Our ward starts at 12 and I got called at 10 in the am to speak and the other brother hadn't shown up while I was speaking so I was thinking I had to stretch it to like 50 minutes. Gladly he showed up after I shamed him in public of courseB:)

Did they actually understand the reference?  Could this just be an illustration of internet Mormonism (to which you & the speaker are attuned) vs. chapel Mormonism?  Serious question, seems like this one could go either way.

PS.  I do realize everyone's on the internet these days, but some spend time where they can control the content they're exposed to by filtering out unwanted people & their unwanted ideas.  Sites like Facebook and Pinterest are highly popular among LDS...

This is the only place I have heard talk about it. Nothing on facebook. No in person conversations etc. Edited to add: even though I heard about it, you would have heard crickets from me as well.

I am so weary of speakers' lame openings that involve references to the time that is left in the meeting and what of it they will/will not take or leave/not leave for Brother Fishbreath who is following them or how they became suicidal when they saw the bishop's number on their caller ID and new he was going to ask them to speak. Can you just give your dad-gum talk and take responsibility yourself for using an appropriate amount of time and/or ending the meeting on time?

:lol:Loved this!!

It is making the round among my family and friends.  I know because i see them post articles about it on Facebook (those in support of the church).  These are people that i know aren't on any message boards but i'm not sure where they are seeing it.  I didn't bring it up to any of them.

But like you said, even hearing about it, it would have been a really uncomfortable moment in church.

The youth in my ward were watching the video and talking about it (I have a son in that age group).  Many of them shared the video with their parents, from what I heard.

Also, my sister mentioned she heard about it from discussions on Facebook.

Today in Sacrament Meeting, the last speaker was a little pressed for time, so he gets up and says "Brothers and Sister, good morning.  I know we're pressed for time, so if I go on too long  I've asked Bryan [the first counselor in the Bishopric who was conducting] to cut off the mic and ask me to sit down...."

Crickets.

But mad props for trying.

Did you not at least burst out with a snort?  I would have not been able to control myself.

Oh man.  And how do you think he felt about the situation?  We he pro mic being shut off or anti mic being shut off?

Oh wow, me too!  I think no matter how you feel about what happened with this young girl, it's not something to joke or laugh about.

It made national news. Google lesbian Mormon teen comes out at church or similar.

It made international news (at least to the UK with an article devoted to it yesterday in The Guardian).

I know it made national news. Just for whatever reason I've heard nothing about it from people I know IRL or online except here. But I have only heard about Trump once or twice since he was elected and that was from someone who lived outside the US, so maybe it's just my friends. Or maybe, lol now that I think about it, it may be because I have actively stopped following friends who "share" things 75% of the time instead of doing personal updates.

About what happened to her, no.  But the reaction swirling around it, including some really absurd over the top from a variety of positions...to me there is a portion of it all that has become theatre of the absurd.

To outsiders, there is an aspect to this that has appeal if one views it as a courageous young girl speaking up in front of a conservative community that went so far as to cut her mic when she was doing so. Is it theater? Of course it is. Was it staged to maximum effect? Probably, or if not it sure looks that way. Does it seem odd that in Cinepro's ward no one so much as chuckled at the comment? I don't know. I doubt it's because no one got the reference, though.

I would have given you crickets. But to be fair. I gave just about everybody crickets today. Could not stay awake in sacrament meeting to save my life!

For the record, my little bro has texted me an article (he's 18) and a guy I was hangin out with (he's 37) brought it up briefly as well.

With luv,

BD

Asked my family today and only my 15 year old had heard about it. Knowing him he would have been quite uncomfortable with the joke had he heard it.

I would have started laughing so hard. I love awkward moments that drag an elephant into the room.

I'm glad his joke fell flat. It was dark humor that had no place in sacrament meeting. I'd say this even if the joke weren't lame (which it was).

I think that between the video and its release and also that her mother seems not be a member anymore, I can see a publicity stunt designed to hurt the lds church. Or at least a stunt to gain publicity for 15 minutes. It was going to be a sucker punch regardless of the outcome of the speech. I believe that the mic was cut off because someone or the congregation were uncomfortable listening to this in a sacrament type meeting.

And now looking into the future, will this girl now be a pride young woman of honor duing Pride Day. Will she get an Ellen invite? How much media will she now get? I hope very littlle. But I won't be surprised it she does get some TV or public acclamation. .
