Stargazer Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 The Church will reverse it's longstanding policy of operating without debt and with the assistance of Bain Capital purchase the Catholic Church in a leveraged buyout. That's quite funny, although perhaps Misere Nobilis, blue adept, and DOP will not appreciate it.
MormonMason Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 $10,000 cash for any missionary who completes his/her mission, served faithfully, and violated no mission rules along the way?
Duncan Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 $10,000 cash for any missionary who completes his/her mission, served faithfully, and violated no mission rules along the way?if that offer is retroactive then mail my cheque to my personal yacht in the Bahamas, my frog butler will help you with the spelling of my last name
sethpayne Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 How did I "snooker" anyone? I reported exactly what I had heard in the "Mormon grapevine." The only thing that happened is no one understood why I had done it.Well, the addition of you personally calling a friend was a nice touch. Very clever.
William Schryver Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 Well, the addition of you personally calling a friend was a nice touch. Very clever.I hear variations on that theme all the time when it comes to these rumors."Well, I know a guy who is married to the cousin of Elder So and So's wife. I'll call him and see if he knows anything about this ..."At any rate, it's my bedtime. I need my beauty rest. I hear they're going to bring back plural marriage tomorrow.
Sethbag Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Hmmm....I can think of two possibilities:1. Emeritus status for the Q12 and FP.2. Something in regard to women and priesthoodSethWhile I've been thinking along the lines of #1, I don't see how that would be so flippin' awesome that Schryver's 19-year old acquaintance would get all fired up about going on a mission by it. Same with #2.My bet is that Jesus appears in the Tabernacle and says "Hey everyone, I just thought you'd all like to know that I'm real, and that the Mormons really were the correct answer!"Actually you've succeeded in piquing my curiosity somewhat. Probably not enough to make me watch or listen to conference. But at least enough to log in here or over at our beloved luxury, custom, gated trailer park to see what was so awesome about it. 1
Zeta-Flux Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Well, I know of one announcement they will make: the change to the young men and young women's programs (no more lesson manuals). I bet that's what Will is talking about...
why me Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 If nothing big happens, I think that Will may be explaining himself for quite sometime. Also, if nothing big happens, we may all just consider saturday's conference a dud. Lets hope for something big.

Bernard Gui Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've resisted saying anything up until now, lest I be labeled as a wanton "rumor-monger." But I've finally decided to say something in order to alert people to the importance of participating in the upcoming General Conference of the Church. I realize that many people skip the Saturday Sessions for one reason or another. You don't want to do that tomorrow. I do not know the reasons why. I simply have very good reason to believe that something "big" is coming down tomorrow, and that it will be sufficiently "big" to warrant staying home from your planned trip to the lake, or to go 4-wheeling on the mountain, or whatever else you might have planned tomorrow. Or, if you just can't stay home, then be sure to tune in via radio or internet.I have heard several rumors and reports that have led me to conclude that something of extraordinary significance is to occur tomorrow, but I will only offer one second-hand anecdote as an illustration of the fact that something of great importance is coming down tomorrow:A friend and his son attended the recent dedication of the Brigham City Temple. The son is 19-years-old and is struggling with the decision to go on a mission or not. Hoping that something encouraging might be said to the son, the father introduced him to a general authority in attendance at the dedication (I will not name the GA). The son informed the GA that he was struggling with his decision to serve a mission. The GA simply told the son to be sure to watch or attend conference Saturday, and then assured him that afterwards his reluctance and indecision would disappear. So, take this for what it's worth. Even if I'm completely "up in the night" on this, you will surely profit from having participated in conference tomorrow.-WSThanks for the reminder, Will. I will watch all the conference sessions this weekend.
Sethbag Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 motivation to go ( or avoid ) a mission. Polygamy is to be reintroduced and returned missionaries get first pick. That's the first thing in this entire thread that might just possibly qualify as that things Schryver said would induce that wavering 19-year old to go on a mission. But we know the missionaries would never get the first pick. They already learned that mistake back in the 1800s, when the missionaries would pick out all the pretty ones for themselves and forward on just the ugly ones to Salt Lake City for the rest of the Brethren.
Sethbag Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I don't think you caught my intent. But don't feel bad. Apparently few others did, either. I thought it would be obvious. Obviously it wasn't.Anyway, this was supposed to be a thread that discussed why these kinds of "rumors" frequently make their way around Mormondom in advance of general conferences. I forgot that Mormons are also frequently a little slow on the uptake when it comes to sarcasm and parody.<sigh>So you were just yanking our chains? Bummer, I was getting ready to pull out my checkbook and be ready to catch up on all that back tithing, throw away my coffee maker, and go buy some white shirts. Oh well, nevermind.
sunstoned Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Previous to the second-hand story of the indecisive would-be missionary, I was told that Elder Nelson, in a meeting of stake presidents, stated that President Monson has received revelation on a matter of great importance for the entire Church, and that this revelation would be announced in General Conference. I have no reason to believe it has anything specifically to do with missionary work. But I have now heard three separate reports that something extraordinary will be announced tomorrow.going to a two hour meeting block?
Damien the Leper Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Meh...I'm not holding my breath for anything. If it is about women and priesthood, then it doesn't change or mean much. The church will go on and no one will be effected in any extraordinary ways. No one should get their hopes up for anything exciting.
DBMormon Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 (edited) William Shryver has already admitted his comments were a farce and some of you are still guessing what is going to happen..... now thats funnystill excited though.... there is a talk waiting just for me Edited October 6, 2012 by DBMormon

Duncan Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 if something does or doesn't happen, it isn't Will's fault, he somply told us what he had heard
William Schryver Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 (edited) William Shryver has already admitted his comments were a farce and some of you are still guessing what is going to happen..... now thats funnystill excited though.... there is a talk waiting just for meMy comments weren't a "farce." At least I didn't mean it that way. I actually think it's a very interesting phenomenon that the Saints are always looking forward to general conference as the place where "something big" will come down. Like I said above, we believe we have the oracles of God with us. Therefore we look to them for the mind and will of God being proclaimed to us. "Tis not in man they put their trust, nor on his arm rely."Come, listen to a prophet’s voice,And hear the word of God,And in the way of truth rejoice,And sing for joy aloud. We’ve found the way the prophets wentWho lived in days of yore.Another prophet now is sentThis knowledge to restore. The gloom of sullen darkness spreadThru earth’s extended spaceIs banished by our living Head,And God has shown his face.Thru erring schemes in days now pastThe world has gone astray;Yet Saints of God have found at lastThe straight and narrow way.’Tis not in man they put their trustNor on his arm rely.Full well assured, all are accursedWho Jesus Christ deny. The Savior to his people saith,“Let all my words obey,And signs shall follow living faith,Down to the latest day.”Then heed the words of truth and lightThat flow from fountains pure.Yea, keep His law with all thy mightTill thine election’s sure,Till thou shalt hear the holy voiceAssure eternal reign,While joy and cheer attend thy choice,As one who shall obtain. We're now cooking our traditional Conference morning breakfast, waiting for my sister and her family to arrive, and we will all sit down together to hear the prophets speak. It's my favorite time of the year ..."And signs shall follow living faith, down to the latest day." Edited October 6, 2012 by William Schryver 1
