Deborah Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 But if you will glance at some of my posts on the "New Scripture Editions for 2013?" thread, you'll see why I can't accept that the appropriate use of electronic devices at church is rude or inconducive to the Spirit or that it is what Elder Christofferson had in mind when he made this comment.LOL! As I said I'm old and I like holding books. If the members are truly using their devices for this purpose then I suppose this is the way of the future. I suspect a lot of them aren't however.
Scott Lloyd Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 LOL! As I said I'm old and I like holding books. If the members are truly using their devices for this purpose then I suppose this is the way of the future. I suspect a lot of them aren't however. You're probably right.Let's not rip up the wheat with the tares, though (so to speak).
volgadon Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 You're probably right.Let's not rip up the wheat with the tares, though (so to speak).Perhaps there is an app for that...
Scott Lloyd Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Not at all, Scott. In fact, over the years, I feel like you and I have been more "in sync"; more in accord with one another than very few others. I have an extremely high regard for you and for your irrepressible boldness in standing for the truth and the kingdom.Well, we've both been pilloried at the Trailer Park . That's arguably a badge of honor. 3
jwhitlock Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Jwhitlock, as I stated, if refuting claims of another is a personal attack, then some much for defending anything. If refuting ones.claims is a personal attack, then much of what is self described as "apologetics" is a personal attack. Is it a personal attack to suggest that you sort of predictably show up in a thread wherein William's actions/intent are in question? No, I explained why yours was a personal attack. Evidently you refuse to grasp that particular concept.I, for one, admire a cogent refutation when I see one. Phrases such as "You drop names without names." don't rise to that level.
Stargazer Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I have not personally attacked you, you have personally attacked me, twice now. Stargazer has personally attacked me.If refutying claims is a personally attack then so much for defending anything.I'm sorry, I was not personally attacking you. If you thought that was a personal attack, you are far too sensitive. In fact, that is entirely my point, i.e. your sensitivity, which seems nearly hair-trigger. Perhaps you need to dial it back? Just saying. 2
jwhitlock Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 LOL! As I said I'm old and I like holding books. If the members are truly using their devices for this purpose then I suppose this is the way of the future. I suspect a lot of them aren't however. If you think electronic devices can be a distraction now in church (and they can), wait until Google glasses start to become available. 1
William Schryver Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 ... you sort of predictably show up in a thread wherein William's actions/intent are in question? And for this, I sincerely thank you, jwhitlock. We have never met in person (that I know of), and yet we are true and loyal friends to one another, for which I am very grateful. You are a good man.
Stargazer Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I like your thoughts on this... It is curious that so many peoples response was so excited, mine included. Just speaks to the fundamental lack of change we have at the institutional level of the church.Such a big change... hopefully no ones testimony was shaken. In fact, I am somewhat annoyed with William Schryver for writing this rumor out in flaming letters. If he had said nothing, I would have been enthused over the news. As it is, I was expecting something rather more momentous than an adjustment in the age qualification for full-time missionaries. Now, as to it being revelation or "mere" inspiration -- that's ridiculous. I've received some pretty important inspirations from time to time, and nobody should discount "mere" inspiration.I am reminded of C S Lewis's book title, "Mere Christianity". Pretty momentous, if you think about it."Mere Inspiration" sounds like a good book title. Perhaps President Uchtdorf ought to write such a book. I think it would be worth reading.
bluebell Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 My only struggle with this is the following..... On one hand we want to trumpet every change in the church as revelation.....This one doesn't even seem to be described that way by the Church. In this thread and in others it was claimed a great revelation was comingPresident Monson said this age 18 had been tried in other places with favorable results and implied that it seemed appropriate to allow this everywhere for that reason. It does not seem they want to imply that this was a revelation more so then a logical conclusion based on success and need.So why the rumors of revelation???? why do we see every change as revelation... What did you eat for breakfast? why? was it revelation or was it a decision based on need and where you saw a positive valueWhen did you do your HT/VT last month. Why did you pick the day that you did? Was it revelation? Not every advancement should be trumped as revelation. When we do that we minimize what a revelation is and demean it's meaning. Divine Revelation = It is the making known of divine truth by communication with the heavensThis is simply a policy change. It seems a good one and I am grateful for it but I would not call it revelation based on how it was relayedI remember Pres. Monson saying specifically that this decision was made after fervent prayer to the Lord. Does anyone else remember that, or did my mink make that part up? 2
Stargazer Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I have never seen (that I know of) an M. Night Shaymalan movie, but somehow I doubt they would be very popular among the participants of this message board. At any rate, I won't be attempting any more subtle parody on this board in the future. This is a place where one needs to paint with broad strokes. Very broad. What, you haven't seen Sixth Sense? Oh, my. One of Bruce Willis' best films -- at least in that one he isn't blowing away everything and everyone in sight. It actually required some acting. The movie might not have been in accordance with gospel principles (it's a life-after-death movie, William), but it was thought provoking nonetheless.
Stargazer Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Or lack of revelations from heaven. We are indeed hungry for that.I'd like to gently shake you by the shoulder, Tacenda, and emplasize that there is no lack of revelations from heaven. Why, I have even had a few myself. And please don't demand that they come forth in loud stentorious tones from the pulpit of General Conference -- I suggest you start listening a little harder for that "still, small voice." 1

I was pleasantly surprised to see that, in fact, there was some basis to the rumor. It was obviously blown out of proportion, as these things often are. This is why I was attempting (rather ineffectively, as it turned out) to underscore the fact that general conference is always "something big." At least to me. We needn't always stand in anticipation of some "extraordinary" revelation or announcement. Every general conference is, to me, the epitome of "extraordinary revelation"; the epitome of the great blessings we enjoy to have the oracles of God with us. In retrospect, I regret that my meaning and intent was so poorly apprehended. Nevertheless, those who have piled on me for allegedly having done something terrible are, in my opinion, finding fault without cause. <sigh> Edited October 7, 2012 by William Schryver

We have never met in person (that I know of), and yet we are true and loyal friends to one another, for which I am very grateful. You are a good man.Actually, we have met, Will. It was back at a FAIR conference several years ago - the only one I've been able to attend at this point. I want to say 2007 or 2008; Dan Petersen spoke. Oh wait, Dan speaks at most of them...It was the one where there was the dust-up about not moving tables around to put computers on, and someone got their nose bent out of shape about it and wrote something about it publicly hammering FAIR. I was sitting near Selek, and he was accused by the writer of being a hulking thug hovering around the area - which was absolutely hilarious.I need to get out there again for another conference. Maybe next year...

See how silly your premise is.Stargazer, yours are a personal attack.

Just look at this marvelous conversation that you sparked!I suppose that your OP was not really aimed at me -- Sis. Stargazer and I look forward to GC every six months and sit companionably together in bed watching it on our laptop, in stereo. I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I didn't know its author/director, or didn't remember it. Yes, it was a real mind-twister, that one. I remember getting it figured out just before the young boy character made it clear.Obviously, my lame attempt in this thread didn't measure up to that well-executed script.
William Schryver Posted October 7, 2012 Author Posted October 7, 2012 Actually, we have met, Will. I apologize for not using a more effective means to get my point across. But I think it's time we moved on.
Stargazer Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 So now you are attacking me, because by your standard you have used you in an accusatory way. See how silly your premise is.Stargazer, yours are a personal attack. If you insist upon it, then perhaps that is how you perceive it. All I'm telling you is that you appear to me to have set out to blame Will for some egregious offense, where it appeared to me that none existed. This is before I even said one peep. If you cannot see that perhaps it is you who have been raising a tempest in a teapot, then there isn't anything else to say other than "You may have it your way, if you wish."
Skylla Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 The moderators want to enjoy conference weekend with their families. If you can't manage to get along while talking about General Conference, go take a break.Skylla
