Does coffee threaten one's hope of eternal life?

I read something in the article on page 8, heading "April 2016 Conference Notebook".

"A promise was given that through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, if we obeyed the laws and
priesthood ordinances of the gospel, we would have eternal life, the greatest of all His
gifts
."

In light of the Word of Wisdom, does the LDS Church offer any guidelines as to whether the
occasional coffee keeps you out of the temple and thus without hope for eternal life in the
highest division of the Celestial Kingdom?

Thanks,
Jim

Very funny.
Not being able to partake in the ordinances of the temple would keep you from exaltation, but not salvation/eternal life.
Right now obeying the Word of Wisdom is a requirement for temple worship.

So yes, I suppose a cup of coffee could have that result.  But in an indirect way.

I think rationalization will keep us further from the hope of exaltation than the actual coffee would.

My old grandmother wanted to be able to return to the temple but she hadn't been in a long time and had developed the habit for drinking coffee. The Bishop encouraged her to stop and she tried but she had used it for so long that she was very dependent on it and her old body couldn't take the withdrawal pains of cutting it out completely. The Bishop finally told her the if she could cut it down to a half cup per day he would give her the recommend. That she was able to do and she got the recommend. So it's not the coffee itself but the obedience that's important and she was obedient to her Bishop's direction.

Hello Jim,

When I read your post I thought of the story in II Kings about Naaman:

8 ¶And it was so, when Elisha the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 So Naaman came with his horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisha.

10 And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

11 But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

13 And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?

14 Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

Obedience is the key that unlocks righteousness - it is not the actual act.  Just as Naaman was much more willing, based on his own pride, to think that if washing in a river was all it would take then he would wash in the greater rivers rather than follow the simple command of the prophet.  I don't really know why some things are requested of us and we can each convince ourselves of their foolishness - we each know a greater river, a better act of service.  However, those things are not what we have been asked to do.  If we want to go to the temple in our day then we must be obedient and do what has been asked of us and we will then enjoy the blessings of the temple.

There is no need for pride in this thing - be humble and do these simple things the Lord has asked of us.

It's not about the coffee, it is about the commandment. Disobedience to any of God's laws and commandments can bring upon all destruction, if we remain unrepentant.

Will training one hour less each day keep me out of the Olympics? Will eating one chocolate bar a day keep me from losing weight? If you want to be successful, you do what you need to be successful rather than finding ways to cheat.

If God tells us not to chew gum, we probably should not chew gum.  If God tells us to eat potatoes, we probably should eat potatoes,.  Obedience is what is important.  Life is not about discovering as many situations we can find to be disobedient.

The Lord promises eternal life to those who have faith, keep the commandments, and endure to the end. Do I really need to find references for those?

So, if you earnestly struggle with coffee or caffeine addiction, then I believe eternal life is still yours to win.  But if you, quietly or defiantly, choose to consider a little coffee here and there to be acceptable, then eternal life is closed to you.

What kind of coffee?! I remember not quite two years ago I was at a baptism and someone brought extra halloween chocolate bars for the missionaries. Some other guy started going through it all and started taking all the coffee crisp ones and said that his bishop won't give him a recommend because he eats it. I asked him who his Bishop was, Yahoo J. McBozo? and afterwards I emailed the makers of coffee crisp and asked them how much coffee is in it and they said it's coffee flavouring and only like .0000001 anyways.

What commandment are you referencing?  God gave the word of wisdom as "not by commandment".  That is what is says in our canonized scriptures.  Somewhere along the line men elevated it to a commandment.

When the Prophet elevated to a commandment it became a commandment.  It's all a matter of sustains and following the current prophets and apostles.

What did God create the Hemlock plant for?

Good to know, we have a friend who loves them but I worried about it causing sleep problems for him not knowing how much was in them (he has issues).  So now it looks like it is only the sugar and chocolate he has to worry about (chocolate can cause problems for some health problems, I can't touch the stuff myself...switched to caramel to replace it on the rare occasion I must have something sweet and totally worthless nutritionally speaking).

Which men? Were they wrong?

Well, does the occasional trip to the all you can eat buffet?

Or eating meat heavily for like a week straight?

Not getting enough sleep and staying up way late?

Not exercising?

Or any of the other things in the WoW?

Any sin is enough to keep us out of the temple, because no unclean thing can enter. But that is why we have the Atonement. We must also be repentant of course.

Jesus only gave 1 commandment... To love.  Thats the only commandment that matters.

You might want to read your bible again.
I think I can find a few more commandments Jesus gave.

this is absolutely ridiculous .  Is this a serious question?  jesus came to abolish and fullfil the laws of the prophets, thus you only need to believe that jesus christ died for your sins.  Saved by grace through faith... period.  Being a Christian is not work based.  Living as Jesus did does allow you to live a much fuller life but your salvation is not in any way jeopardized.  Mormons i pray you all see the light and the truth.  Pray for the holy spirit to convict you and become born again with the blood of jesus and not fake prophets like J.S.

You might want to read the board rules before posting.
If not, you'll probably only last a couple of days before the Mods ban you.

Yet we take that word out of its Greco-Roman and Hebrew context and apply it to a Euroamerican sense of romanticism and Enlightenment era tolerance.

In the original sense to love something was to show forth pious living and adherence to moral standards.

you quote JS like that part matters.  Matt 22.   love the lord and love your neighbbor.  What the  " prophet " JS said is irrelevant

Who quoted Joseph?
You said Jesus only gave one commandment.
The Bible disagrees.  It has many commandments from Christ, and even more from his Father.

GOD gave the Jews laws.  jesus fulfilled the laws, thus abolishing them. Jesus gave the commandment to Love

You can keep saying that all you want.

Christ gave many more commandments.
