Thinking Posted May 14, 2016 Posted May 14, 2016 I am not making this up. Today my wife had a drive through interview with the Relief Society President. The sisters were invited to come to the church parking lot between 10 am and noon. Upon arrival, the RS president would sit in the passenger seat and conduct the interview. By the time my wife arrived it was too hot so the president had some lawn chairs set up under a tree. My wife was lucky enough to get to exit her car for the interview. Has anybody ever heard of this in other wards, and what do you think of it?

Huh,,no..never heard of this..in fact, thought all interviews were in an office at church or at the home, I am thinking she lost the keys to church and too embarrassed to ask for another set...that is crazy! On the lawn is nice,,your wife was lucky. But in a front seat of car is not spiritual if that is what they were looking for. Heck, I just as soon go on a nice walk and visit. 1

We did this "scholar program" deal when you had to read a bunch of stuff and memorize literally everything you ever read as a missionary and then pass it off and baptize 3 months in a row. So when you were out 9 months you could get the "Presidential" award with some privileges that go along with each distinction, I forget the names and what they were. But my Presidential interview was driving around the mission with this AP and he could literally care less about the interview. So he'd be like "tell me what Moses 1:39 is and you gave it to him and he'e be like "okay you know your scriptures pretty well and then he'd say what is the name of the prophet who had the Ark and you'd say Noah and maybe one or two other similar questions. But he'd tell me all this mission gossip and whatever, meanwhile his companion was grilling this sister missionary on the same stuff and she had to quote reams of stuff and all I got was the piddly stuff (not that I was complaining) but she got it and I didn't. One of the weirdest interviews I've ever had! what's worse is one i've had twice now and I know others have had too is if you have a comp. or some other member the MP or Bishop/Stake President will ask both of you in and confess something or share something or try to get something out of you about the other person who is sitting right next to you. It sounds kinda fun. RS visiting teaching interviews usually only take about 5-10 minutes a person so this sounds like an interesting take on the idea. 😊 3

It just sounds like a cute, quick, and efficient way to conduct interviews that often many don't want to do or don't feel like they have a lot of time for. I like it a little better with the lawn chair idea. A little more relaxed. With luv, BD 1

Rain Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 (edited) We did this several months back. It was announced for several weeks. You could make an appointment or just drive through. It seems like they had water bottles and some kind of treat as well. People with young children didn't need to find a babysitter or tangle them out of carseats. Storm Rider Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 I appreciate people who are willing to step out of the norm and do things a little differently in order to accomplish an objective they feel is important. Something like this where there is not a need for any degree of formality make it convenient for everyone and also makes it less threatening for those involved. Kudos to a a creative solution that results in successful accomplishment while making things easier. 1

My uncle got the police called out on him when he was on holiday in a Utah suburb a few years ago due to suspicious activity. When he asked the police what suspicious activity had been reported it was because he was walking round the neighbourhood. Imagine that... Walking! (I'm not making this up) 1

My son loves to walk in his off time and loves to walk late...he has been stopped several times and asked just what in the heck is he doing? Walking has become so suspicious! 1

(I'm not making this up) We lived in an apartment complex for about five years before we bought our house. There was a very large man (at least 6' 4" and over 300 lbs.) who liked to walk around the apartment complex at night for exercise. One day a neighbor told my wife that she felt safe at this complex because there was a security guard that patrolled the grounds at night. 1

(I'm not making this up) People walk around my Utah neighborhood all the time. Particularly if it's nice outside. I find this a bit of an odd critique. Most places that I've lived, particularly in suburban areas that tend to sprawl, do not have a lot of pedestrians walking about during the day....particularly if it's not a weekend and during the work/school hours. And I don't get how this applies to a drive through church meeting..particularly for women who have two or three little ones in tow where walking them may be a lot more work than it's worth to go visit a parking lot. Rain Posted May 15, 2016 Posted May 15, 2016 It really depends on where you live in the US. People in my neighborhood walk a LOT, though 95% of them walk at 5am when it is cooler. In other areas I haven't seen it as much. I've been walking to and from church for awhile. I won't be doing it this week (1:30-4:30pm) with it being hot. I look forward to October or November when the temps come down.

That said, don't criticize a car wash fundraiser for being a...fundraiser. As one who has been in charge of an extracurricular school group, I have organized both fundraisers and service projects. As far as fundraisers go, I preferred the kind that required the students to work and not just ask for money. We actually did have a car wash and just accepted donations. I collected the money, so the students didn't know how much people had paid. They worked hard on every car and told everybody thanks as they were leaving. One teenager found some change under the seat of his tires are worth more than the car clunker and gave it to me. I felt like he had donated $50. 1

I'm the RS secretary in my ward and to my knowledge, neither the current or the previous RS presidents* did interviews for anything. *Disclaimer: I live in the sticks and our ward is operating on a shoestring staff whilst carrying a heavy load of people who refuse to take callings, so sometimes things that are "normal" in other wards get cut
Rain Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 I would assume Thinking is talking about visiting teaching interviews. That was what I was talking about with the drive through interviews anyway. The president asks how things are going with your companion, those you teach and your own visiting teachers sometimes. Some may ask other things as well. My wards have had them every 5-6 years.
