive the sacrament. We could watch it all from home as it was broadcast from another location possibly even Salt Lake City as if it were a conference. Or for a ward using streaming social media. It would be cool to hear a GA speaking directly about currently occurring events on a weekly basis. I suppose that's if things get really bad. I can imagine something like that working in any case of major disaster, National or even local. As long as some technology is still available obviously, if not, we go back to the really old days, meeting at Homes etc Edited March 3, 2020 by mfbukowski 2

Most people here would do just what you did and shake hands so not to cause a disturbance but I don't think I could let such behavior pass... And I would later advise the SP or Bishop... The fact that someone would come looking for me would be what would set me off.... GG The guy's a creep. 1

Nitrile gloves are what health professionals usually wear. Even my ridiculous-number-of-contact-allergies youngest managed to not react to them. A lot of doctors’ offices (especially oncologists and such) have a box of masks at check-in with a sign asking people to wear one if they are sneezing or coughing. Maybe we could make that a thing at church. 3
