Something "Big" Coming Down Tomorrow?

One of my visiting teachers told me today that the Church will announce that all missions will now be paid in full by the Church. I was very skeptical.

Maybe there is something to the rumor? Who knows, but I am still looking forward to Conference.

Oh man! I'm preparing for a mission, and that would be really nice! Not gonna count on it though.

The Church will reverse it's longstanding policy of operating without debt and with the assistance of Bain Capital purchase the Catholic Church in a leveraged buyout.

That's what I used to do with my mortal parents. Since She is not a member of the Godhead, She doesn't have to be "one in purpose" with the Father.

I can't think of any adjectives to describe the notion that the Father would not be in complete agreement with Her on matters as crucial as how to raise their children.

Will, is this your source for the Elder Nelson bit? It seems the be the source for everyone else saying such things on the internet: http://denversnuffer.blogspot.com/2012/09/upcoming-general-conference.html

I heard it from my wife who said it was being passed around where she works. I don't know if that's where it originated. I told her this happens rather often, from what I've seen. It's almost a cultural imperative, in a way. And, as I said above, I think it's largely a good thing.

I just discovered this particular "something big" rumor has been going for a couple weeks now. I'm late to the game. I guess I need to keep my ear to the ground better.

I always wonder how these things start. It's always an exercise in Chinese Whispers. And I'm always several dozen pairs of ears down the line.

I can't imagine it will be anything too earth shattering... after all, they wouldn't want to derail Mitt's campaign would they? It'll be something warm and cuddly, if anything at all.

The fact that this rumour's based on a 'listen to conference, you'll want to go on a mission' and an anonymous blog post means I'll not hold my breath.

I suppose if one is going to publicly perpetuate a rumor in a grand manner that it is best to be on the ground floor rather than the last to know.

A big change to missionary work that might be earth shaking would be to make all missions primarily humanitarian. I could see pres. Monson supporting such a thing: as st. Francis said "preach the gospel and when necessary use words." Missionaries could still teach, but day times would be spent onhumanitarian endeavors.

That shift has been going on for some time.

In that case, can you identify it? Does it have to do with the changes in curriculum? There'll be a Church News story about that tomorrow.

I don't think you caught my intent. But don't feel bad. Apparently few others did, either. I thought it would be obvious. Obviously it wasn't.

Anyway, this was supposed to be a thread that discussed why these kinds of "rumors" frequently make their way around Mormondom in advance of general conferences. I forgot that Mormons are also frequently a little slow on the uptake when it comes to sarcasm and parody.

<sigh>

As I said above, this thread really wasn't meant to discuss the "what" of the rumor, but the "why". I really thought that at least a few people would realize I was being intentionally "over the top" in passing on my version of the rumor, and that it would initiate a discussion about the reasons behind the propensity we have for these kinds of things, especially along the Wasatch Front. It's pretty clear that I have failed miserably. So I guess I'll go back to watching the Cougar/Aggie game ...

I thought being slow on the uptake of sarcasm/parody was a North American thing, not just a Mormon thing... ;o)

Wow, that would be nice! Even better would be free tuition. :D

Oh, my!

Are you really so clueless?

I am very well informed. You open this thread claiming not wanting to rumor monger, yet that is exactly what you have done.

I apologize for suggesting you were "clueless." It's obvious that I was the one who didn't make my intent clear enough. Oh, well ... at least I'm not doing as badly as the BYU offense. That's some consolation, I suppose. ;)

so, there isn't something big coming down the pipe now? or rumoured to be coming anyways?

I never said that! Of course there is "something big" rumored to be happening tomorrow. And I'm going to be paying close attention to everything that is said. You should, too.

Nope. Looks like William snookered us in order to provoke meaningful discussion on the merits and implications of anticipating prophetic utterance.

How did I "snooker" anyone? I reported exactly what I had heard in the "Mormon grapevine." The only thing that happened is no one understood why I had done it.
