But I've finally decided to say something in order to alert people to the importance of participating in the upcoming General Conference of the Church. I realize that many people skip the Saturday Sessions for one reason or another. You don't want to do that tomorrow. I do not know the reasons why. I simply have very good reason to believe that something "big" is coming down tomorrow, and that it will be sufficiently "big" to warrant staying home from your planned trip to the lake, or to go 4-wheeling on the mountain, or whatever else you might have planned tomorrow. Or, if you just can't stay home, then be sure to tune in via radio or internet.I have heard several rumors and reports that have led me to conclude that something of extraordinary significance is to occur tomorrow, but I will only offer one second-hand anecdote as an illustration of the fact that something of great importance is coming down tomorrow:A friend and his son attended the recent dedication of the Brigham City Temple. The son is 19-years-old and is struggling with the decision to go on a mission or not. Hoping that something encouraging might be said to the son, the father introduced him to a general authority in attendance at the dedication (I will not name the GA). The son informed the GA that he was struggling with his decision to serve a mission. The GA simply told the son to be sure to watch or attend conference Saturday, and then assured him that afterwards his reluctance and indecision would disappear.So, take this for what it's worth. Even if I'm completely "up in the night" on this, you will surely profit from having participated in conference tomorrow.-WSPresident Monson just announced that the minimum age for missionary service has been lowered to 18 for men and 19 for women.

I doubt the participation rates will go up. I think for the most part those who want to go will go at 19 or 18

Is it just the military issue brought up on the other thread?

I think serving at 18 will preempt that.

"By 16, they have largely focused their interests and at 17 will be choosing, if they are interested in university, their major field of study. Sometimes a 'gap year' is taken after school; most often, students glide straight into three years of a degree and then into work."If a British Mormon male wants to serve a mission, he will have "to withdraw from the university applications process," Head writes. "If he is at an academic school, he will likely be one of only a few who are similarly sidelined. ... His extreme Otherness will be confirmed."These countries now join most South American countries is sending Mormon missionaries out a year earlier than their counterparts in North America, who generally must wait until 19. For a couple years the missionary force will balloon and more areas will have to open up to missionaries (i.e. divided) which will have to be consolidated a few years later when things return closer to baseline.
