Last Movie You Watched

I am watching 'Miracle' this afternoon as I am doing (avoiding) my housework.

 

Yes, I am old enough to remember watching these Olympics the year they occurred.   Especially the hockey games.  I grew up in the Midwest. The school property directly across the street from our house was flooded every winter to make a skating rink.  I am no athlete, but my winters were spent lacing up my skates and heading across the street every chance I got.  I had figure skates not hockey skates, but between my love of skating and the popularity of hockey in the Midwest - well, I was screaming and jumping up and down along with the rest of my family during those Olympic hockey games.  This movie brings back a lot of memories (including the hairstyles on the men!).

 

By the way, I was shocked when I moved to Oregon in 1987 and found out that the skating rinks were indoors - in malls! - and  you had to pay money to skate.  No need for mittens or to go inside and warm up with hot chocolate from time to time.  So weird.

Also saw Ant Man this weekend and I thought it was lots of fun. I like Paul Rudd as well who played Ant Man.

I, too, watched those games, and the game between the US and Russia... I remember how the main character of the movie was in real life looking up into the crowd and we could read his lips as he was saying... Where's my dad?  Where's my dad? 

And I, too, loved ice skating and we had a large rink in a regular building... we used to go almost every Friday night or Saturday as a regular date with a group of friends... several of the boys had speed skates and during intermission they would skate in competiton... one just missed making the US Olympic speed skating team... 

I love it when movies can invoke memories of certain times in our lives...

I went to the latest "Mission Impossible", though to me, not as good as the last one, still impressive. It was finally nice to see a movie your teenagers can see. No language or sex scenes. And not as gory of violence as I've seen in other movies.

I rented "Woman in Gold" starring Helen Mirren... such a story about this Jewish woman who challenges and sues Austria for ownership of a now famous painting of her aunt that was hanging in Austria's largest museum, but used to hang in their home before being stolen by the Nazis during WWII and most of her family sent to interrment camps (her grandfather had taken her immediate family and escaped Warsaw just before the Nazis because he could see what was going to happen).   

Mirren is a wonderful actress... and the story of course is heart wrenching...

My wife and I just saw this.  It is a very sad story, but a very good movie.

I rented "Far From the Madding Crowd" starring Carey Mulligan... a remake of the one from the 1980's starring I believe Julie Christie...

It was good... not great...

What always amazes me about  remakes, usually I think ... why are they doing a remake so soon?  And then I realize it's been like 20+ years since the original.  Usually if the original had really good stars and good story, the  remake is weak... example: the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" starring Keanu Reeves can't compare to the original starring Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal.  Another was "Psycho" Starring Anne Heche in the role made famous by Janet Leigh in the original with Anthony Perkins... no way could Anne ever compare to Janet in the shower scene... that was etched in the minds of audiences for years.  And numerous other remakes the same way.

 

Two more:  "Yours, Mine and Ours"  The remake starring Dennis Quaid and ? could never compare to the original story starring Henry Fonda and Lucille Ball....

Second: I notice "The Parent Trap" is on today... the remake starring Lindsay Lohan and again, Dennis Quaid... can't compare to the original story starring Hayley Mills, Brian Keith and Maureen O'Hare... some films should just be left alone to stand as the classics they are...

Only once in a while is a remake the better movie... one I can think of is "Elizabeth" and also "Elizabeth, the Golden Age" both starring Cate Blanchett vs the older versions starring Katharine Hepburn and later Kate Jackson, although Kate Jackson was pretty good.

Not to worry, Garden Girl; Of course, I don't know what they're like in Oregon, but early Autumn is my favorite time of year: Changing, brilliant colors, not too hot and not too cold, and of course, it doesn't hurt that basketball and football seasons also start ... What can I say?  I'm a guy!

I watched Hansel and Gretel :Witch Hunters on tv the other night. It was so dumb. So very very dumb. I couldn't believe I actually watched the whole thing.

Then this morning I saw in the news that they are making a sequel because the first one was such a hit.

These are the moments when I realized how far from being cool I really am I guess.

I watched Hansel and Gretel :Witch Hunters on tv the other night. It was so dumb. So very very dumb. I couldn't believe I actually watched the whole thing.

Then this morning I saw in the news that they are making a sequel because the first one was such a hit.

These are the moments when I realized how far from being cool I really am I guess.

 

I did too, BB... I came in about half way through and can't believe that I actually watched it to the  end... I kept thinking how all the fight scenes were so violent and yet they would be able to get up and continue fighting... no matter how hard they were hit, thrown, slammed, punched, pounded, poked, smashed...

It was originally rated R so I'm guessing the full movie is even more gory than the version we saw.

I also saw Identity Thief off of the TV last night and was again disappointed. Way more crass than actually funny.

And the main character got hit full on by a car (flipping through the air after bouncing off of the hood and windshield) and she just got up and walked away.

Just saw the "Fantastic Four" reboot movie. Pretty tame for a Marvel movie. My dad told me reviews said it was like a trailer for a real movie, and I admit, it felt like that to me. But, the place was air conditioned, and is one of those newly revamped theaters with the plush recliner seats, so really not a bad way to spend 2 hours in the summer when you don't have air conditioning.

I liked the characters for the most part, but wasn't impressed with the script. Washoping this one would do better.

Although it wasn't a movie, by way of entertainment, we took our kids to the local Pentatonix / Kelly Clarkson event tonight. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Fun to see how many kids were there. It was a perfect summer evening for an outdoor ampitheater, and it was an extremely memorable experience.

I liked H&G Witch Hunters but mainly because Jeremy Renner was in it.

 

I just watched a previously recorded movie "The Apple Dumpling Gang" with Don Knotts and Tim Conway, two of the funniest men ever. Laugh out loud clean fun. Those two together are priceless. I wish they'd done more movies.

You might like The Pitch Perfect movies. Yes there is some crude and sophomoric humor, and I did laugh...but so did my wife. And I think it says somewhere that it's OK, as long as she laughs too....somewhere.

I appreciate the input Okrahomer. And we certainly love good music. But we actually saw the first Pitch Perfect movie on DVD a few months back, and based on our personal tastes, not one of us liked it enough to want to see the sequel.

Alas, I feared my suggestion might fall "flat"; nevertheless, I don't want to strike a "discordant chord" in this otherwise "harmonious" discussion by failing to respond to your question: we didn't actually see the first one, so I'd have to say the 2nd one was my "favorite"--more likely a slightly guilty pleasure. But if some of the good people here are willing to admit to liking those sharks ascending into orbit a la Sharknado 3; then I can own up to having been entertained by Pitch Perfect 2.
