Even my ridiculous-number-of-contact-allergies youngest managed to not react to them. Maybe we could make that a thing at church. Good idea. Probably won't catch on, though. Glove dispensers and mask dispensers at each door location for visitors might be a workable option, though. Members would probably be expected to provide their own, with welfare assistance for people who couldn't afford them.

Over 50,000 died of the flu in the US last year. Worry about the flu. The flu is already here and is not going anywhere. That the flu has a higher death count SO FAR is not a good reason to ignore Coronavirus. Coronavirus also has a substantially higher fatality rate than the viruses we call the flu. I also doubt you would support an effort to counter terrorism in the United States if I were to argue accurately that the flu kills more people than terrorism. If this disease spreads in the United States and elsewhere and becomes common it has the potential to become a common ailment alongside the flu which could mean an annual death count increase from these kinds of diseases. Some estimates I have heard say it could double the flu fatality rate, potentially in perpetuity. That is something to be concerned about. The WHO also just gave an update saying it may have a more lethality rate than the last estimate but they believe it is not as easily transmitted as most flu strains. We are also up to 9 deaths in the US now and cases are believed to be found in 13 states. The bigger danger is to less developed countries who may not have the medical resources to save those who could survive the disease with good treatment. Iran has called out the military to help contain the disease. It has reached South America and Africa and those regions are less likely to be able to contain the disease. But to be on the safe side I should probably not even hint that he is the one who is sick. I reckon. Yes, that is the kinder way Pretend you MIGHT be wrong even when you know you are right, just to be kind and not hurt their feelings. It is more important to be kind than to be mean to someone who is doing the best they are capable of. I am trying to learn that as well. 2
bsjkki Posted March 5, 2020 Posted March 5, 2020 On the Primary Presidencies Facebook group page, I just read that some wards in Washington are having church cancelled? Anyone know about this?
carbon dioxide Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 I wonder if conference will still occur if it starts spreading in Utah.

I can’t imagine why they would cancel it. With as many people as can view it on tv in the world, it would be a very important time to have conference. Remotely. Like most of us already do. 1

Only if it mutates annually like the flu. We have no indication yet of any mutation. Because it is a new virus, we are all immunologically naive to the virus and thus it spreads everywhere. But if it doesn't mutate, we will likely develop long-term immunity from natural infection and the virus will fade away over time. Only young and immunologically naive people will be susceptible in the future - and it is usually a very mild illness in children. If it does mutate into equally (or more) fatal strains, then we have some serious and scary problems. 1
Tacenda Posted March 6, 2020 Posted March 6, 2020 I'm wondering if there is a concern about the temple, since there is a lot of hand touching there.

They have confirmed at least two strains but I have no idea how quickly change happens. There are similarities to SARS which is good because it has a low mutation rate. If it has influenza level mutation rates we are in trouble. If it has HIV level mutation rates it would be really bad but I believe we would have noticed by now if that were the case. I have heard it is usually mild in toddlers and up. By mild I mean usually not fatal. I have not seen anything on infants yet. 2

Calm Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 (edited) Public service announcement as I am killing time: Best prevention step: https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/when-how-handwashing.html PS: Masks work by sick people wearing them in that spit and mucus gets caught when they cough, etc. They might help healthy if it stops them from touching their mouth before washing hands, I guess. Peacefully Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 Hubby and I just cancelled our Caribbean vacation that we were supposed to start soon. We aren’t really scared of the virus, but we don’t want to get stuck in quarantine on a cruise ship. We were almost stuck in the gulf during Hurricane Harvey but luckily we stopped in New Orleans for supplies and we got off the ship and got a rental car to get home. This would not be possible if we were in quarantine. I don’t plan to give up all travel but getting on a cruise ship is a gamble. 3

Calm Posted March 7, 2020 Posted March 7, 2020 https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/church/news/first-presidency-discontinues-one-year-waiting-period-for-temple-sealings-after-civil-marriage?lang=eng Quote Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints discontinued a policy Monday morning requiring couples who marry civilly to wait one year before being married or sealed in the temple. The change means Latter-day Saint couples can look forward to a temple marriage as soon as their circumstances permit. Effective immediately, a man and a woman who have been married civilly may be sealed in the temple anytime after they receive their temple recommends for the sealing ordinance, according to a May 6 letter signed by President Russell M. Nelson and his counselors in the First Presidency, President Dallin H. Oaks and President Henry B. Eyring.

carbon dioxide Posted March 9, 2020 Posted March 9, 2020 Until a vaccine is distributed, this will greatly affect both Temple and missionary work around the world. Might be a good thing for prospective missionaries to think about holding off a bit. My cousin in Japan can't go anywhere in Japan right not. He is confined to his home. Italy is on lock down and it come to a city near you. 1
