Last Movie You Watched

Rare is a Hollywood movie based on actual events that gets it mostly right. Every effort is made to get the surrounding fashion and set design as accurate as possible. The plot/script is where ' artistic license' comes to the fore.

' Titanic ' springs to mind. After the ship hits the iceberg and begins filling with water, the main characters spend 20 minutes flailing around in icy North Atlantic water. NOPE. Ain't gonna happen. A couple of minutes in that water

and the human body shuts down , unable to move let alone think.

' Agro ' is another that plays fast and loose with history, but I have a dog in that fight.

I saw the movie Into Thin Air and read the book.  Though I can't remember much.  I'll have to see Everest.  I wonder why Hollywood made two films? 

 

Into Thin Air the movie was a made for t.v. movie so it was never released to theaters.  Different levels of production value and caliber of actors.  I remember that movie though and thought it was good.

They actually did pull a couple of people out of the water who survived after Titanic sank and a boat came back, so Rose's survival is not out of the realm of possibility.  But yeah, since the main characters were fictional they obviously took some creative license there.

 

I know that Krakaurer has been critical of the film, but then he does not come out looking very good in it so i'm not surprised.  I know that some of the other people who were there on the mountain were critical of Krakauer's book so turn around seems to be fair play.  

 

Like you said, i agree that it's not possible to be completely accurate with this kind of thing.  Even with contemporary events, where people are still alive and things have been documented, there is always disagreement.  No one's memory is perfect, for one thing, and everyone is seeing things thru their own lens of fatigue, emotion, stress, etc. for another.

The book itself is criticized as not being accurate by others who were there, iirc (it has been years since I looked into that because of researching his banner of heaven or whatever it was called book about the Church), just an fyi...doesn't mean it isn't a good movie.  

 

I remember that.  It's one of the reasons that i think it's funny that Krakauer is critical of the movie.

Maybe the writers incorporated some of the criticisms into the movie as the main criticism iir was that Kraukuer sp? made himself look better than he actually was while ignoring others' contributions.

I liked the new Cinderella. It recaptured a lot of the magic of the original animated movie. Much better than other recent live adaptations of Disney animated classics.

Just finished Phantom Menace. Five more Star Wars movies to go.

 

 

It was definitely true to the Disney animated version, which was fun.

Wait.  There's a Disney version of Phantom Menace?

Watched The Matrix on TV. One of my favorite movies ever. Too bad the sequels weren't as good.

So i noticed that "Into Thin Air" the made for tv movie was on the other day and decided to watch it so i could compare the two movies.  I had to laugh because in ITA, Krakauer is portrayed as one of the heroes.  He definitely is not portrayed that way in Everest.

Recently finished watching Star Wars Episode 2.  The awful love story in this one easily makes it the worst movie in the saga IMO.  There was one scene in particular that was so cringeworthy that I had to skip through it.

I was perplexed that a movie taking place in Hawaii would feature no actual Hawaiians.  You know, only Haoles.

Amen! We saw The Martian yesterday. I was thoroughly entertained. Matt Damon's portrayal of someone who uses his brain to survive is terrific. And Jessica Chastain offers up a similarly realistic portrayal of a leader having to make difficult choices under unimaginable pressure.

Today about noon I decided to go to the movies because "The Martian" was playing at the Bijou... an old theatre that has been in the center of town since the 1950's ...  they've redone the screen (was an original "silver" screen), and the seats.  And I wanted to see this movie on the large screen vs waiting for it to come out on DVD.  Some movies you just have to see on the big screen, and this certainly is one, to get the full impact of the special effects. 

I found it very entertaining, and Matt Damon did an excellent job, along with other cast members.

(We also have a modern multi-screen threatre which I prefer, but usually when the Bijou carries a film, it's not shown at the multi- ).

I hadn't thought of that, but I think that's a fair assessment.  BTW:  I liked both of those movies too; although, IMHO Apollo 13 was the better one of the two.

It's weird, you know?  I am such into the space program and sciency stuff, but have never seen Apollo13 and don't even want to.  But I saw Castaway and loved it. 

 

The funny thing about Castaway is that I wish I knew what happened when he went back to that farm that had the wings on it, and met the lady that lived there.  Romance? 

 

The other funny thing (that I forget where I heard it) is that supposedly that particular package he never opened contained a solar-powered satellite phone.  If so, then it is probably a good thing we didn't find out while they were sitting at coffee in the lady's kitchen.  That would have been, like Wow.  Irony all over the place.

First, I really liked Castaway also... Hanks did a wonderful job of carrying the film...

 

Second, did he go back to the farm or are you talking about when he left the package on the front porch and went on his way because she wasn't home... he briefly met her out on the highway, and it was ambiguous as to whether he went after her when he saw the wings painted on her truck as she drove away... left it to the imagination.  My hope was that he would go after her...

 

Third, the package was for the woman... an artist... so I assumed it was something to do with art, or some piece of equipment for her metal sculpting, etc.  It would be too ironic if it was a satellite phone... the package is also left to the imagination...

I always thought that the package was from the woman, not for her.  I assumed that she's the one who decorated the package before she mailed it. Hmmm....

Maybe so... did I miss that the package had the wings on it?  Now that I think of it, maybe they were on the package and he saw the wings on the archway over the driveway and recognized them from the package... then again on the back of her truck.  But even so, why would she be sending anyone a satellite phone... a Christmas present? 

I think not knowing the contents of the package was just fine no matter what...

 

Edit to Add... I thought it interesting that when she drove up, he was standing at a crossroads... actually the crossroads of his life... which direction to go... then she comes along and they talk and she gives him directions, and then drives away on the road leading to her house, and as she does so he sees the wings on the back of her truck... and he watches her head down the road... I wanted him to follow her.... but it leaves that up in the air so we don't know if he did.
